What is self-assessment?
Self-assessment is the process in which students evaluate their own work, progress, and understanding against defined criteria. It’s not about students giving themselves a grade for fun – it’s a structured activity where learners reflect on what they know, what they don’t, and what steps they need to take next.
When a student finishes writing an essay and then reviews it against a rubric before submitting, that’s self-assessment. When a learner completes a math problem set and checks where they went wrong using a checklist, that’s also self-assessment. The key element is reflective judgment – students making evaluative decisions about their own learning.
According to research published in Frontiers in Education, when students evaluate their own work, they activate metacognitive strategies that help them monitor and regulate their learning. This means self-assessment is not just a grading activity – it’s a tool for developing self-regulated learners who can plan, track, and adjust their learning independently.
Why self-assessment matters
Self-assessment helps students develop ownership of their learning. Instead of waiting for a teacher to tell them what needs improvement, they identify gaps themselves. This builds independence, strengthens critical thinking, and prepares students for lifelong learning beyond the classroom. Best tools for self and peer assessment
Technology has made it significantly easier to implement both self-assessment and peer assessment at scale. Digital tools provide structure, enable anonymity, automate distribution, and create records that both students and teachers can review over time. Let’s look at the most effective tools available.
E-rubrics
An e-rubric (electronic rubric) is a digital scoring guide that defines the criteria and performance levels for an assignment. Unlike a paper rubric, an e-rubric is interactive – students can use it to evaluate their own work or a peer’s work directly within a digital platform.
E-rubrics are powerful for both self-assessment and peer assessment. When students have access to a clear rubric before starting an assignment, they can self-assess their draft against the stated criteria and make improvements before final submission. For peer assessment, the rubric ensures that every reviewer uses the same standards, making the process more objective and consistent.
Research on e-rubrics in higher education, as discussed in a study indexed on Academia.edu, shows that e-rubrics have become an important resource for assessing competencies and guiding learners, with students reporting that they found e-rubrics especially useful for understanding expectations in both self-evaluation and peer evaluation activities.

The review also noted that e-portfolios support co-regulation of learning through online peer assessment and collaborative rubric development.
E-portfolios also work well for peer assessment. Students can share their portfolios with classmates for review and feedback at different stages of a project. Platforms like Seesaw, Google Sites, Mahara, and WordPress are commonly used to build and host student e-portfolios. Many universities also use dedicated platforms like Digication and PebblePad for more structured portfolio assessment.
The University of Connecticut’s Educational Technologies office recommends using rubrics alongside e-portfolios, noting that e-portfolios can be evaluated for achievement of learning objectives, reflectiveness, and overall quality. The AAC&U VALUE rubrics are a widely used resource that many institutions adopt for e-portfolio assessment.
Online feedback and peer review tools
Several dedicated platforms are designed specifically to facilitate structured peer review in educational settings. These tools automate much of the logistics – distributing work, assigning reviewers, setting deadlines – while ensuring the feedback students give is meaningful and aligned with learning goals.
FeedbackFruits is one of the most widely adopted peer assessment tools in higher education. It integrates with popular LMS platforms like Moodle, Canvas, and Blackboard. Teachers can create structured peer review activities with customizable rubrics, enable anonymous feedback, and include self-assessment components. The platform also provides a dashboard where teachers can track every student’s progress through each stage of the review process. Other tools worth noting include Eduflow, which offers anonymous peer review with easy course creation features, and Peerceptiv, which provides instructor analytics to ensure peer grading is reliable and calibrated.
Making self and peer assessment work in the classroom
Technology alone won’t make these assessment methods successful. The way teachers design and implement these activities matters just as much as the tools they use. Here are some practical guidelines:
Provide clear criteria before the activity
Students cannot assess effectively – whether themselves or others – without understanding what they’re measuring against. Share rubrics, checklists, or scoring guides before students begin the assessment. Walk them through the criteria so they know exactly what “excellent,” “satisfactory,” and “needs improvement” look like in practice.
Start with low-stakes practice

Technical challenges can also arise. Not all students may have equal access to devices or stable internet, which can create barriers to participation in digital assessment activities. Educators need to account for this and provide alternatives where necessary.

Self and peer assessment, powered by technology, do more than just lighten the teacher’s grading load. They fundamentally change the student’s relationship with learning. When students regularly assess themselves and others, they develop a deeper understanding of what quality looks like, how to give and receive feedback constructively, and how to take responsibility for their own improvement.
These are not just academic skills. The ability to self-evaluate, provide constructive criticism, and incorporate feedback are competencies that employers value highly.
