Stanford Teaching Commons highlights that students who might feel inhibited from voicing opinions in class can benefit from the written format of a discussion forum, enabling them to contribute ideas they might otherwise hold back.

Development of critical thinking

Well-designed discussion prompts push students beyond surface-level recall. When a question asks learners to analyse, evaluate, or apply concepts – rather than just summarise them – it triggers higher-order thinking. Best discussion forum tools for educators

The tool you choose for hosting discussions can significantly affect student engagement. Different platforms have different strengths, and the best choice depends on your course goals, student demographics, and institutional resources. Here are some of the most widely used options.

Moodle forums

Moodle is one of the most popular open-source learning management systems in the world, and its built-in forum tool is a go-to for many educators. Moodle offers several forum types, including simple single-discussion boards, standard forums where anyone can start a new thread, and question-and-answer forums where students must post their own response before they can see what others have written.

The Q&A format is particularly useful because it prevents students from copying or borrowing from each other’s initial responses. Moodle is also highly customisable – instructors can set posting deadlines, enable ratings, attach files, and track participation through the platform’s analytics. For institutions that already use Moodle as their LMS, its forums integrate seamlessly into the course structure, making it easy for students to find and participate in discussions alongside other course materials.

Facebook groups

While not designed specifically for education, Facebook Groups have become a surprisingly popular tool for class discussions, especially in settings where students are already active on the platform. The familiar interface can lower the barrier to participation. Students can share links, photos, and videos within the group, which can make discussions more dynamic and visually engaging.

However, there are real drawbacks. Facebook is a social media platform, and students can easily get distracted by non-academic content. Privacy is another concern – not all students may want to use their personal Facebook accounts for academic purposes. Educators who choose this route should establish clear guidelines about what is and isn’t appropriate in the group and consider the potential distractions carefully.

Flipgrid (now Flip, integrated into Microsoft Teams)

Flipgrid was an innovative video-based discussion platform that allowed students to post short video responses to prompts rather than text. It was especially effective for building a sense of community and connection in online courses. Research published through the ACM found that 92% of surveyed students reported that Flipgrid increased their sense of connectedness to their course, peers, and instructor. The platform excelled at bringing body language, tone of voice, and facial expressions into asynchronous discussions – elements that are completely missing from text-based forums.

It’s important to note that Microsoft, which acquired Flipgrid, retired the standalone Flipgrid platform on September 30, 2024. Its video discussion features have been integrated into Microsoft Teams for Education. Teachers who previously used Flipgrid can now create video-based assignments and discussion tasks directly within their Teams class environment. While the brand name has changed, the core functionality – recording short video responses, peer interaction through video replies, and teacher moderation – remains available through the Teams interface.

Other tools worth considering

Beyond the three tools above, several other platforms support online discussions effectively. Canvas Discussions, built into the Canvas LMS, offers threaded discussions with integrated rubric grading. Piazza is popular in STEM courses for its wiki-style collaborative Q&A format. Padlet provides a visual, bulletin-board-style space where students can post text, images, and links. Discord, while originally designed for gaming communities, is increasingly used by educators for both synchronous and asynchronous text-based discussions. Each of these tools has its own strengths, and the right choice depends on the specific needs of your course and students.

Tips for running effective discussion forums

Having the right tool is only part of the equation. The way you design and facilitate discussions determines whether they become meaningful learning experiences or just another chore for students.

Write open-ended, thought-provoking prompts

Questions that can be answered with a simple “yes” or “no” or a factual recall response won’t generate real discussion. Instead, craft prompts that require students to analyse, compare, evaluate, or apply concepts. For example, rather than asking “What is constructivism?” ask “How would a constructivist approach change the way you teach a specific topic in your subject area?”

Set clear expectations from day one

Students need to know how often they should post, what quality looks like, and when deadlines fall. Share the rubric at the start of the course. Specify word count guidelines if appropriate – initial posts of 200-300 words and replies of 100-150 words are common recommendations that encourage substance without overwhelming readers.

Participate as an instructor, but don’t dominate

When educators chime in occasionally with guiding questions, encouragement, or corrections, it signals that the forum matters and that someone is reading the contributions. But over-participating can stifle student conversation. The goal is to nudge, not to lecture. Joining the discussion intermittently, highlighting insightful posts, and redirecting off-topic threads are all effective strategies.

Assign roles to promote accountability

Rotating roles such as discussion leader, summariser, or devil’s advocate can keep forums fresh and ensure broader participation. When students know they’ll be responsible for leading a discussion, they tend to prepare more thoroughly and engage more actively.

Challenges to keep in mind

Discussion forums aren’t without their difficulties. Low participation is a common problem, especially when forums are optional or when students don’t see the connection between the discussion and their grades. Making participation a graded component of the course – even a small one – can make a significant difference.

Surface-level responses are another issue. Students sometimes post just enough to meet the minimum requirements without truly engaging with the material. This is where a strong rubric and meaningful prompts come into play. If students know that quality matters more than quantity, the level of discussion tends to rise.

Finally, technical barriers can affect participation. Not all students are comfortable navigating forum software, especially if it’s new to them. A brief orientation session or a practice post at the start of the course can help everyone get on the same page.
