Every time a child figures out a new math problem, learns to say “please” without being reminded, or masters riding a bicycle, something fundamental has taken place: learning. Yet learning is far more than memorizing facts or following instructions. It is a complex, ongoing process that changes who we are – how we think, behave, and respond to the world around us. Understanding the nature of learning helps educators, parents, and learners themselves make better sense of how knowledge and skills are genuinely built over time.

Learning as a process of change
At its core, learning is defined as a relatively permanent change in behavior, knowledge, or skills that results from experience. This definition, widely cited across educational psychology, contains three important ideas worth unpacking.
First, the change must be relatively permanent. If a student crams for a test and forgets everything by the following week, that is not considered genuine learning – the knowledge was never encoded into long-term memory. True learning produces changes that last considerably longer than momentary awareness.
Second, the change must come from experience, not biology. A child growing taller, or a teenager’s voice deepening during puberty, are changes driven by maturation – not learning. Similarly, if medication temporarily improves a student’s concentration, that is a pharmacological effect, not a learning outcome. Learning occurs through ongoing interactions with the environment, whether through formal instruction, personal practice, observation, or trial and error.
Third, the change manifests in behavior or knowledge. Sometimes we can observe the result directly – a child who now ties their own shoelaces. Other times, the change is internal, such as understanding why a historical event occurred. Both types of learning are valuable and often interconnected – new knowledge frequently leads to behavioral changes, and practicing new behaviors can deepen understanding.
This definition distinguishes learning from instincts and reflexes, which are innate behaviors we are born with. A baby does not learn to cry when hungry; it is an automatic response. But a child learning to ask politely for food is a product of experience – and that is learning.
Examples of learning in daily life
Learning does not only happen in classrooms. It is woven into every stage of a child’s day, and it takes many different forms.
Cognitive learning: building knowledge
When a child works through multiplication tables or understands why plants need sunlight, they are engaged in cognitive learning – the internal processing and reorganization of information. According to cognitive learning theory, the learner actively processes incoming information, connects it to what they already know, and stores new understanding in memory. A change in behavior is observed, but it signals something deeper – a change in what the learner knows and understands.
Social and observational learning
Children also learn extensively by watching others. A young child who observes an older sibling sharing toys begins to mirror that behavior. This is observational learning, which depends on cognitive factors including attention, retention, and motivation. Individuals acquire new behaviors by watching others, without needing direct instruction or personal trial and error.
Emotional and social habits
Learning also shapes social habits and emotional responses. A child who is consistently greeted warmly by their teacher may develop a positive association with school. One who faces repeated criticism without encouragement may grow anxious about participating in class. These emotional patterns, formed through repeated experiences, are also a product of learning – and they can have lasting effects on a child’s engagement with education.
Human learning begins at birth and continues until death as a consequence of ongoing interactions between people and their environment. From learning to walk, to developing a sense of fairness, to acquiring professional skills in adulthood, the process never really stops.
The role of practice and reinforcement
Learning rarely happens in a single moment. Most skills and knowledge are built gradually through repeated practice and reinforcement – two factors that are central to solidifying what has been learned.
Why practice matters
When a learner first encounters a new skill – say, reading aloud or solving long division – the process demands conscious effort at every step. With practice, individual actions become more fluid and eventually automatic. Consider learning to drive: at first, coordinating the steering wheel, mirrors, pedals, and road conditions is overwhelming. Through repeated practice and experience, these separate actions become integrated into smooth, automatic behaviors. This progression from effortful to automatic is a hallmark of genuine learning. The research on deliberate practice and expertise acquisition consistently shows that moving from beginner to skilled performance requires sustained, purposeful repetition over time.
How reinforcement strengthens learning
Reinforcement refers to any consequence that increases the likelihood a behavior will be repeated. In educational settings, it is one of the most powerful tools available for shaping learning. Positive and negative reinforcement, whether natural consequences or implemented by another person, are effective tools for learning and behavior modification.
Positive reinforcement has a constructive impact on students’ behavior, commitment, and self-perception. When a child receives praise for reading a paragraph aloud correctly, or earns a sticker for completing homework, that acknowledgment signals that the behavior was valuable – and the child is more likely to repeat it. In educational settings, a teacher who praises students immediately after they answer questions correctly reinforces their participation and encourages them to engage more frequently.
Reinforcement does not always have to be a tangible reward. Encouragement, a nod of approval, or the simple satisfaction of getting an answer right can serve as powerful internal reinforcers. Children who receive consistent positive reinforcement are more likely to develop enhanced self-esteem and confidence, which in turn supports greater engagement with learning tasks.
It is also worth noting that the ability to learn and modify behaviors based on the positive and negative outcomes of actions is an important skill used throughout the lifespan – and one that is especially significant in the early years of childhood development.
Stimulus-response association in learning
One of the most foundational concepts in understanding how learning works is the idea of stimulus-response (S-R) association – the connection between something in the environment (a stimulus) and a learner’s reaction to it (a response). This is the backbone of behavioral learning theory, developed through the work of Ivan Pavlov and B.F. Skinner.
Classical conditioning: learning by association
Classical conditioning was first discovered by Russian physiologist Ivan Pavlov in the early 1900s while he was studying digestion in dogs. He noticed that his dogs began to salivate not just at the sight of food, but at the sound of the footsteps of the assistant who fed them. This was a learned response – an association had formed between a neutral stimulus and an anticipated outcome.
In Pavlov’s controlled experiments, he repeatedly paired the sound of a bell with the presentation of food. Over time, the dogs began to salivate at the sound of the bell alone, even without food being present. Once this association was formed, the bell alone triggered salivation – now called the conditioned response. The organism had learned to anticipate one event based on another.
This principle is directly relevant in classrooms. A child who repeatedly experiences anxiety during math activities may develop a conditioned fear response toward math materials through classical conditioning processes. Conversely, a classroom environment consistently associated with warmth, safety, and encouragement can generate positive emotional responses that support learning.
Operant conditioning: learning through consequences
While classical conditioning deals with involuntary, automatic responses, operant conditioning – developed by B.F. Skinner – focuses on voluntary behaviors shaped by their consequences. The core principle is straightforward: behaviors that produce rewarding outcomes are more likely to be repeated, while those that produce negative outcomes are less likely to continue.
Operant conditioning addresses voluntary, deliberate actions – speaking, writing, participating in group work, completing assignments – whose voluntary nature means they can be readily influenced by their consequences. A student who raises their hand and receives acknowledgment from the teacher is more likely to participate again. A child who helps a classmate and is praised for it gradually internalizes cooperation as a valued behavior.
Operant conditioning involves a two-way process: action (or behavior) operates on the environment while the environment at the same time shapes behavior. This reciprocal relationship is what makes it such a powerful framework for understanding how children’s behavior develops in educational settings.
S-R associations in everyday classroom learning
Stimulus-response associations are at work in classrooms every day, even when teachers and students are unaware of them. The ringing of a school bell (stimulus) that prompts students to pack their bags (response) is a conditioned association. A teacher’s specific tone of voice that signals “it’s time to focus” and shifts student attention is another. Behavioral learning theory focuses on observed actions, the conditions under which they are performed, and the reinforcement of desired behaviors – making it a practical framework for anyone working with children in structured learning environments.
Understanding stimulus-response associations also helps educators avoid unintentional conditioning. If a teaching style consistently produces stress in students, the subject itself can become a conditioned source of anxiety. Being deliberate about the associations children form in the learning environment is part of effective, informed teaching practice.
Putting it all together
The nature of learning is not a single, simple phenomenon. It is a process of relatively permanent change, driven by experience, shaped through practice, reinforced by feedback, and built upon the associations learners form between stimuli and responses. Whether a child is mastering fractions, learning to resolve a conflict with a classmate, or developing the habit of reading before bed, the same fundamental mechanisms are at work. For educators and caregivers, understanding these mechanisms is not just academic – it directly informs how we design learning experiences, respond to learner behavior, and create environments where meaningful change can take place.
