Technology has fundamentally changed what a classroom looks like – and more importantly, what it feels like. Students no longer have to sit passively through lectures. With the right ICT tools, they can touch, respond, collaborate, and connect in real time, whether they’re seated in a physical classroom or logging in from hundreds of miles away. Research consistently shows that when digital tools are thoughtfully integrated, they shift teaching from a teacher-centred model to a learner-centred one – driving critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration. This post walks through four key categories of ICT tools that are making education more interactive and effective.

Interactive whiteboards and smart classrooms

The traditional chalkboard served education for generations. But the interactive whiteboard (IWB) – and the smart classroom built around it – has taken its place in schools around the world, and the difference is significant. An IWB is a large touch-sensitive display connected to a computer and projector, allowing teachers and students to interact directly with digital content using a finger, stylus, or pen.

Studies on IWB use confirm that these boards offer multiple benefits: they enhance student engagement and learning efficiency, provide scaffolding for diverse learning styles, and save instructional time. Critically, they support multisensory learning – students who engage with content through touch, visual cues, and audio tend to form stronger cognitive connections and retain information better. Research on student perspectives found that interactive tools embedded in smart boards, including quizzes and drag-and-drop activities, also gave teachers and students immediate feedback, helping identify areas that needed further attention.

What makes a smart classroom different from a regular digital classroom?

A smart classroom goes beyond simply placing a screen at the front of the room. It integrates the IWB with cameras, computers, internet access, and student response systems to create a seamless, connected learning environment. Teachers can display videos, annotate live documents, pull up websites mid-lesson, and invite students to physically come up and solve problems on the board. A survey across 200 schools worldwide found that 70% of students reported a significant increase in their classroom interaction time after smart whiteboards were introduced. One US high school that adopted this technology recorded a 35% rise in student classroom participation, with teachers gaining better insight into each student’s progress.

The key, however, is how the tool is used. Research published in Education and Information Technologies notes that IWBs have high potential to motivate and engage students – but this potential is most fully realised when teachers use the interactive features of the board rather than treating it purely as a presentation screen. When students touch, move, and annotate, learning becomes active rather than passive.

Video and audio conferencing

One of the most practical challenges in education has always been geography. A student in a rural area, a learner who is unwell, or a class that wants to hear from a subject expert in another country – all of these situations used to mean missed opportunities. Video and audio conferencing tools have changed that equation entirely.

Platforms like Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams now serve as virtual classrooms, enabling live instruction, discussion, and collaboration regardless of physical location. A study on Zoom as an e-learning tool found that students reported the platform increased their collaboration and interactivity while also fostering greater learning autonomy. Features like screen sharing, breakout rooms, polls, and live Q&A keep sessions dynamic and participatory – far removed from one-way broadcasting.

Zoom vs. Google Meet: which one works best for education?

Both platforms are widely used in education, and each has distinct strengths. Google Meet is cloud-based, requires no installed app, and integrates directly with Google Classroom and Google Calendar – making it an excellent choice for institutions already using Google Workspace. Zoom, on the other hand, offers a broader feature set including more robust breakout room controls, extensive LMS integrations, and detailed attendance analytics. A comparison study noted that Google Meet uses less data – a meaningful advantage for students with limited connectivity – while Zoom delivers higher video quality and better scalability for larger classes.

Beyond the classroom itself, video conferencing opens doors for guest lectures, international collaborations, and peer learning across institutions. A history teacher can bring a historian directly into a lesson via Zoom. An English class can hold live group discussions using Google Meet breakout rooms. These tools don’t just replicate the classroom online – they expand what’s possible in it.

E-learning technologies and learning management systems (LMS)

If video conferencing is the live classroom, a Learning Management System (LMS) is the entire school building in digital form. An LMS is a platform that centralises course content, assignments, assessments, communication, and progress tracking in one organised digital space.

The most widely used platforms in education include Moodle, Google Classroom, and Blackboard. Google Classroom, for instance, allows teachers to include YouTube videos, interactive games, presentations, and slideshows to enhance learning outcomes. Blackboard enables educators to administer assessments, track student progress, manage the curriculum, and upload grades – all accessible to students and parents in real time. Moodle, as an open-source platform, is highly customisable and widely adopted in higher education globally.

How LMS platforms foster real interactivity

The real power of an LMS is not just content storage – it is the interactive layer built around that content. Research on digital learning platforms highlights that well-structured LMS environments foster engagement through clearly defined tasks and learning pathways. Discussion forums allow students to ask questions, respond to peers, and debate ideas outside of class hours. Quizzes provide instant feedback. Assignment portals create accountability. And for teachers, dashboards offer a bird’s-eye view of who is keeping up and who needs support.

A systematic review on ICT integration in secondary education found that when students perceive ICT tools as genuinely useful and easy to use, they are more likely to adopt them and integrate them into their learning habits. This makes the design and usability of an LMS as important as its features. An LMS that is intuitive and well-organised encourages consistent student participation; a poorly designed one creates friction and disengagement.

LMS platforms also support personalised learning – students can revisit recorded lectures, complete tasks at their own pace, and access supplementary materials suited to their level. This is particularly valuable for diverse classrooms where students have different learning speeds and styles. Digital learning platforms also improve transparency between teachers, students, and parents, with real-time access to grades, assignment status, and progress reports – reducing the need to wait for parent-teacher meetings to identify issues early.

Social media and mobile apps for learning

Students already spend significant time on their smartphones. Rather than treating this as a problem, educators are increasingly finding ways to channel that behaviour productively. Social media platforms and mobile apps – when used with clear purpose – can turn everyday digital habits into genuine learning opportunities.

WhatsApp as a learning tool

WhatsApp has become one of the most widely adopted educational communication tools, particularly in resource-constrained settings where more expensive platforms are inaccessible. With over 2 billion users worldwide, WhatsApp’s low data consumption and near-universal familiarity make it easy to deploy in almost any educational context. Teachers use group chats to share resources, post homework reminders, answer student questions in real time, and circulate video or audio explanations of complex concepts. Studies show that this kind of integration can improve student engagement by up to 30%, driven largely by the immediacy and familiarity of the platform.

Research published in Frontiers in Education found that WhatsApp functions as a platform that promotes educational interaction among students, positively supporting their academic journey – particularly during major transitions like moving from school to university. A separate study in Education and Information Technologies concluded that educators can leverage WhatsApp to enhance students’ academic engagement by expanding their networks of learning, enabling them to acquire and share knowledge beyond the physical classroom.

That said, WhatsApp use in education requires clear protocols. Using personal accounts raises data protection concerns, and boundaries between academic communication and informal use need to be established from the start.

Discussion forums and educational apps

Beyond WhatsApp, dedicated discussion forums embedded in LMS platforms – or hosted on tools like Padlet or Edmodo – create structured spaces for peer learning. Students can post questions, respond to prompts, and engage in academic debate at any time. This asynchronous interaction is particularly valuable for students who are reluctant to speak up in live class settings.

On the app side, platforms like Kahoot!, Quizlet, and Nearpod bring gamified, mobile-friendly interactivity into the learning experience. Kahoot! allows teachers to create quizzes and surveys that students answer from any device with a browser, making it easy to run formative assessments in class. Quizlet turns revision into a game. Nearpod allows teachers to build multimedia presentations embedded with polls, quizzes, and open-ended questions – turning a passive lecture into a two-way conversation.

A meta-analysis on ICT in early childhood and primary education confirmed that interactive whiteboards and educational apps help students comprehend complex concepts through gamified, interactive approaches – and that the integration of such tools is one of the most transformative developments in modern education. Crucially, the research literature emphasises that choosing user-friendly tools and providing adequate support are just as important as the technology itself. When students find tools easy to navigate, their willingness to engage with them – and their academic outcomes – improve significantly.

Making ICT work: it’s about integration, not just access

Having access to ICT tools is not the same as using them well. The most important factor in whether technology enhances interactivity is how deliberately it is integrated into the teaching and learning process. A smart board used only to display slides is little more than an expensive projector. An LMS filled with static PDFs offers minimal advantage over a printed handout. The tools described in this post – interactive whiteboards, video conferencing platforms, LMS solutions, and mobile apps – are genuinely powerful when they are designed into lessons with clear learning goals in mind.

UNESCO’s analysis of ICT in education puts it directly: interactivity, flexibility, and convenience have become the defining features of effective ICT-supported learning environments. ICT enables learners to access, extend, transform, and share ideas in multi-modal formats – and it encourages the kind of collaborative culture and active learning that research consistently links to better outcomes. The question is not whether to use these tools, but how to use them in ways that put the learner at the centre.
