Language is far more than a communication tool – it is the lens through which we perceive, process, and organize knowledge. The Sapir-Whorf hypothesis: language shapes reality
The idea that language influences thought is most closely associated with the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, also called the principle of linguistic relativity. Edward Sapir (1884-1939) and his student Benjamin Lee Whorf (1897-1941) argued that the language we speak shapes how we perceive and experience the world. If the language we speak influences how we think, then the language in which we are taught cannot be a neutral choice. The medium of instruction is not just a delivery vehicle for content – it is a cognitive frame. When children learn in a language they already know well, concepts become accessible, ideas connect, and learning builds on an existing cognitive architecture rather than working against it.
Research from the Global Partnership for Education shows that children educated in their native language are more likely to engage in classroom activities, ask questions, and contribute to discussions – precisely because they already have a rich vocabulary and cultural understanding that allows them to process new information meaningfully. UNESCO analysis further reveals that in upper-middle and high-income countries, children taught in their mother tongue are 14% more likely to read with understanding at the end of primary school compared to those who are not. In some countries, this gap rises to over 60%.
When the medium of instruction is unfamiliar
The consequences of teaching children in a language they do not speak fluently are well documented. A systematic review of language of instruction policies in low- and middle-income countries found that the medium of instruction significantly impacts learning acquisition. Students taught in an unfamiliar language often face difficulties not just with literacy, but with content comprehension across all subjects. Some experience reading and writing skill loss in their mother tongue as well, creating a double deficit. Research broadly concludes that academic outcomes are negatively influenced when the medium of instruction differs from the learner’s mother tongue, particularly in the critical early years.
This is not an argument against multilingualism or second-language learning – quite the opposite. The argument is about sequence and foundation. Researchers argue that success in school depends upon mastery of cognitive and academic language, which develops most naturally in the first language and takes four to seven years of formal instruction to solidify. Skills built in the first language transfer effectively to a second language – but only when that foundation is strong.
Implications for language policy and pedagogy
The link between language and thinking has direct consequences for how education systems make decisions about medium of instruction. Globally, an estimated 40% of learners do not receive education in their mother tongue, creating significant barriers to literacy and academic achievement. In some low- and middle-income countries, this figure rises to 90%. According to the same UNESCO report, only 351 of the world’s languages are currently used as mediums of instruction – a sharp contrast to the roughly 7,000 languages that exist globally.
From a pedagogical standpoint, the Sapir-Whorf framework suggests that teachers need to be aware of more than just what language students speak at home. It draws attention to the fact that conceptual frameworks embedded in different languages differ. A child learning mathematics, science, or history in a second language is not simply translating words – they are navigating between different cognitive and linguistic systems. This is why translanguaging practices, which allow learners to draw on their full linguistic repertoire in the classroom, are gaining recognition as effective pedagogical tools. Rather than treating the home language as an obstacle, these approaches treat it as a resource.
Bilingual and multilingual education as a solution
The most widely supported approach emerging from research is a gradual transition model: using the mother tongue as the primary medium of instruction in early schooling, while progressively introducing a second or official language. Research affirms that mother tongue education enhances literacy, cognitive development, and multilingual transitions. The mother tongue serves as a scaffold – it enables children to think deeply and learn confidently while the second language develops alongside, rather than displacing the first.
English Medium Instruction (EMI) has become widespread in higher education globally, driven by internationalization goals. Research on its effects is mixed. EMI is associated with improved language proficiency and exposure to global perspectives, but also with language barriers and increased cognitive load, especially for students with limited English proficiency. The takeaway is not that EMI is inherently problematic, but that its effectiveness depends heavily on the linguistic preparation students bring with them – which, again, circles back to the quality of early mother tongue education.
Revisiting linguistic relativity: what it means for teachers
The strong version of the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis – that language completely determines thought – has been largely set aside. But the weaker, more nuanced version remains deeply relevant. Language functions not simply as a device for reporting experience, but also as a way of defining experience for its speakers. In classrooms, this means that the language of instruction shapes not just what students learn, but how they learn to think about what they learn.
Teachers who recognize this are better positioned to make informed decisions: about when to use the learner’s home language as a bridge, how to build cognitive academic language progressively, and how to design tasks that respect the linguistic complexity learners are navigating. The relationship between language and thinking is not a theoretical abstraction – it plays out every time a student tries to understand a new concept in an unfamiliar language, or every time a teacher fails to realize why a student who “knows English” still cannot grasp a lesson taught in English.
