How does a classroom environment actually shape the way students learn? The answer depends on which theoretical lens you look through. Over the past century, psychologists and educators have developed rich, distinct perspectives on how the environment interacts with the learner – from the earliest stimulus-response experiments to complex social and cognitive models. Understanding these theoretical foundations is not just academic; it directly informs how teachers design classrooms, plan lessons, and respond to learners. This post walks through six major theoretical perspectives on learning environments and what each one means for education.

Behaviorism: environment as the architect of behavior

Behaviorism is one of the oldest and most influential frameworks for understanding learning. Pioneered by John B. Watson and later extended by B.F. Skinner, it holds that all learning is essentially a change in observable behavior brought about by environmental stimuli. Behaviorists proposed that environmental stimuli and consequences shape behavior, and that learning occurs through a process of conditioning – classical or operant.

In classical conditioning, developed by Ivan Pavlov, a neutral stimulus repeatedly paired with a meaningful one eventually triggers a response on its own. Skinner took this further with operant conditioning, which focuses on reinforcement and punishment. Skinner’s model was based on the premise that satisfying responses are conditioned, while unsatisfying ones are not. In practical classroom terms, this means a teacher who praises correct answers, uses structured reward systems, or removes a burden when a student meets a target is applying behaviorist principles.

Behaviorism’s contribution to learning environments is significant: it gave educators a systematic way to manage and shape behavior through environmental design. However, its core limitation is that it treats the learner as largely passive – a recipient of stimuli – and does not account for what happens inside the mind during learning.

Mediation theory: learning through internal cognitive structures

As behaviorism’s limitations became apparent, theorists began turning their attention inward. Mediation theory, strongly associated with Lev Vygotsky and later elaborated by Reuven Feuerstein, argues that learning is not a direct response to environmental stimuli but is filtered through internal cognitive structures – concepts, mental images, language, and prior experience.

According to this view, learners don’t merely react to the world; they interpret it. Mediated learning is the subtle social interaction between teacher and learner in the enrichment of the student’s learning experience. Feuerstein’s concept of the Mediated Learning Experience (MLE) takes this further: a skilled mediator – a teacher or parent – positions themselves between the learner and environmental stimuli, selecting, highlighting, and interpreting experiences to help the learner build stronger cognitive structures.

A key idea here is that rather than leaving learning to direct exposure, the mediator filters, highlights, and links experiences to wider meanings and future situations. In classroom terms, this looks like scaffolded instruction – temporary support that helps learners reach the next level of understanding, then gradually withdrawn as the learner becomes more independent. Mediation theory fundamentally repositions the teacher from knowledge-provider to cognitive guide, and the learner from passive receiver to active meaning-maker.

The information-processing model: the learner as active processor

Emerging from cognitive psychology in the mid-20th century, the information-processing model describes learning by drawing a parallel between the human mind and a computer. The learner takes in environmental input, processes and organizes it, stores it in memory, and retrieves it when needed. Crucially, the learner is not passive – they attend selectively, make sense of information, and construct understanding.

This model highlights how perception, attention, working memory, and long-term memory all play roles in how environmental stimuli are turned into knowledge. As cognitive psychology emerged, it treated the brain like an information processor, emphasizing concepts like attention, perception, memory, and decision-making.

For educators, the information-processing perspective has practical consequences. It suggests that how information is presented – its organization, sequencing, and clarity – directly affects how well it is encoded and retained. Overloading working memory, presenting disconnected facts without context, or failing to build on prior knowledge can all impede learning. Conversely, structured, well-sequenced instruction that activates prior knowledge and uses repetition aids deeper processing and long-term retention.

Gestalt theory: seeing the whole before the parts

Gestalt theory, developed in early 20th-century Germany by Max Wertheimer, Wolfgang Kรถhler, and Kurt Koffka, challenges both behaviorism and reductionist cognitive approaches. Its central premise is that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts; learning is more than just invoking mechanical responses from learners. The mind naturally organizes perceptions and experiences into complete, meaningful patterns – not isolated fragments.

One of Gestalt theory’s most important contributions to education is the concept of insight learning. Kรถhler demonstrated through experiments with chimpanzees that animals (and by extension, people) can solve problems not through trial and error, but through a sudden cognitive reorganization – a moment of “aha!” where the relationships between elements of a problem become clear. Insightful learning occurs when a learner suddenly understands the relationship between various parts of a problem, leading to its solution.

Gestalt theory also provides several perceptual principles – proximity, similarity, closure, and continuity – that explain how learners naturally group and make sense of information. Understanding how students perceive and organize information helps teachers design more effective instructional materials and learning experiences that reduce cognitive load.

In practice, a Gestalt-informed classroom would present lessons holistically before breaking them into components, encourage students to see the connections between concepts, and use visual organization that aligns with how the brain naturally groups information. Teaching a melody before individual notes, or a historical period before its specific events, reflects this approach.

Discovery learning: Jerome Bruner and the active construction of knowledge

Jerome Bruner (1915-2016) was a Harvard psychologist who profoundly shifted education from passive reception toward active construction of knowledge. His theory of discovery learning holds that learners understand best when they actively uncover the structure of a subject – finding patterns and relationships themselves rather than being told what they are.

Bruner argued that students should discover for themselves the structure of the subject they are studying – finding the connections between facts, concepts, and theories, rather than simply being told what those connections are by the teacher. This positions the learning environment as a space for inquiry, exploration, and problem-solving rather than instruction alone.

Three modes of representation

Bruner identified three stages or modes through which learners build knowledge. The enactive mode involves direct, hands-on manipulation of objects – learning by doing. The iconic mode uses mental images and visual representations. The symbolic mode relies on language, numbers, and abstract systems. Bruner’s learning theory proposes that pupils understand new concepts by progressing through these three modes of representation: enactive (action-based), iconic (image-based), and symbolic (language-based). These are not rigid stages but flexible tools the mind uses to store and work with information.

The spiral curriculum

Bruner also introduced the concept of the spiral curriculum – the idea that complex subjects can be taught at any age if presented in an intellectually appropriate form, and then revisited repeatedly with increasing sophistication. In accordance with this understanding of learning, Bruner proposed the spiral curriculum, a teaching approach in which each subject or skill area is revisited at intervals, at a more sophisticated level each time. This ensures that learning is cumulative and connected rather than fragmented.

For educators, Bruner’s theory means designing environments where students are active problem-solvers, where inquiry is built into lessons, and where scaffolding – temporary structured support – helps learners reach higher levels of understanding before the support is gradually removed.

Bandura’s social learning theory: learning through observation

While Bruner focused on internal discovery, Albert Bandura highlighted a dimension of learning that neither behaviorism nor pure cognitive theory had fully captured: social observation. Albert Bandura’s Social Learning Theory proposes that people learn new behaviors, attitudes, and cognitive processes by observing others within a social context, rather than solely through direct experience.

Bandura agreed with behaviorists that reinforcement matters – but argued that direct reinforcement is far from the only mechanism of learning. Learners also change their behavior by watching others and noting the consequences. This is vicarious reinforcement: watching someone else be rewarded for a behavior can be as powerful as being rewarded yourself. The theory identifies four key components essential for learning through observation: attention, retention, motor reproduction, and motivation. All four must be present for observational learning to result in behavioral change.

Modeling and self-efficacy

A central concept in Bandura’s theory is modeling – learning by observing and imitating the behaviors, attitudes, and emotional reactions of others. Bandura identified three types of models: live models (a person demonstrating the behavior), verbal instruction, and symbolic models (characters in media, books, or online). Bandura’s social learning theory provides a helpful framework for understanding how an individual learns via observation and modeling.

Equally important is the concept of self-efficacy – a learner’s belief in their own ability to succeed at a specific task. Self-efficacy affects how learners achieve, and teachers can use this theory to support positive learner growth. A student who believes they can succeed is more likely to engage, persist, and ultimately learn. Creating classroom environments where positive behaviors are modeled, where students observe peers succeeding, and where self-belief is actively cultivated is the practical application of Bandura’s work.

Bandura later expanded his framework into social cognitive theory, which introduced the important concept of reciprocal determinism: behavior, personal factors, and the environment are all mutually influencing. Just as an individual’s behavior is influenced by the environment, the environment is also influenced by the individual’s behavior. This is a significant departure from earlier models that treated the environment as something that acts on the learner – in Bandura’s framework, learners also act on and shape their environments.

Putting the theories together

These six perspectives are not competing replacements for each other – they are complementary lenses. Behaviorism is highly effective for establishing routines and managing behavior. Mediation theory reminds teachers to be intentional cognitive guides. The information-processing model informs how lessons are sequenced and presented. Gestalt theory pushes educators toward holistic, connected learning. Discovery learning and Bruner’s spiral curriculum support deeper, student-centered understanding. And Bandura’s social learning theory underscores the critical role of the classroom’s social fabric – who is observed, who models what, and how self-belief is nurtured.

No single theory explains everything about how environments shape learning. But taken together, they give educators a powerful toolkit for designing experiences that are structured yet flexible, content-rich yet learner-centered, and individually supportive yet socially vibrant. A classroom built with these theories in mind is one where every design choice – from seating arrangements to feedback timing to how a problem is introduced – is made with an understanding of how learners actually process, construct, and internalize knowledge.
