Strategies for protecting research time
The most effective approach is to treat research time the same way you treat class time: schedule it, protect it, and show up for it. Identifying the time of day when you are most mentally productive and blocking it out in your calendar for research – making it look “busy” – is a practical step that many experienced academics recommend. If that window is used for meetings or administrative tasks, the research simply does not happen.

Integrating research into teaching
One of the most sustainable ways to balance these two demands is to stop treating them as entirely separate. Students benefit from exposure to active research, and faculty benefit from the structured thinking that teaching requires. It is a relationship that strengthens both activities rather than pitting them against each other.
Setting clear, achievable goals for both teaching and research and building a structured weekly schedule remains one of the most reliable approaches. Digital project management tools help keep both sets of responsibilities visible and organized, reducing the mental load of trying to hold everything in your head. And perhaps most importantly, being realistic about commitments – including the willingness to decline co-authorship invitations or service roles when the workload does not support them – is essential for long-term sustainability.
University faculty members spend an average of 53 hours per week on work-related activities, and technology now offers real relief – automated grading systems, syllabus creation tools, and learning management platforms can reduce administrative burdens significantly, freeing up time that would otherwise be lost to routine tasks. The goal is not to work harder, but to work in a way that is both effective and sustainable.
