India’s higher education system is one of the largest and most diverse in the world, with over 1,100 universities as of 2025. What makes this landscape fascinating is that it isn’t built on a single template. Different institutions reflect different educational philosophies – some inherited from Europe, others developed to meet India’s own social and economic realities. Understanding these university models helps explain why an IIT feels so different from a JNU, or why St. Stephen’s College operates on principles quite distinct from those of IGNOU. Here’s a clear look at the major university models in India and what each one stands for.

The Humboldtian research university model

This model originates from the educational philosophy of Wilhelm von Humboldt, who developed it in Prussia between 1809 and 1810 to reform the existing education system. Its defining idea is simple but powerful: teaching and research are inseparable. Students are not passive recipients of knowledge – they are expected to participate actively in generating it.

The Humboldtian model prioritises academic freedom, meaning scholars can investigate any question without ideological, political, or commercial interference. Knowledge is built on logic, empiricism, and free inquiry rather than authority or tradition. Research is not something that happens separately from instruction – it shapes the classroom itself.

Indian examples: IISc Bangalore and University of Hyderabad

The clearest Indian embodiment of this model is the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore, established in 1909. Since its inception, IISc has placed equal emphasis on fundamental scientific inquiry and the practical application of research findings. It consistently ranks first among Indian universities in the NIRF rankings and has been recognised as the fastest-rising South Asian university in QS World University Rankings, rated highest globally for citations per faculty member. Researchers at IISc are actively encouraged to push disciplinary boundaries, with students conducting the bulk of the research under close faculty supervision.

The University of Hyderabad similarly reflects this ethos, functioning as a city campus focused on advanced postgraduate teaching and research. These institutions share a commitment to building knowledge rather than simply transmitting it – which is the essence of the Humboldtian ideal.

One limitation of this model in the Indian context is its highly specialised orientation, which can make it less accessible to students seeking a broad, generalist education or direct professional preparation.

The British residential university model

The British tradition of higher education places strong emphasis on the residential campus as an environment for intellectual and social formation. Learning happens not just in classrooms but through sustained, close interaction between students and teachers – in seminars, common rooms, and shared living spaces. This immersive experience is expected to develop not just academic skills but also character, civic sensibility, and independent thinking.

Unlike the Humboldtian model’s focus on graduate research, the British model places significant weight on undergraduate education within a holistic academic community. Students live and learn together, creating a culture of intellectual debate that extends beyond formal instruction.

Indian examples: JNU and BHU

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi is among the most recognisable examples of this model in India. Its residential campus is designed to foster a vibrant intellectual culture – students who leave the university are described as acquiring a permanently changed outlook on life, shaped by the intensity of campus debates and interdisciplinary engagement. JNU’s academic rigour in the humanities, social sciences, and international relations is widely acknowledged, and its school of international studies enjoys a particularly strong reputation.

Banaras Hindu University (BHU), established in 1916 in Varanasi, is a fully residential institution with a sprawling 1,300-acre campus. It offers an unusually wide range of disciplines under one roof – from the Institute of Medical Sciences to the Institute of Technology to the Institute of Agricultural Sciences – within a campus environment that blends traditional academic culture with modern facilities. The residential character of both JNU and BHU creates conditions for the kind of sustained intellectual community that defines this model.

The French Grandes Écoles model

After the French Revolution disrupted the university system, France developed a parallel structure of elite, specialised schools – the Grandes Écoles – dedicated to producing highly trained professionals in specific fields such as engineering, public administration, and business. These institutions are commonly focused on a single academic discipline and are defined by rigorous entrance requirements, a competitive selection process, and a direct pipeline to top positions in industry and government.

Unlike the broad, freedom-oriented Humboldtian university, the Grandes Écoles system imposes clear disciplinary focus and is explicitly oriented toward professional outcomes. Entry is highly selective, and the education is structured to prepare graduates for leadership roles.

Indian examples: IITs and IIMs

India’s Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) share key characteristics with this model. Both are standalone institutions with a sharply defined disciplinary mandate – technology and management respectively. The IIMs have evolved as elite institutions due to a combination of a focused operational scale, strong governance autonomy, and substantial government support. Entry to the IIMs through the Common Admission Test (CAT), or to the IITs through the JEE, is among the most competitive processes in the world.

Graduates from these institutions are placed in key positions across India’s leading industries. Like the Grandes Écoles model, however, these institutions have attracted debate around access and equity – their benefits are concentrated among a small, highly selected group, and the cost of preparation for entrance examinations creates barriers for many students. The Indian Institutes of Management Act, 2017 officially designates the IIMs as institutions of national importance with a mandate for global excellence in management education and research.

The Chicago liberal education model

The University of Chicago, particularly through its distinctive general education curriculum, developed a model built on the idea that a university should produce independent thinkers rather than narrowly trained specialists. This approach requires students to engage seriously with a wide range of subjects – from the sciences and social sciences to philosophy, literature, and history – before or alongside their chosen specialisation. The goal is to cultivate intellectual breadth, critical reasoning, and the ability to engage meaningfully with complex, contested questions.

This model deliberately resists the pressure to reduce education to vocational preparation. It values the capacity to think across disciplines as essential to both professional life and democratic citizenship.

Indian example: St. Stephen’s College

St. Stephen’s College in Delhi, affiliated with the University of Delhi, is frequently cited as the closest Indian approximation of this model. The college offers a range of undergraduate courses across history, economics, philosophy, and literature, and its academic culture places strong emphasis on critical debate, rigorous reading, and interdisciplinary engagement. Delhi University as a whole, with colleges like St. Stephen’s, Hindu College, Miranda House, and Lady Shri Ram, functions as what analysts describe as a massive federation of elite liberal arts colleges.

The liberal education approach faces a structural challenge in India: the higher education system has historically prioritised specialised degrees in engineering, medicine, and law. However, this is changing. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 strongly encourages the shift toward multidisciplinary education, calling for technical training to be integrated with the humanities and social sciences. Private universities like Ashoka University and O.P. Jindal Global University have accelerated this trend, and even IITs and IIMs are now expanding their humanities offerings in response to industry demand for well-rounded graduates.

Other university models in India

Beyond these four internationally derived frameworks, India has developed its own distinctive institutional types that respond to specific national needs.

Affiliating universities

The affiliating university model is the most widespread structure in Indian higher education. A central or state university grants affiliation to large numbers of colleges across a region, setting curricula, conducting examinations, and awarding degrees on behalf of those institutions. India has over 1,000 universities and tens of thousands of affiliated colleges regulated by the University Grants Commission (UGC). This model dramatically expands access to higher education but raises consistent questions about quality and uniformity, since the affiliating body has limited ability to monitor academic standards across hundreds of colleges.

Agricultural universities

India established a network of dedicated agricultural universities following independence, modelled partly on the American land-grant university concept. These institutions focus specifically on agricultural sciences, veterinary sciences, and related disciplines, combining research with extension services that directly benefit farming communities. They represent a deliberate attempt to link university knowledge production to rural development – a particularly important function given India’s agricultural economy.

Professional universities

Professional universities specialise in a single professional field – law, medicine, architecture, or management – offering focused, vocationally oriented programmes within a dedicated institutional structure. Institutions like the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and the National Law Universities (NLUs) operate on this model. They provide depth of training in a specific field without the breadth expected of a comprehensive university.

Open universities

Open universities are designed to reach students who cannot access conventional higher education due to geographic, economic, or social barriers. The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), established by Parliament in 1985, is the world’s largest university by enrolment, serving over three million students across India and 40 countries. It delivers education through printed materials, audio-visual content, radio and television broadcasts, and digital platforms, supported by a network of regional and learner support centres. IGNOU’s mission has always been explicitly democratic – to bring higher education within reach of disadvantaged and geographically remote populations who would otherwise be excluded from the system.

Why these models matter

Each of these models reflects a different answer to the same fundamental question: what is a university for? The Humboldtian model says it is for generating new knowledge. The British residential model says it is for forming an intellectual community. The Grandes Écoles model says it is for producing professional leaders. The Chicago model says it is for cultivating critical, independent minds. And India’s homegrown models – affiliating, agricultural, professional, and open universities – answer that it is also for expanding access, serving specific sectors, and reaching citizens who would otherwise be left out entirely.

The NEP 2020 is pushing many of these models toward greater convergence, encouraging even specialised institutions to become multidisciplinary and research-oriented. The proposed Multidisciplinary Education and Research Universities (MERUs) are envisioned to achieve global standards by combining the research orientation of the Humboldtian model with the breadth of the liberal education tradition. How well these different models adapt – and whether they can be integrated without losing what makes each of them distinctive – will shape the quality and character of Indian higher education for decades to come.
