Think about the last time a child completely lost track of time while building something, drawing, or exploring an insect in the garden. There was no need to remind them to focus – their attention was effortless and sustained. This is not accidental. It is the direct result of interest. Research in educational psychology has consistently shown that when children are genuinely interested in what they are doing, their attention sharpens, their engagement deepens, and their learning improves. Understanding how interest drives attention – and how teachers and caregivers can harness it – is one of the most practical and evidence-backed approaches to supporting children’s learning.

Why interest drives attention

Interest is far more than just liking something. According to research published in the journal Policy Insights from the Behavioral and Brain Sciences, interest is both a psychological state of heightened attention and affect toward a particular topic, and an enduring predisposition to return to it over time. In other words, interest operates on two levels: a brief spark triggered by novelty or a compelling situation, and a deeper, more stable engagement that develops with experience and knowledge.

When a child is in a state of interest, something important happens cognitively: affective reactions, perceived value, and cognitive functioning all come together, making attention and learning feel almost effortless. The child is not fighting to concentrate – they are pulled toward the material naturally. This stands in sharp contrast to learning tasks that feel irrelevant or disconnected, where maintaining focus requires constant effort and often fails.

Educational researchers distinguish between two types of interest that are critical in classroom settings. Situational interest is a short-term state triggered by something in the environment – an unusual demonstration, a surprising fact, or an exciting story. Individual interest, on the other hand, is a stable, long-term disposition a child develops over time through repeated positive engagement with a topic. Situational interest is a transient emotional state induced by a specific stimulus, task activity, or novel features of an object, while individual interest is a stable psychological tendency built over time through prior knowledge and personal values. Both matter – situational interest is the entry point, and with the right support, it grows into the sustained individual interest that powers deep learning.

Curiosity and interest are closely related but not the same thing. Curiosity attracts children to something in the moment, while interest represents a more enduring state of attention – it is this shift from curiosity to sustained engagement that significantly impacts cognitive development and academic success. A child may be curious about a frog they see in the garden, but a child who has developed a genuine interest in amphibians will seek out more information, ask deeper questions, and remember what they learn far more reliably.

The emotional dimension of interest is just as important as the cognitive one. When a child makes an emotional connection with a topic, it can ignite enthusiasm and drive active engagement – and research confirms that connecting learning with a child’s emotions is an effective way to enhance attention, because emotions profoundly affect how information is processed. This means that a lesson which resonates emotionally – through storytelling, role-play, or real-world application – is far more likely to hold a child’s attention than one that delivers information in an emotionally neutral way.

From a neurological standpoint, sustained attention – commonly understood as concentration or focus – is the ability to continuously maintain focus on goal-directed activity over time, and it underpins more complex cognitive processes including memory and learning. Interest, by making a task inherently rewarding, reduces the mental effort required to maintain this sustained attention. Children attending to something they find interesting are effectively in a state where their brains are working optimally.

How to foster interest in learning

Knowing that interest boosts attention is only useful if educators and parents can actively build it. The good news is that interest is not a fixed trait – it can be stimulated, nurtured, and developed through deliberate teaching choices.

Personalized learning approaches

One of the most effective strategies for building interest is connecting school content to what children already care about. Personalized education uses a child’s individual interests, values, and preferences to increase engagement with school subjects – an idea that traces back to the philosopher John Dewey, who argued over a century ago for bridging children’s lives outside school with the materials they encounter inside it.

Personalized learning is a tailored system where instructional approaches, learning objectives, and content are based on the individual child’s needs, with activities designed to be meaningful, relevant, and driven by their interests. In practice, this can range from choosing topics for writing assignments based on a child’s hobby, to framing a maths problem around a favourite sport. The goal is not to remove structure, but to create a bridge between the curriculum and the child’s world.

Experimental studies have found that personalized education increases situational interest in the short term, which is essential for promoting individual interest over the long term. Crucially, this effect is especially strong for children who have low initial interest or low performance expectations – making personalization a particularly powerful tool for children who are otherwise disengaged.

Teachers do not need to overhaul their entire curriculum to personalize learning. Small but meaningful adjustments – using a child’s name in a maths problem, incorporating their interest in animals into a science lesson, or letting them choose a project topic within defined boundaries – can make a significant difference. As personalized learning gives students a voice in their education, it builds self-advocacy skills and encourages them to become active participants in their own learning journey.

Using the four-phase model of interest development

A practical framework for building interest over time is the four-phase model developed by researchers Hidi and Renninger. It describes how interest grows from an initial spark into a deep, stable engagement. The first phase involves triggering situational interest – capturing attention through novelty, surprise, or relevance. The second phase sustains that interest through enjoyment or a sense of value. The third and fourth phases mark the emergence and development of individual interest, where a child begins to seek out and reengage with the topic on their own.

For teachers, interest-enhancing interventions to promote the first two phases include attention-getting settings, tasks connected to prior individual interest, problem-based learning, and helping students understand the personal relevance of what they are learning. Each of these approaches gives children a reason to pay attention before asking them to sustain focus – a critical distinction in working with young learners.

It is also worth noting that children’s individual interests show continuity over time and actively shape how they engage with and learn from their environment. A child’s early interests are not random – they are reliable signals of where genuine learning energy exists, and teachers who recognise and build on these signals are working with the child’s natural motivation rather than against it.

Timing and environment: the right conditions for peak concentration

Even the most interested child cannot concentrate effectively in the wrong conditions. Interest sets the motivation, but the physical and temporal environment determines whether that motivation can actually be directed into focused learning.

The role of the physical environment

Classroom design has a measurable impact on how well children can focus. Research has shown that children in highly decorated classrooms are more distracted, spend more time off-task, and demonstrate smaller learning gains compared to those in less visually cluttered spaces. This is particularly relevant in early childhood classrooms, where the instinct to create rich, colourful environments can sometimes work against the very learning it is meant to support.

Sound is another major factor. The brain systems that help children filter out distractions and maintain focus are still developing, making children especially vulnerable to noise. Noisy environments have been shown to negatively impact reading, writing, comprehension, and overall academic performance. Ensuring a reasonably quiet learning environment is one of the most straightforward adjustments a teacher or parent can make.

Temperature and light also play a role. Studies have identified an ideal thermal range for optimal learning – roughly between 20ยฐC and 23ยฐC – and adequate natural light supports alertness and cognitive performance. These physical conditions are not always within a teacher’s control, but being aware of them helps in making the most of available resources.

Structure, routine, and timing

Beyond the physical space, how a child’s day is structured significantly affects their ability to concentrate. Predictable schedules and routines create a sense of safety and security, allowing children to direct their attention toward tasks rather than wondering what comes next. When children know what to expect, they can settle into focused work more quickly and sustain it for longer.

It is equally important to match task demands to a child’s natural attention capacity. Concentration is not innate – it develops gradually over time, building first in shorter durations and extending as children grow and practice. Expecting a young child to focus for extended periods without breaks is counterproductive. Short, purposeful sessions aligned with a child’s developmental stage – combined with regular movement and rest breaks – are far more effective than long, unbroken work periods.

Physical activity, in particular, has a direct impact on a child’s ability to concentrate. Physical activity is among the most effective interventions for enhancing sustained attention in children, primarily through physiological arousal and its effect on cognitive control. Brief movement breaks between learning tasks can meaningfully reset a child’s capacity for focused engagement.

The social and emotional environment

Interest does not develop in isolation – it is shaped by relationships and the emotional tone of the learning environment. Parents and teachers subtly influence children’s interest development through the topics they discuss, the materials they provide, and the sense of structure and predictability they create at home and in the classroom. When children feel safe, respected, and seen, they are far more willing to take the cognitive risks that genuine learning requires.

Positive attention from adults reinforces interest-driven behaviour. When adults show genuine interest in what a child is engaged with – joining their activity, asking questions, and offering labelled praise – children learn that their interests matter and that engagement brings positive responses. Over time, this strengthens the motivational foundation for sustained learning.

The relationship between interest, attention, and learning is not a theoretical abstraction – it plays out in classrooms and homes every single day. A child who is interested in what they are learning is a child who is paying attention. And a child who is paying attention is a child who is learning. By building on children’s genuine interests, personalising instruction where possible, and creating environments that support rather than undermine concentration, educators and parents can move from managing attention problems to preventing them.
