A virtual classroom is an online teaching and learning setting where teachers and learners engage via video conferencing and shared digital tools. Virtual environments often level the social dynamics of a classroom. Virtual classroom features facilitate small-group sharing where students who are shy in person can more fully participate. Non-immersive vs. immersive virtual reality in education

As virtual classrooms evolve, they increasingly intersect with virtual reality (VR) technology. Understanding the difference between the two main types of VR – non-immersive and immersive – is important for educators thinking about the future of their classrooms.

Non-immersive virtual reality

A recorded or simulated VR scene played non-immersively appears on a standard display, where the viewing direction is changed manually via a mouse or keyboard on a computer, or by rotating a smartphone or tablet. The viewer has full perception of their real environment but not the impression of being inside the virtual scene. This is essentially what most current virtual classroom platforms offer – a screen-based, interactive digital environment. It is accessible, cost-effective, and requires no special hardware. Research confirms that non-immersive VR emerged as a viable alternative with similar educational benefits to its immersive counterpart, while requiring fewer resources.

Immersive virtual reality

Immersive VR is usually achieved with VR viewers that have a head-mounted display (HMD), where the viewer experiences a panoramic image as if inside the environment – and when tilting the head, the virtual perspective adapts to create a strong illusion of presence. In an educational context, this means a student can walk through ancient Rome, conduct a chemistry experiment in a virtual lab, or practice a surgical procedure – all in a safe, fully simulated environment.

VR is a computer-generated environment that simulates a real or imaginary world – since it is completely immersive, a student could physically be in a classroom while their mind explores Machu Picchu on a virtual field trip. Research from Springer’s Virtual Reality journal found that interactive VR education systems outperformed traditional video-based teaching groups in terms of emotional engagement, sense of presence, and concentration.

Immersive VR also supports inclusive learning. VR and AR can adapt to each student’s needs and learning style, supporting students with different abilities and challenges – with controlled settings helping those who experience heightened stress, and students with movement limitations able to participate fully in virtual activities.

The future of virtual education

The trajectory of virtual classrooms points toward increasingly immersive, intelligent, and interconnected learning environments. Artificial intelligence will play a central role in this shift. AI will power hyper-personalization in learning pathways, enabling dynamic, real-time adjustments based on the needs, interests, and competencies of individual students. Meanwhile, the metaverse in education market, valued at USD 5.4 billion in 2025, is projected to grow to USD 49.3 billion by 2035 – a figure that underscores the scale of investment and confidence in immersive virtual education.

Harvard University’s own research into VR-mediated language learning found that with appropriate pedagogical framing, VR can shift students toward a more nuanced and multifaceted understanding of culture – enabling a depth of experience that traditional media simply cannot replicate. Challenges around equity, access, and the high cost of hardware remain real barriers, particularly in developing regions. UNESCO reported that 43% of students worldwide lack access to high-speed internet, meaning that the promise of immersive virtual education must be paired with serious efforts to close the digital divide.

Still, the direction is clear. Virtual classrooms – from today’s screen-based platforms to tomorrow’s fully immersive VR environments – are not a temporary substitute for physical education. They are a permanent and expanding dimension of how humanity learns.
