One who doubts their abilities often disengages before they even begin. This is not just motivational talk – it is grounded in decades of psychological and educational research on self-concept. Understanding what self-concept is, how it develops, and how it influences learning is essential knowledge for educators, parents, and learners themselves.

What is self-concept?
Self-concept refers to the totality of an individual’s thoughts and feelings about themselves as an object of perception. In the words of Rosenberg (1979), self-concept is “the totality of the individual’s thoughts and feelings having reference to himself as an object.” It is not simply about self-confidence; it is a multi-layered mental framework encompassing how you perceive your abilities, your worth, and your identity across different domains of life.
In educational contexts, self-concept is commonly understood through three closely related but distinct components: self-image, self-esteem, and self-efficacy. Together, these three elements shape how a learner approaches tasks, responds to challenges, and interprets success or failure.
Self-image
Self-image is the mental picture a person holds of themselves at any given moment. It includes perceptions about physical characteristics, social roles, and personal qualities. In children, self-image starts out as concrete and descriptive – “I am tall,” “I have a dog” – but gradually becomes more abstract and psychological as they mature. According to developmental research, by middle childhood, children begin describing themselves using internal traits such as “I am kind” or “I am good at maths,” rather than purely physical terms.
Self-esteem
Self-esteem goes a step further – it is the evaluative dimension of self-concept. It is not just what you think about yourself, but how you feel about what you think. Self-esteem is the value you assign to yourself – a judgment of your own worth as a person. It can be global (a general sense of self-worth) or domain-specific (how you feel about yourself as a student, an athlete, or a friend). In learning contexts, self-esteem influences a learner’s willingness to attempt new challenges, ask for help, and persist in the face of difficulty.
Self-efficacy
Self-efficacy, a concept introduced by psychologist Albert Bandura in 1977, refers specifically to a person’s belief in their ability to perform a particular task or succeed in a specific situation. It is more task-focused than either self-image or self-esteem. A student might have high self-esteem overall but low self-efficacy for a specific subject like mathematics. Self-efficacy is shaped through direct experiences of success, observing others, receiving encouragement, and managing emotional responses. It is a strong predictor of whether learners will initiate a task, how much effort they will invest, and how long they will persist when things get hard.
How self-concept develops across life stages
Self-concept is not fixed at birth – it is shaped progressively through experience, relationships, and social interaction. Its development follows a fairly consistent trajectory across childhood and adolescence, becoming increasingly complex and nuanced with age.
Infancy and early childhood
Self-concept begins forming in the earliest months of life. Infants start by recognising themselves as separate beings from their caregivers, typically between six and nine months. By around 18 months, children demonstrate self-recognition. Between the ages of 3 and 5, children begin to think about themselves in specific, concrete terms – describing their age, their possessions, and simple emotions. At this stage, self-descriptions are purely descriptive, not judgmental.
Middle childhood (approximately ages 7-11)
This is a critical phase for self-concept development. Children shift from thinking in concrete terms to more abstract qualities, and begin to incorporate personality traits, hobbies, and academic abilities into their self-descriptions. Social comparison becomes important – children start evaluating themselves relative to peers. According to Erikson’s framework, middle childhood is characterised by the conviction “I am what I learn,” making it a pivotal period for forming an academic self-concept. Children who receive recognition for their achievements tend to develop a stronger, more positive sense of themselves as learners, while those who face repeated failure or negative labelling risk developing a sense of inferiority that can affect their engagement with education for years.
Adolescence
Adolescence is where self-concept becomes most complex. Adolescents experiment with identity, compare themselves to others, and develop the basis of a self-concept that may stay with them for the rest of their lives. They are more conscious of social approval, and peer relationships play a larger role in shaping how they see themselves. Harter (2012) found that adolescents emphasise traits such as being friendly and considerate more than do children, reflecting a growing concern about how others perceive them. Adolescents also begin to conceptualise “possible selves” – future identities they aspire to or wish to avoid – which directly shapes their educational goals and motivation. According to neuroscientific research, developing a stable and clearly defined self-concept during adolescence is predictive of educational and occupational success later in life.
Self-concept and its influence on learning
The relationship between self-concept and learning outcomes is well-established in educational psychology. Self-concept influences learning in several interconnected ways: it shapes motivation, determines the difficulty of goals a learner sets, affects how they respond to feedback, and mediates their persistence through academic challenges.
Self-concept and motivation
Learners with a positive academic self-concept are more intrinsically motivated. They are more likely to engage with learning for its own sake, set challenging but achievable goals, and attribute their successes to their own effort and ability. Research suggests that self-concept is perhaps the basis for all motivated behaviour – it gives rise to “possible selves,” and it is possible selves that create the motivation for learning. Conversely, when learners hold a negative self-concept, they are more likely to avoid challenging tasks, interpret setbacks as confirmation of their inadequacy, and disengage from learning altogether.
Academic self-concept and achievement: a reciprocal relationship
One of the most significant findings in educational research is that self-concept and academic achievement are mutually reinforcing. Research examining the Reciprocal Effects Model (REM) shows that prior academic self-concept has direct and indirect effects on subsequent achievement, and that increases in academic self-concept lead to increases in future academic performance. In other words, the relationship flows both ways: performing well improves how students see themselves, and seeing themselves positively improves how they perform.
This reciprocal dynamic has important implications for teachers. It means that boosting a student’s academic self-concept – through meaningful feedback, achievable challenges, and recognition of progress – can create an upward spiral of improved performance and greater confidence.
Domain-specific self-concept matters more than global self-concept
Not all dimensions of self-concept affect learning equally. Domain-specific self-concept, such as mathematics self-concept, is more strongly related to academic performance in the related subject than global self-concept (such as a general sense of “I feel good about myself”). A student’s belief about their ability in a specific subject area is a far stronger predictor of their performance in that subject than their overall self-esteem. This means educators should pay attention to subject-specific confidence, not just general student wellbeing.
Self-concept and learning aspirations
When students have a more positive self-concept, they tend to do better in school – and this is particularly pronounced for students with learning difficulties. Inclusive teaching environments that address both academic and emotional dimensions of learning have been shown to lift self-concept and performance together. A slight rise in academic self-concept is observed with each increase in academic achievement, creating a compounding effect over time. Students who see themselves as capable learners set higher aspirations for themselves, persist longer through difficulty, and ultimately reach higher levels of educational attainment.
Role of teachers and environment in shaping self-concept
Teachers are among the most influential shapers of student self-concept. The feedback they provide, the expectations they hold, and the classroom climate they create all send powerful signals to students about their worth and capability as learners. Positive, consistent, and supportive relationships between adults and children are at the heart of developing a healthy sense of self.
Specific classroom practices that nurture positive self-concept include providing mastery experiences – tasks that are sufficiently challenging to be meaningful but achievable enough to foster success. Bandura argued that the most useful efficacy judgments are those that slightly exceed one’s actual capabilities, as this modest stretch can increase effort and persistence. Teachers who deliver constructive, specific, and timely feedback – rather than vague praise – help students build an accurate and positive academic self-concept grounded in real accomplishment.
Peer relationships and family environments also matter. In collectivist cultures, a child’s self-concept may be more communally oriented, tied to family and group identity, while in more individualistic settings, personal achievement and social comparison play a larger role. Understanding these cultural influences helps educators support diverse learners more effectively.
Building positive self-concept: practical implications
The good news is that self-concept is not fixed. Components of self-concept such as self-efficacy and self-esteem are not fixed but are influenced by the environment and experiences – they can be changed and developed over time. This is empowering for both educators and learners. Some evidence-based strategies to support positive academic self-concept include creating frequent opportunities for learners to experience genuine success, building mastery progressively, offering specific and accurate positive feedback, using inclusive teaching methods that support all learners, and promoting a growth mindset that frames ability as something that develops through effort.
Research suggests that intervention programmes targeting self-concept can improve academic outcomes, particularly for students who are underperforming. The key is that such programmes address both the cognitive and emotional dimensions of self-perception – helping students not just understand their abilities better, but feel more positively and accurately about who they are as learners.
