What is assessment?
Assessment is the process of gathering, analysing, and interpreting information about student learning. According to the Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning at Northern Illinois University, assessment refers to the ways instructors collect data about their teaching and their students’ learning. This data can come from observations, tests, projects, discussions, or any activity that reveals what students know and can do.
But assessment doesn’t stop at data collection. Once information is gathered, teachers evaluate it – making judgments about the quality and depth of student understanding. This evaluation then drives decision-making: What should I re-teach? Which students need extra support? Is this teaching strategy working?
In short, assessment is not the end of learning – it’s a tool that fuels better teaching and deeper learning throughout the instructional process.
Key types of assessment
There are several well-established types of assessment, each serving a unique purpose at different stages of the teaching-learning cycle. The four most widely discussed are diagnostic, formative, summative, and performance-based assessment. Let’s break each one down.
Diagnostic assessment
Diagnostic assessment happens before instruction begins. Its purpose is to find out what students already know – and what they don’t – about an upcoming topic. Think of it as a baseline check. Teachers use diagnostic assessments to identify existing knowledge, spot misconceptions, and understand learning gaps so they can plan their lessons accordingly.
Common forms of diagnostic assessment include pre-tests, self-assessments, short quizzes, KWL charts (Know-Want to Know-Learned), and brief interviews. As noted by the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt education blog, diagnostic assessments help educators identify what students have yet to learn, uncover any gaps that might impede progress, and recognise strengths that can be encouraged.
Importantly, diagnostic assessments are low-stakes. They are not graded and don’t count toward a student’s final score. Their value lies entirely in the instructional insights they provide to the teacher.
Formative assessment
Formative assessment takes place during the learning process. It’s ongoing, frequent, and designed to monitor student understanding in real time. The goal is not to assign a grade but to gather feedback that both teachers and students can act on immediately.
Examples of formative assessment include classroom discussions, exit tickets, peer reviews, short quizzes, reflective journals, question-and-answer sessions, and informal observations. According to Times Higher Education, formative assessment encourages students to take an active role in their learning, promotes self-regulation, strengthens student autonomy, and fosters meaningful teacher-student interaction.
The key characteristic of formative assessment is its responsiveness. When a teacher notices through a quick class poll that most students haven’t grasped a concept, they can immediately adjust – reteach the material, use a different example, or provide additional practice. This makes formative assessment one of the most powerful tools for improving student outcomes on a day-to-day basis.
Summative assessment
Summative assessment occurs at the end of a unit, term, or course. Its purpose is to evaluate what students have learned after instruction is complete. Unlike formative assessment, which is process-oriented, summative assessment focuses on the final product – a measure of overall achievement.
Final exams, end-of-term projects, standardised tests, term papers, and portfolio submissions are all typical summative assessments. As explained by Northern Illinois University’s instructional guide, summative assessments are typically high-stakes and are used to determine whether a student has reached an acceptable level of knowledge to progress to the next stage of learning.
While summative assessments are essential for accountability and grading, they have a limitation: by the time results are available, the opportunity to adjust instruction for that particular unit has passed. That’s why experts recommend using summative assessment alongside diagnostic and formative methods – not as a standalone measure.
Performance-based assessment
Performance-based assessment (PBA) goes beyond traditional tests by requiring students to demonstrate their knowledge through real-world tasks. Instead of selecting answers on a multiple-choice exam, students might design a science experiment, deliver a presentation, write a policy proposal, or build a working model.
According to Edutopia, performance-based assessments measure a student’s ability to apply skills and knowledge learned from a unit of study, typically challenging students to use higher-order thinking skills to create a product or complete a process. These assessments are characterised by being complex, authentic, open-ended, and time-bound.
PBAs are especially valuable because they assess both the process and the product. A teacher doesn’t just look at a finished essay – they evaluate the student’s research methods, reasoning, and revision process as well. This makes performance-based assessment a comprehensive measure of student capability that goes far beyond rote memorisation.
Examples of PBA formats include project-based tasks, portfolios, oral presentations, lab experiments with written reports, debates, and simulations. Research by eLearning Industry highlights that these assessments help learners develop deeper understanding and higher-order thinking skills such as critical analysis and problem-solving.
Assessment for, of, and as learning
Beyond the four types described above, educators also classify assessment by its relationship to the learning process. This framework – assessment for learning, assessment of learning, and assessment as learning – was popularised by researchers and education bodies such as the Assessment Reform Group in the UK and has become a cornerstone of modern assessment theory.
Assessment for learning
Assessment for learning is closely aligned with formative assessment. It refers to any assessment activity used to inform and improve the teaching-learning process while it is still ongoing. The focus here is on gathering evidence about where students are in their learning, where they need to go, and how best to get there.
Teachers use strategies like questioning, observations, and informal checks to make real-time instructional decisions. The emphasis is not on grading but on using assessment data to guide the next steps in teaching. For example, a quick thumbs-up/thumbs-down activity after explaining a concept helps the teacher immediately gauge comprehension and decide whether to move on or revisit the material.
Assessment of learning
Assessment of learning corresponds to summative assessment. It measures what students have achieved at the end of an instructional period. This is the type of assessment most people are familiar with – final exams, standardised tests, and end-of-unit projects that produce a grade or score.
As noted by Pearson Assessments, assessments of learning evaluate student understanding by comparing achievement against benchmarks or standards. They provide a snapshot of proficiency at a particular point in time and are often used for reporting, certification, and accountability purposes.
While assessment of learning is necessary for measuring outcomes, it works best when supported by the other two forms. Without ongoing formative feedback (assessment for learning), a final exam result tells you what went wrong but offers no opportunity to fix it.
Assessment as learning
Assessment as learning is the most student-centred of the three. In this approach, the assessment process itself becomes a learning experience. Students monitor their own progress, reflect on their work, and use self-assessment and peer feedback to deepen their understanding.
This approach relies heavily on metacognition – students’ awareness of their own thinking and learning processes. When students evaluate their own essays using a rubric, identify areas of weakness, and set goals for improvement, they are engaged in assessment as learning.
According to the California Department of Education, performance-based assessments that ask students to show what they know by actually completing authentic tasks are strong examples of assessment as learning, because they highlight the self-assessing and self-monitoring processes students use during the learning experience.
The three forms are not mutually exclusive – they work best when used together as an integrated system. A well-designed classroom assessment strategy will include all three, creating a continuous cycle where assessment informs instruction, measures outcomes, and empowers students to take ownership of their learning.

Assessment isn’t a bureaucratic exercise – it’s one of the most powerful levers teachers have for improving student outcomes. Here’s why effective assessment practices matter so much.
