Watch a child in a busy classroom and you’ll notice something remarkable: they are rarely doing just one thing at a time. They listen to the teacher, glance at the board, jot down notes, and occasionally keep an eye on what a classmate is doing – all within the same few minutes. This ability to handle more than one source of information at the same time is called multiple attention, or divided attention. It is one of the most complex cognitive skills a child develops, and understanding how it emerges can fundamentally change how educators and parents support children’s learning.

What is multiple attention?

Divided attention – also referred to as multiple attention – is the brain’s ability to process two or more streams of information at the same time and respond to the multiple demands of the environment. It is different from simply switching back and forth between tasks. When a child genuinely divides attention, both tasks receive cognitive resources simultaneously. This makes it the most demanding type of attention, distinct from selective attention (focusing on one thing while blocking out others) and sustained attention (staying on task over time). In everyday learning, all three types interact constantly, but divided attention is directly tied to a child’s ability to function in multi-demand environments – which is exactly what classrooms, playgrounds, and homes are.

The need for divided attention: real-life situations requiring multitasking

Children encounter demands for divided attention far more often than we tend to recognise. Consider a typical school morning. A student sits in class and must listen to the teacher explaining a concept while simultaneously copying notes from the board. These two tasks draw on the same cognitive resources – language processing and motor coordination – at exactly the same time. Research confirms that in classroom settings, listening and learning are routinely combined with other tasks such as taking notes, making this a genuine everyday challenge rather than an exception.

Outside the classroom, the demands are just as real. A child crossing the road must watch for oncoming vehicles while listening for a parent’s instruction. At the dinner table, a child follows a conversation while also eating. During a sports match, a player tracks the ball’s movement while staying aware of teammates’ positions. Divided attention is critical in academic settings precisely because it enables children to understand what the teacher is saying while reading the board and taking notes at the same time – three tasks that routinely occur together.

The challenge is real. When people divide their attention, the efficiency with which they carry out each task decreases, and errors are more likely. This is not a failure of effort – it reflects the brain’s finite processing capacity. For children, whose attentional systems are still maturing, this challenge is especially pronounced.

Case study: Riyaz manages multiple activities

Consider Riyaz, a nine-year-old in a busy fourth-grade classroom. During a science lesson, his teacher gives verbal instructions for a hands-on experiment while writing the steps on the board. Riyaz must listen to his teacher’s explanation, read the board, and simultaneously gather his materials from his desk. For many children his age, this combination is manageable – but only because Riyaz has been doing similar tasks for years.

At home, Riyaz sets the table for dinner while his mother calls out which dishes to use from the kitchen. He monitors her instructions with one part of his attention while physically completing the motor task with another. Later, while doing homework, he mentally tracks where he is in a maths problem while listening for his name being called. None of this is accidental. Each of these situations has trained his brain to allocate attentional resources across multiple channels.

Riyaz’s success is not unique – but it does reflect consistent practice and a developmental readiness that has built up over years. If he had been asked to perform the same multi-demand tasks at age four, the outcome would have looked very different. And that difference is entirely explained by how divided attention matures across childhood.

How multiple attention develops: the developmental story

The development of divided attention follows a clear but gradual trajectory. Children aged three to four have considerable difficulty dividing their attention between two tasks, often unable to hold two simultaneous demands in mind. By age five, children begin to manage simple dual-task situations, though they still perform well below school-age children and adults. The real growth happens across the primary school years.

A cross-sectional study of 199 children aged six to twelve found that the ability to divide attention among several stimuli improves dramatically across the school-age years, more steeply than either selective or sustained attention. This means that the years between ages six and twelve are a particularly important window for building multiple attention skills. The same study found that tasks requiring children to divide attention among several visual information sources considerably hampered their performance – particularly for children in early primary school.

The brain region central to this development is the prefrontal cortex – the part of the brain responsible for planning, impulse control, and regulating attention. This area continues developing through adolescence, which is why teenagers can still struggle with distraction and impulse control. It is not a character flaw; it is a biological reality tied to brain maturation. As the frontal lobe matures, children become better at suppressing irrelevant information and allocating cognitive resources across competing demands.

The role of practice and automaticity

One key mechanism that makes multiple attention possible is automaticity – when a skill becomes so well-practised that it requires little conscious thought. With extensive practice, skills that once demanded full conscious attention no longer do, freeing up cognitive capacity for a second task. This is why an experienced reader can follow a conversation while reading, but a child just learning to read cannot. The act of decoding letters still demands too much of the beginning reader’s attention.

Riyaz can set the table while listening to his mother because both skills – spatial navigation of his home and following simple oral instructions – are well-practised. Neither requires the full beam of his attention. The same principle applies in the classroom: a child who has automated handwriting can more easily attend to the content of what they are writing, rather than the mechanics of forming letters.

Everyday examples of multiple attention developing naturally

Children build divided attention through the fabric of daily life, often without anyone labelling it as cognitive training. Here are some clear, recognisable examples of this development in action.

Walking and talking

A toddler who is just learning to walk has to devote nearly all of their attention to the physical task of putting one foot in front of the other. By the time that same child is seven or eight, they walk and hold a conversation without any conscious effort. The motor task has become automatic, freeing attention for language processing simultaneously.

Listening while doing

An important milestone in attention development is when a child can focus on an activity and simultaneously listen to what is being said, without having to stop their activity. Before this stage, a child must fully stop what they are doing to listen. After it, they can hold a conversation or follow instructions while keeping their hands engaged with a task. Parents and teachers often notice this shift around ages five to six.

Sports and games

Team sports are among the richest environments for building multiple attention. A child playing football must track the ball, monitor the positions of teammates and opponents, listen for the coach’s instructions, and make rapid decisions – all concurrently. Divided attention can require practice, and dual-action games that combine physical movement with a cognitive task are particularly effective at building this capacity. Games like Simon Says, where a child must listen for specific wording while simultaneously deciding whether to move, train exactly these split-attention skills.

Classroom note-taking

Perhaps the most academically consequential form of multiple attention for school-age children is the combination of listening and writing simultaneously. Around 70% of classroom time is spent either listening to a teacher or communicating with peers, meaning that the ability to divide attention between auditory input and written output is not a bonus skill – it is a daily requirement. Children who have not yet developed this capacity will consistently fall behind, not because they lack intelligence, but because their attentional system has not yet matured to handle the dual demand.

What teachers and parents can do

Understanding the developmental nature of multiple attention has direct practical implications. It is more effective to first help children develop alternating attention – switching between tasks – before introducing true divided attention tasks. Once a child can fluidly shift between activities, handling both simultaneously becomes a more achievable next step.

When the cognitive and perceptual requirements of tasks are developmentally appropriate and practice is permitted, multitasking strategies can result in enhanced visual, perceptual skills, and knowledge acquisition. The key phrase here is “developmentally appropriate.” Pushing a five-year-old to take notes while listening is likely to overwhelm, not train. Giving a ten-year-old structured opportunities to do both, gradually and with support, builds genuine capacity.

Attention is also enhanced when the content is personally relevant to the child – a useful reminder that engagement and attentional load are connected. A child deeply interested in what they are doing will naturally sustain and divide attention more effectively than a child performing a task they find meaningless.

Multiple attention and learning outcomes

The link between divided attention and academic success is well established. Divided attention is an important factor in the academic setting, and children with attention difficulties – such as those with ADHD – often perform poorly in school partly because of struggles with managing multiple simultaneous demands. However, it is important to note that difficulty with divided attention exists on a spectrum. Many children without any diagnosed condition struggle with it at certain stages of development and in certain demanding environments.

Sustained attention forms the foundation on which divided and selective attention are built. A child who cannot yet maintain focus on a single task will almost certainly struggle to divide that focus across two. This means that building sustained attention first – through consistent routines, structured tasks, and reducing unnecessary distractions – creates the foundation for multiple attention to develop naturally on top of it.

What Riyaz demonstrates in that busy classroom is not exceptional ability. It is the outcome of years of brain development, consistent everyday practice, and exposure to the kind of structured multi-demand situations that build attentional capacity incrementally. Every child is on this journey; they are simply at different points along it.
