When it comes to teaching, knowing your subject is only half the job. The other half – arguably the harder half – is figuring out how to teach it. Every classroom brings together students with different backgrounds, abilities, and ways of making sense of the world. An instructional strategy is the deliberate plan a teacher uses to bridge that gap between content and learner. Choosing the right one isn’t guesswork; it’s a systematic decision shaped by learning objectives, student needs, and the nature of the content itself. Here’s a clear look at how that decision gets made.

What is an instructional strategy?

An instructional strategy is the overarching plan or approach a teacher uses to facilitate student learning. They’re not just about delivering content – they’re about creating conditions where students understand, engage with, and retain knowledge over time.

Aligning the strategy with the objective is non-negotiable. A mismatch here means students may be busy, but they won’t necessarily be learning what the lesson intends.

Teaching methodology

The next consideration is which teaching methodology best supports the stated objective. Different subjects carry different cognitive demands. A complex scientific process may call for a step-by-step, structured approach. A literature class exploring multiple interpretations may benefit far more from Socratic discussion or reader-response techniques. The strategy must match what the content actually requires – not simply what the teacher finds comfortable or familiar.

At the same time, NC State’s guidance on selecting teaching strategies reminds educators to ask: “What do I know about my students that will affect my teaching strategies?” and “How do I motivate students to learn and stay engaged?” These are not decorative questions – they directly influence which strategy will succeed in a given classroom. Crucially, teachers should also consider their students’ background knowledge, confidence levels, and current readiness. Oliva’s guidelines for effective strategy selection

Peter F. Oliva, a prominent curriculum theorist and author of Developing the Curriculum, offered a structured framework for thinking about instructional strategy selection as part of his broader model of curriculum development. In Oliva’s curriculum model, selecting instructional strategies is embedded as a dedicated component – it is not an afterthought but a core step that directly follows the specification of instructional objectives.

Oliva’s approach is built on the idea that strategy selection must be comprehensive, systematic, and flexible. His model treats curriculum development as a cooperative process – one in which strategies are chosen based on a careful study of what the curriculum is trying to achieve and who it is serving. Several of his key guidelines stand out:

Clarity of purpose: The chosen strategy must clearly align with the lesson’s stated goals. Without this alignment, even a well-executed strategy produces shallow or misdirected learning.

Consideration of student needs: Oliva’s model explicitly begins from an analysis of student needs. Strategy selection must reflect what is known about the learners – their abilities, prior knowledge, and context. Teachers should use quizzes, discussion checks, group activities, and formative assessments to gauge whether the chosen strategy is working – and be prepared to revise it. Evaluation in this model is not a final judgment but a continuous feedback loop that cycles back to improve both instruction and the curriculum itself.

Adaptability: No single method works in all contexts. Oliva’s model is explicitly designed to allow planners to revisit and refine strategies at each stage. The goal is a strategy that is responsive – one that can be adjusted as real classroom data emerges.

Taken together, these guidelines reinforce a central truth about instructional strategy: it is a living decision, not a fixed one.
