Every teacher has faced this moment: you’ve planned a lesson, you know the content inside out, but something about the delivery just doesn’t land. Students look confused, disengaged, or simply bored. More often than not, the problem isn’t the content – it’s the medium through which it’s delivered. Choosing the right teaching media is one of the most consequential instructional decisions an educator makes, yet it rarely gets the attention it deserves. This post breaks down how to think about media selection strategically, so your teaching tools actively support – not hinder – student learning.

Why media matters in teaching
Research consistently shows that using media to enhance teaching engages students, improves retention of knowledge, motivates interest in the subject matter, and illustrates the relevance of concepts. But here’s the key: media isn’t neutral. As Tony Bates notes in Teaching in a Digital Age, media can be designed or used in ways that influence – for better or worse – how learners interpret meaning. This makes it essential for educators to understand not just what media to use, but how media shapes understanding.
The power of visual and auditory tools
Human beings process information primarily through sight and hearing. Studies on visual aids in education indicate that around 83% of what we learn comes through the sense of sight, while approximately 11% comes through hearing – meaning media that combines both channels has a distinct pedagogical advantage. Research on audio-visual multimodal input confirms that the efficiency of obtaining information through the combination of audio and visuals is far more effective than through either channel alone, and that information absorbed this way tends to be more durable in memory. This isn’t just theory – it directly shapes what media formats you should prioritise for different types of content.
A study published in Procedia Social and Behavioral Sciences found that audio-visual aids are among the most effective tools for disseminating knowledge in higher education, particularly because they make complex content more accessible and engaging. Similarly, empirical research on multimodal teaching found that combining visual and auditory information in the classroom significantly improved student performance compared to traditional lecture-based settings.
Types of teaching media
Teaching media broadly spans several categories, each with specific strengths. Understanding what each format does well is the foundation of good media selection.
Print and text-based media
Print materials – textbooks, study guides, workbooks, and handouts – remain a cornerstone of education. They offer a tactile, distraction-free experience and are particularly effective for introducing foundational concepts and structured reading. Their reliability in low-connectivity environments makes them indispensable, especially in resource-constrained settings.
Slides and presentation tools
Presentation tools like PowerPoint or Google Slides work well for structuring lectures, summarising key points, and supporting verbal explanations with visual cues. They’re straightforward to produce and familiar to most educators. However, poorly designed slides – too much text, cluttered layouts – can hinder rather than help comprehension. Slides should complement spoken content, not replicate it verbatim.
Video
Video has become one of the most powerful tools in a teacher’s arsenal. Pre-recorded lectures, demonstrations, documentary content, and explainer videos engage both visual and auditory senses simultaneously. Unlike live demonstrations, recorded video ensures every student gets the same clear view and can replay content as needed until they achieve mastery. One important design principle: shorter is better. As Bates and Gallagher’s work cited in instructional design literature notes, content broken into shorter segments – around eight minutes or less – tends to be more easily absorbed than extended continuous videos.
Simulations and interactive media
Simulations create realistic models of actual situations or environments, allowing for continual observation and skill practice without real-world consequences. They are especially effective for procedural knowledge – teaching steps that need to be performed in sequence – and for replicating scenarios that would otherwise be unsafe, expensive, or impossible to arrange in a classroom. Medical training, engineering labs, and chemistry practicals are classic use cases. Interactive media more broadly – quizzes, branching scenarios, digital exercises with instant feedback – support active learning and help transfer knowledge from working memory to long-term memory through repeated engagement.
Podcasts and audio
Audio media is often underutilised. Podcasts, recorded discussions, and narrated walkthroughs are particularly effective for language learning, expert interviews, and content where tone, intonation, or storytelling carries meaning. They’re also more accessible to learners on the move and those with visual impairments. As noted in instructional design research, cost and ease of use are legitimate reasons to choose a simpler medium like audio when it can achieve the same learning objective as a richer format.
Matching media to learning objectives
This is the most critical principle in media selection: the medium must serve the objective, not the other way around. Effective media selection means choosing formats that align with what you want students to be able to do by the end of the lesson – not simply what’s easiest to produce or most visually impressive.
The first step in choosing the right media is to clearly define the learning objective. Are you aiming for deep understanding, skill development, or recall of information? For example, if the goal is to help students develop practical skills – such as performing a lab experiment or conducting a research project – video demonstrations or interactive simulations may be ideal. If the goal is to promote critical thinking or discussion, media like live webinars, podcasts, or structured debates may be more appropriate.
Research using the Analytic Hierarchy Process in higher education found that the most important criteria for media selection – in order of priority – are: conformity to the learning purpose, the appropriateness of the learning method, the state of participants, availability, and efficiency. Notice that the learning purpose ranks first. Everything else is secondary.
Here’s a practical framework to apply:
- Recall and comprehension objectives: Text, slides, and short explainer videos work well.
- Conceptual understanding: Animations, diagrams, and infographics help visualise abstract ideas.
- Procedural skills: Step-by-step video demonstrations and simulations are most effective.
- Analysis and critical thinking: Case studies, discussion forums, and problem-solving scenarios are better suited.
- Application and creation: Project-based tasks supported by interactive platforms allow learners to apply and produce.
It’s also important to account for the complexity of the content. Abstract concepts – like theoretical frameworks in philosophy or economics – benefit from visual representations, analogies rendered as diagrams, or animated walkthroughs. Concrete, procedural content – like assembling equipment or writing code – is often best taught through close-up video demonstrations or interactive simulations where learners can practise step by step.
Balancing resources and accessibility
Selecting ideal media is only half the challenge. The other half is ensuring that the media you choose is actually accessible to your students. As Tony Bates observes, if a student cannot access or use a technology, there will be no learning from that technology – regardless of how well designed it is. This makes access and ease of use stronger practical discriminators than educational effectiveness alone when choosing media.
UNESCO’s work on digital learning equity highlights that 2.6 billion people globally still lack internet access, with the majority living in rural areas. This is a stark reminder that media choices have equity implications. A video-heavy course may be excellent pedagogically but functionally inaccessible to students in areas with limited bandwidth. In such contexts, downloadable content, SMS-based learning, or well-designed print materials may serve learners better than sophisticated interactive platforms.
Accessibility also extends to learners with disabilities. UNESCO underscores that technology can support inclusive education by providing information in multiple formats and engaging learners dynamically – but only when accessibility is built into the design from the start, not retrofitted later. Practically, this means:
- Adding captions and transcripts to all video and audio content.
- Ensuring images have descriptive alt text for visually impaired learners.
- Choosing platforms that work across devices, including low-cost smartphones.
- Offering media in multiple formats so learners can choose what suits them.
The Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework recommends planning for accessibility from the outset – for instance, using accessible templates in PowerPoint from the beginning saves significant effort compared to retrofitting slides later. Incorporating a variety of text, audio, images, and videos ensures that you cater to a wide range of learning preferences and abilities, making education genuinely inclusive rather than nominally so.
Cost is another practical reality. Not every institution has the budget for high-end simulations or professional video production. The principle here is to make the most of what’s available. A well-structured podcast can achieve the same outcome as a polished lecture recording at a fraction of the cost. Open Educational Resources (OER), as defined by UNESCO, offer freely available, openly licensed learning materials – videos, textbooks, interactive modules – that educators can adapt and use without cost barriers.
Integrating media into lesson plans
Even the best-chosen media can fall flat without thoughtful integration into the lesson structure. Media should not be added to a lesson as decoration or to fill time – it needs to be purposefully woven into the flow of instruction.
Plan for media to do specific work
Media can be used to motivate discussions or consolidate concepts, but it must be given a defined instructional role. Before including any media in a lesson, ask: what will students do with this? A video shown without a guided task or follow-up discussion is a missed opportunity. Embedding reflection questions before or after a video, or requiring students to annotate a diagram, turns passive exposure into active learning.
Avoid overloading learners
The cognitive theory of multimedia learning establishes that learners have separate but limited channels for processing visual and auditory information. Overloading either channel – too much text on a slide, too many animations, audio narration competing with on-screen text – increases cognitive load and reduces comprehension. Good media integration means using each element purposefully and stripping out anything that doesn’t add instructional value.
Sequence media appropriately
The order in which media is introduced matters. Print or text-based material may work well to introduce foundational vocabulary before a video explores a concept in depth. A simulation is most effective after learners have some conceptual grounding – not as a first exposure. Research supports redesigning content for asynchronous use – adding built-in activities, checkpoints, and feedback prompts – rather than simply uploading a live lecture recording and expecting equivalent learning outcomes.
Evaluate and iterate
No media choice should be treated as permanent. Gathering student feedback, monitoring engagement data on digital platforms, and reviewing assessment outcomes all provide evidence about whether a media choice is working. Continuously evaluating the effectiveness of media choices and making adjustments based on learner feedback and performance data is essential to improving over time. A willingness to swap a poorly received format for a different one – even mid-course – reflects good pedagogical judgment, not inconsistency.
Combine media thoughtfully
No single learning resource is good for all learning objectives. Effective lesson design typically combines two or three media formats that complement each other – for example, a short reading to introduce a topic, followed by a video demonstration, followed by an interactive quiz to consolidate understanding. The goal is coherence, not variety for its own sake. Each format should hand the learner to the next stage of understanding rather than simply repeat the same content in a different wrapper.
Media selection is ultimately a pedagogical decision grounded in clarity of purpose. When you know what you want students to learn, who your students are, what resources are realistically available, and how the media will fit into your lesson sequence, the right choice becomes far more obvious. The technology itself matters less than the thinking behind it.
