How does knowledge move from one person to another, from one generation to the next, or from one part of the world to another? This question sits at the very heart of education. Knowledge has never been transferred through a single channel – it has always flowed through multiple avenues, shaped by the tools, technologies, and social conditions of each era. Today, those avenues range from centuries-old oral traditions to cloud-based learning platforms, and understanding how they work – and who they reach – is essential for anyone invested in education.

From spoken word to written text: the roots of knowledge transfer
Long before schools, textbooks, or the internet existed, human communities transferred knowledge through oral tradition – storytelling, song, ritual, and spoken instruction passed from elders to the young. Oral tradition is not simply talking; it is a structured, often rigorous system of knowledge preservation. The Hindu Vedas, for instance, were transmitted entirely through memorized recitation for centuries, with extraordinary precision, before they were ever written down. Among the Ojibwa of North America, initiates spent years learning over a thousand medicine songs and cultural laws, expected to recite them without error.
Oral traditions function as dynamic educational systems – they adapt knowledge to changing social conditions through retelling and reinterpretation, keeping it relevant across generations. They also serve as repositories of collective memory, preserving migration histories, ecological knowledge, customary laws, and moral teachings that are not found in any written archive.
However, oral transmission has its vulnerabilities. The UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues has noted that the migration of youth away from communities, the passing of elders, and the declining status of traditional knowledge as a legitimate knowledge system are all causing the loss of orally transmitted wisdom at an alarming rate.
The shift to written and recorded knowledge
The transition from oral to written knowledge transfer was one of history’s most consequential shifts. Ancient scripts such as cuneiform in Mesopotamia and hieroglyphics in Egypt enabled more precise documentation of knowledge, underpinning formal education and record-keeping. The printing press then accelerated this process, making knowledge reproducible at scale for the first time. Libraries, textbooks, encyclopaedias, and academic journals all extended this tradition – preserving knowledge in recorded devices that could outlast any individual memory.
These recorded devices – from clay tablets to printed books – democratized access to knowledge in their time. A student in one century could read the work of a thinker from several centuries earlier. Knowledge was no longer bound to living memory alone. This principle of easy, persistent access to recorded knowledge is precisely what digital technology has inherited and amplified today.
ICT and the transformation of knowledge transfer in education
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has fundamentally restructured how knowledge is created, shared, and accessed. ICT enhances the teaching and learning process by providing new forms of interaction and access to educational resources that foster collaborative learning, moving education beyond the one-directional model of a teacher lecturing to passive students. Learning management systems like Moodle and Google Classroom, video conferencing tools, digital libraries, and open educational repositories have all extended the reach of formal education across geographical and time barriers.
One of ICT’s most significant contributions is its capacity to make learning available anywhere and at any time. Through ICT, online course materials can be accessible around the clock, and teleconferencing classrooms allow both learners and teachers to interact simultaneously regardless of physical location. For students in remote or rural areas, this represents a genuine expansion of educational opportunity that was previously unimaginable.
ICT gadgets and easy access to knowledge
The widespread availability of smartphones, tablets, and low-cost laptops has made ICT gadgets the primary interface through which millions of people access knowledge today. A smartphone in a student’s hand is potentially a gateway to entire university lecture series, research databases, language learning tools, and collaborative platforms. Technology has become the knowledge transfer highway in most countries, reshaping not just how students learn, but how teachers teach, how institutions operate, and how knowledge itself is produced and validated.
Beyond formal classrooms, ICT gadgets enable informal knowledge transfer at massive scale. Platforms like YouTube, Wikipedia, Khan Academy, and open courseware initiatives from leading universities mean that a motivated learner with internet access can pursue knowledge in virtually any domain, entirely outside traditional educational institutions. This has profoundly changed the relationship between knowledge and formal credentialing.
Reinterpreting knowledge through digital tools
Digital technology does not just transmit existing knowledge – it actively enables its reinterpretation. Historical records once confined to a single archive can now be digitized and shared globally, allowing scholars across continents to re-examine and recontextualize them. Indigenous communities, for instance, are using digital tools to document and revitalize oral knowledge systems that were at risk of disappearing – some Inuit communities have created apps to record and share traditional ecological knowledge of ice, sea, and land with younger generations in formats they engage with daily. This represents a powerful reinterpretation of how traditional knowledge can survive in the digital age.
In educational contexts, reinterpretation also happens when learners from different cultural backgrounds encounter the same content and engage with it through their own lenses. Digital platforms allow for dynamic, immersive content adjusted to current requirements, making it possible to present knowledge in ways that are culturally responsive, multilingual, and contextually relevant rather than fixed in a single authoritative form.
Global migration and cross-cultural knowledge transfer
Migration has always been one of the most powerful engines of knowledge transfer. As communities moved – whether through voluntary migration, trade, conquest, or displacement – they carried their knowledge systems with them. As communities interacted through migration or conquest, they often assimilated knowledge from neighboring societies, enhancing the depth and breadth of their oral and written narratives. This is how agricultural techniques, medicinal knowledge, mathematical systems, and philosophical traditions spread across the ancient world.
In the contemporary context, global migration continues to transfer knowledge across borders. Skilled professionals bring technical expertise from one country to another; students who study abroad carry new knowledge frameworks home; diaspora communities maintain and transmit cultural knowledge across generations in new national settings. Importantly, this flow is rarely one-directional. Host societies gain knowledge from migrant communities even as migrants adapt to and absorb knowledge from their new environments.
The digital divide: inequality in access to digital knowledge
The expansion of ICT-based knowledge transfer carries a serious structural problem: access is not equal. The digital divide refers to unequal access to and use of digital technology, encompassing motivational, material, skills, and usage dimensions – and it maps closely onto existing inequalities of income, geography, age, and gender. Those already disadvantaged are most likely to be left out of the digital knowledge economy.
The scale of this inequality is significant. Delegates at the United Nations Second Committee have noted that only 36 per cent of the population in the least developed countries use the internet, compared to a global average of 66 per cent, with an estimated 2.7 billion people still offline. For these populations, the shift to digital-first knowledge transfer is not an expansion of opportunity – it is a new form of exclusion.
The divide operates at multiple levels. Scholars identify at least three levels of digital inequality: unequal access to devices and internet; differences in the frequency and quality of instructional technology use; and disparities in the educational outcomes that result. Even among students who technically have access to a device, significant differences remain in the quality of connectivity, the digital literacy needed to use platforms effectively, and the extent to which digital tools are integrated into their instruction in meaningful ways.
Gender and the digital divide
Gender compounds these inequalities. According to a UNICEF report, 9 out of 10 young women and teenage girls in the world’s lowest-income countries do not have internet access. In developing countries, cultural norms that prioritize boys’ access to devices over girls’ further limits young women’s participation in the digital knowledge economy, with long-term consequences for their educational and economic outcomes.
Bridging the divide
Addressing the digital divide requires more than distributing devices. The digital divide is not only interstate but also intrastate – even when developing regions acquire digital technologies, they risk exacerbating domestic inequalities due to the cost of technology and the rural-urban infrastructure gap. Genuine inclusion demands investment in connectivity infrastructure, teacher training in digital pedagogy, locally relevant content, and policies that treat internet access as the public good the United Nations General Assembly has declared it to be.
Traditional and digital modes working together
It would be a mistake to frame traditional and digital modes of knowledge transfer as opposites, with one destined to replace the other. New educational models based on constructivism can be used in parallel with traditional learning, introducing a blended approach that draws on the strengths of both. The oral tradition of a skilled teacher explaining a concept in a classroom, the written knowledge preserved in a textbook, and the interactive digital resource available on a tablet are not competing – they are complementary. The most effective knowledge transfer environments tend to integrate all three.
What has changed is the scale and speed at which knowledge can travel. A lesson recorded in one country can be watched by a student in another within seconds. A body of traditional knowledge preserved on video can survive the death of the last elder who held it. A reinterpretation of a historical event can be collaboratively produced by scholars on different continents. These possibilities are genuinely new – and they are reshaping the social organization of knowledge in ways that educators and policymakers are still working to fully understand.
