Technology has moved from the margins of classrooms to the very centre of how teaching and learning happen today. Whether it’s a teacher in a rural school using a tablet to deliver interactive lessons or a university professor running live quizzes on Kahoot, digital tools are reshaping education at every level. But with so many options available – from hardware to software, from content creation platforms to assessment apps – it can be overwhelming to figure out what actually works. This post breaks down the key technologies that educators are integrating into their teaching-learning processes and how each one contributes to better outcomes.

Digital devices in education

The foundation of any technology-integrated classroom is the hardware. Without the right devices, even the best software tools remain inaccessible. Over the past decade, digital devices in schools have evolved from bulky desktop computers to lightweight, portable, and increasingly affordable options that serve diverse educational needs.

Computers and laptops

Desktop computers and laptops remain the workhorses of educational technology. They are essential for research, writing assignments, coding exercises, and running complex software. Many schools have adopted one-to-one (1:1) laptop programmes, where each student is assigned a personal device. This model has been shown to improve student engagement and provide more consistent access to learning resources. Chromebooks, in particular, have become popular in schools because of their low cost, easy management, and seamless integration with cloud-based platforms like Google Classroom.

Tablets

Tablets offer a more portable and touch-friendly alternative. They are particularly effective for younger learners who may find traditional keyboards challenging. Tablets support a wide range of educational apps and can be used for reading, drawing, watching instructional videos, and even augmented reality (AR) experiences. Their portability makes them useful for both classroom and fieldwork scenarios.

Projectors and interactive smartboards

Projectors have long been used to display presentations and videos to an entire class simultaneously. However, interactive smartboards take this a step further. A smartboard is essentially a large, touch-sensitive display that allows teachers and students to interact directly with the projected content – annotating diagrams, dragging elements in a lesson, or solving problems on-screen in real time. Smartboards work well with apps like Kahoot, Google Classroom, and Padlet, turning passive viewing into an active, hands-on experience. E-learning tools and learning management systems (LMS)

Hardware alone does not create a digital classroom. You need a platform to organise courses, distribute materials, collect assignments, and track student progress. This is where Learning Management Systems come in. An LMS is software that allows educators to create, manage, and deliver educational content in a structured online environment.

Google Classroom

Google Classroom is one of the most widely used LMS platforms globally, especially in K-12 education. It is part of Google Workspace for Education and integrates tightly with tools like Google Docs, Google Drive, Google Meet, and Google Slides. Teachers can create classes, post assignments, share resources, grade submissions, and communicate with students – all from a single dashboard. Its biggest strengths are its simplicity and the fact that it is free for schools. Since almost everyone has a Google account, the barrier to entry is extremely low. However, it does have limitations. Compared to more advanced platforms, it offers fewer customisation options and lacks built-in features like advanced analytics or gamification. For schools that already use Google Workspace, though, it is an excellent and efficient choice.

Moodle

Moodle is an open-source LMS that offers far more depth and flexibility than Google Classroom. It supports complex course structures, advanced quizzes, grading rubrics, forums, wikis, and a vast library of plugins for gamification, interactivity, and integration with third-party tools. Because it is open-source, institutions can download and host it on their own servers, giving them full control over data and customisation. A comparative study published in the International Journal of Research and Innovation in Social Science found that Moodle’s customisation and scalability make it particularly well-suited for institutions that need a long-term, feature-rich digital learning solution. The trade-off is a steeper learning curve – setting up and managing Moodle requires more technical expertise than a cloud-hosted platform like Google Classroom.

Edmodo

Edmodo occupies a middle ground between Google Classroom’s simplicity and Moodle’s complexity. It was designed specifically for K-12 education and has a social-media-like interface that students find familiar and easy to navigate. Teachers can create groups, post assignments, conduct polls, and share resources. Edmodo also integrates with tools like Microsoft Office and Google, making file-sharing straightforward. It has been particularly popular for connecting classrooms across different schools or even countries for collaborative projects. While its feature set is not as expansive as Moodle’s, it provides a more engaging interface for younger students who might be overwhelmed by a traditional LMS.

Content development and presentation tools

Creating engaging educational content is a skill in itself, and the right tools can make a huge difference. Teachers need to prepare lesson materials, presentations, handouts, infographics, and more – often on tight schedules. Fortunately, several powerful tools make content creation accessible even for those without design backgrounds.

Google Docs and Google Slides

Google Docs and Google Slides are foundational tools for content creation in education. Google Docs allows real-time collaborative writing, making it ideal for group projects, peer editing, and co-authored lesson plans. Teachers can leave comments and suggestions directly on student work, creating a seamless feedback loop. Google Slides, meanwhile, offers a straightforward way to create visual presentations. Because these tools are cloud-based, students and teachers can access and edit them from any device with an internet connection. The revision history feature also lets teachers see how a document has evolved, which can be valuable for assessing individual contributions in group work.

Canva

Canva has become a favourite among educators for creating visually appealing materials without needing graphic design skills. Its drag-and-drop interface, thousands of free templates, and extensive library of images, icons, and fonts make it easy to produce professional-looking infographics, posters, worksheets, presentations, and social media graphics. Canva for Education is free for teachers and students and includes collaboration features that let teams work on designs together. It is particularly useful for project-based learning, where students need to present their findings in creative visual formats rather than traditional essays or slideshows.

Microsoft PowerPoint

PowerPoint has been a staple in education for decades, and it continues to be widely used for creating structured presentations. Its strength lies in its robust feature set – animations, transitions, embedded media, speaker notes, and compatibility with a wide range of file formats. With Microsoft 365, PowerPoint now also supports real-time collaboration and cloud storage via OneDrive. For teachers who need more advanced multimedia capabilities than Google Slides offers – such as complex animations or embedded videos with precise playback controls – PowerPoint remains a strong choice.

Assessment tools for the modern classroom

Assessment is not just about end-of-term exams anymore. Formative assessment – the ongoing process of checking student understanding during a lesson – has become a cornerstone of effective teaching. Digital assessment tools make it easier to gather real-time data on student learning, provide instant feedback, and keep students actively involved.

Kahoot

Kahoot is a game-based learning platform that turns assessment into a fun, competitive activity. Teachers create quizzes with multiple-choice questions, and students respond on their own devices in real time. A leaderboard tracks scores, and points are awarded for both accuracy and speed. As Edutopia reports, many teachers use Kahoot as a staple for formative assessment, employing it several times a week for bell-ringers, test reviews, and quick knowledge checks. The platform supports both individual and team modes, making it adaptable to different classroom scenarios. Its gamified format motivates students who might otherwise disengage from traditional quizzes.

Quizlet

Quizlet started as a flashcard tool but has grown into a comprehensive study platform. Students can create or access millions of pre-made flashcard sets and use various study modes – including write, match, and test – to reinforce their understanding. Quizlet Live takes this further by turning flashcard sets into collaborative team games. In Quizlet Live, students are sorted into random teams and must work together to answer questions correctly. The catch is that answer options are distributed across all team members’ devices, so no one person can dominate – everyone must communicate and contribute. This design makes it one of the best tools for building both subject knowledge and teamwork skills simultaneously.

Padlet

Padlet is a versatile digital bulletin board where students and teachers can post text, images, links, videos, and documents. It serves as an excellent tool for brainstorming, collaborative reflection, and informal assessment. For instance, a teacher might create a Padlet wall asking students to share one key takeaway from a lesson. Students can also respond to and build on each other’s posts, creating a rich, visible record of class thinking. According to Public School Review, digital platforms like Padlet that support collaboration are reshaping how educators assess understanding, moving beyond traditional paper-based methods toward more interactive and inclusive approaches.

Collaboration and communication tools

Effective teaching and learning increasingly depend on communication that extends beyond the classroom walls. Whether it’s facilitating group projects, conducting virtual office hours, or enabling remote learning, collaboration tools have become indispensable.

Zoom and video conferencing

Zoom became a household name during the shift to remote learning, and it continues to play an important role in education. Teachers use it for live virtual classes, guest lectures, parent-teacher meetings, and peer collaboration sessions across geographies. Features like breakout rooms allow teachers to split students into small groups for discussion or activities, replicating the small-group work that happens in physical classrooms. Google Meet and Microsoft Teams

Google Meet integrates directly with Google Classroom, making it easy for teachers to schedule and launch virtual sessions from within their existing workflow. Microsoft Teams, on the other hand, offers a broader collaboration ecosystem – combining chat, video meetings, file storage, and app integrations in one place. Schools that are invested in the Microsoft ecosystem often prefer Teams for its comprehensive approach to classroom communication and collaboration. Both tools support large group meetings, recording, and real-time captions, making them accessible for diverse learner needs.

Making technology integration work

Having access to technology is one thing; using it effectively is another. The OECD Digital Education Outlook 2026 emphasises that technology supports learning best when it is guided by clear pedagogical purpose. Simply adding digital tools to a classroom without aligning them to learning objectives can lead to distraction rather than deeper understanding.

Effective technology integration follows a few key principles. First, start small – introduce one or two tools at a time and build comfort before adding complexity. Second, always tie the technology back to curriculum goals. If the objective is to improve collaborative skills, choose tools like Padlet or Google Docs that specifically facilitate group work. Third, invest in training. Teachers need ongoing professional development to use these tools confidently and creatively. Finally, ensure equitable access. Technology should bridge learning gaps, not widen them. Schools must ensure that every student has the devices and connectivity needed to participate fully.

It is also worth noting that technology works best when it complements rather than replaces traditional teaching. Strategies like blended learning – where digital and face-to-face instruction are combined – and flipped classrooms – where students review content at home and use class time for hands-on activities – allow teachers to leverage the strengths of both approaches.

Choosing the right tools for your classroom

With so many technologies available, the selection process can be daunting. Here are a few practical questions teachers can ask when evaluating a tool:

Does it align with my learning objectives? A tool is only useful if it helps students achieve the goals you have set for a particular lesson or unit.

Is it accessible to all students? Consider device requirements, internet connectivity, and whether the tool accommodates learners with disabilities.

How steep is the learning curve? Tools like Google Classroom are easy to start with, while platforms like Moodle require more setup time but offer greater depth.

Does it provide actionable data? The best assessment tools give teachers clear insights into student understanding, not just scores but patterns of learning.

Is it sustainable? Free tools are appealing, but consider long-term costs, data privacy policies, and whether the platform will continue to be supported and updated.

The goal is not to use as many tools as possible but to select the right combination that supports your specific teaching context and student needs. A well-chosen set of three or four tools – one for content delivery, one for collaboration, one for assessment – can be far more effective than a scattered approach using dozens of platforms.

The road ahead for educational technology

The global EdTech market continues to grow rapidly. According to Public School Review, the market was valued at roughly $233.8 billion in 2025, with sustained growth projected into the next decade. Emerging technologies like AI-powered tutoring systems, augmented reality, and adaptive learning platforms are set to become more mainstream in classrooms worldwide.

However, as the OECD’s research highlights, the success of these tools depends on how thoughtfully they are implemented. Technology is a means, not an end. The most effective classrooms will be those where teachers use digital tools intentionally, keep pedagogy at the centre, and ensure that every student benefits from the opportunities technology creates.
