How do children learn to ride a bicycle, solve a math problem, or speak a new language? Is it purely about reward and punishment, or is there something deeper happening inside the mind? These questions have driven educators and psychologists to develop theories of learning – frameworks that explain how knowledge is acquired, retained, and applied. Understanding these theories is not just an academic exercise; it directly shapes how teachers teach, how classrooms are designed, and how children grow into capable learners.

What is learning, really?

Before exploring theories, it helps to pin down what learning actually means. In psychology and education, learning is defined as a relatively permanent change in behavior or knowledge that results from experience. The word “relatively permanent” is important here – a change caused by fatigue, illness, or a momentary mood does not count as learning. For a change to qualify, it must endure over time and be traceable to some form of experience.

This definition also tells us what learning is not. Reflexes and instincts – like a newborn’s sucking reflex – are inborn and do not involve experience. Learning, by contrast, is acquired. A person is said to have learned something when they consistently exhibit a new behavior over time. This consistency is what distinguishes genuine learning from temporary reactions to a situation.

It is also worth noting that learning is not always positive. Someone can learn a bad habit, develop a prejudice, or become conditioned to fear something. The nature of what is learned depends heavily on the kinds of experiences a person encounters – which is precisely why learning theories matter so much to educators.

Two major perspectives on learning

Over the past century, two broad perspectives have dominated the study of learning: behaviorism and cognitive theory. These perspectives agree on one fundamental point – that learning stems from real-world experiences. Where they differ is in what they consider worth studying and explaining.

The behaviorist perspective

Behaviorism emerged early in the 20th century and became a major force in American psychology. Its core position is straightforward: learning is achieved when a provided stimulus changes behavior. Behaviorists argued that science should only deal with what can be directly observed and measured. Mental processes – thoughts, feelings, inner motivations – were considered too invisible and unreliable for scientific study.

In practical terms, this meant that behaviorists studied learning by looking at what goes in (stimuli from the environment) and what comes out (behavioral responses). If a student answered correctly after being praised, that was evidence of learning. If the student stopped misbehaving after a consequence, that too was learning. The inner workings of the mind were largely set aside.

This perspective had enormous influence on classroom practice for much of the 20th century, and its legacy remains visible today in techniques like positive reinforcement, reward systems, and structured repetition.

The cognitive perspective

Cognitive theories, which grew prominent from the mid-20th century onward, pushed back against the behaviorist view. Cognitivism emerged because behaviorism couldn’t fully explain complex learning like language acquisition or problem-solving. Cognitive theorists argued that you simply cannot understand learning without examining what happens inside the mind.

Where behaviorism sees learners as passive responders to environmental stimuli, cognitivism sees them as active processors of information. Rather than a blank slate being shaped by external forces, the learner is understood as someone who perceives, interprets, remembers, and makes meaning from experiences. A student who solves a novel problem is not just retrieving a conditioned response – they are drawing on mental schemas, prior knowledge, and reasoning strategies.

Both perspectives, despite their differences, acknowledge that experience is essential. A behaviorist focuses on the environmental conditions that produce behavioral change. A cognitive theorist asks how the learner is internally constructing meaning from those same conditions. Together, they offer a richer picture of how learning works.

Key theorists and their contributions

Four figures stand out as foundational to our understanding of learning: Ivan Pavlov, B.F. Skinner, Jean Piaget, and Lev Vygotsky. Each contributed a distinct lens through which we can view how learning occurs.

Ivan Pavlov and classical conditioning

Ivan Pavlov (1849-1936) was a Russian physiologist, not a psychologist, and his discovery of classical conditioning came almost by accident. While recording salivation in laboratory dogs, he noticed that the dogs began to salivate before the food arrived – simply because they had learned to associate his footsteps with feeding time.

Pavlov formalized this observation into a theory. He began ringing a bell just before presenting food to the dogs. After repeated pairings, the bell alone was enough to trigger salivation. His work on conditioned learning provided support for the notion that learning and behavior were controlled by events in the environment.

In classrooms, classical conditioning helps explain emotional responses to learning. A student who experienced repeated failure or embarrassment in mathematics may develop anxiety at the sight of a math worksheet – not because the worksheet is threatening, but because it has become associated with past distress. Teachers who create warm, supportive classroom environments are, in part, working against such negative conditioning.

B.F. Skinner and operant conditioning

B.F. Skinner (1904-1990) extended behaviorist ideas with his theory of operant conditioning. Where Pavlov focused on involuntary, reflexive responses, Skinner was interested in voluntary behavior – the actions people and animals choose to take. According to Skinner, rewards increase the likelihood that behaviors will be repeated, while punishments decrease the likelihood of repetition.

Skinner’s key insight was that the consequences of a behavior determine whether it persists. Through research on animals, he concluded that both animals and humans would repeat acts that led to favorable outcomes, and suppress those that produced unfavorable results.

This principle translates directly into teaching. When a teacher praises a student for contributing an answer in class, that positive reinforcement increases the probability of the student participating again. When a student loses a privilege for repeated disruption, the consequence is intended to reduce that behavior. Skinner’s framework remains the foundation of many behavior management systems used in schools today.

Jean Piaget and cognitive development

Jean Piaget (1896-1980) shifted the focus from external behavior to internal mental development. He was one of the first to recognize and map out the ways in which children’s intelligence differs from that of adults. His curiosity was sparked when he noticed consistent patterns in the wrong answers children gave on intelligence tests – suggesting that children were not simply less knowledgeable than adults, but that they thought in qualitatively different ways.

Piaget proposed that children pass through four stages of cognitive development: the sensorimotor stage (birth to approximately 2 years), the preoperational stage (2 to 7 years), the concrete operational stage (7 to 11 years), and the formal operational stage (adolescence onward). These stages cannot be skipped; intellectual development always follows this sequence.

A critical concept in Piaget’s theory is cognitive equilibrium – the balance between what a child already knows and what they encounter in the world. When new information fits existing knowledge, the child assimilates it smoothly. When it does not fit, the child must accommodate by adjusting their mental schemas. This cycle of assimilation and accommodation is the engine of cognitive growth.

For teachers, Piaget’s work carries a clear implication: instruction must be matched to the child’s current stage of development. Presenting highly abstract concepts to a child in the concrete operational stage, for example, will not produce learning – the cognitive structures needed to process that information are not yet in place.

Lev Vygotsky and social learning

Lev Vygotsky (1896-1934) agreed with Piaget that children are active constructors of knowledge, but he placed far greater weight on the role of social interaction and culture. Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory emphasizes the importance of culture and interaction in the development of cognitive abilities.

His most influential contribution is the concept of the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). The ZPD refers to the difference between what learners can do independently and what they can achieve with guidance or collaboration from others, such as adults or more knowledgeable peers. It is within this zone – not below it and not beyond it – that the most meaningful learning takes place.

Closely linked to the ZPD is the concept of scaffolding. Scaffolding is a process that enables a child or novice to solve a task or achieve a goal that would be beyond their unassisted efforts. A teacher who models a strategy first, then guides students through it with prompts, and finally steps back as students work independently is applying Vygotskian scaffolding. The support is temporary and adjustable – it is withdrawn as the learner gains competence.

Vygotsky’s theory is centered on the idea that social interaction is critical to cognitive development. Children do not develop in isolation. They build understanding through conversations with teachers, collaboration with peers, and participation in the cultural practices of their community. This is why group work, dialogue, and collaborative problem-solving are not just engagement strategies – they are, in Vygotsky’s view, the very mechanisms through which learning occurs.

What both perspectives agree on: the role of experience

Despite their significant differences, behaviorist and cognitive theories converge on a central truth: learning does not happen in a vacuum. Both perspectives recognize that real-world experience is what drives change – whether that change is a shift in observable behavior or a reorganization of internal mental structures.

For Pavlov and Skinner, experience means exposure to stimuli and their consequences. For Piaget and Vygotsky, experience means engaging with the world – through exploration, discovery, and interaction with others. Piaget viewed learning as a process of individual exploration and experimentation, while Vygotsky viewed it as a social process, achieved through interaction with more knowledgeable members of the culture.

This shared emphasis on experience has a direct implication for teaching: passive transmission of information is not sufficient. Whether a teacher is designing a reinforcement schedule, creating hands-on discovery activities, or facilitating peer collaboration, they are acknowledging that learners need to do something with knowledge – not merely receive it – for genuine learning to take place.

How these theories shape teaching today

These four theorists are not historical curiosities. Their ideas are embedded in the fabric of modern education. Learning theories are research-based frameworks that explain how students acquire, process, and retain knowledge during learning. They matter for teachers because they provide evidence-based strategies for designing lessons, choosing teaching methods, and understanding why certain approaches work better for different students.

A teacher who uses sticker charts and praise to encourage positive behavior is drawing on Skinner. A teacher who sequences lessons carefully according to what students already know is applying Piaget. A teacher who pairs stronger students with those still developing a skill is working within Vygotsky’s framework. And a teacher who helps students overcome test anxiety through a calm, predictable classroom routine is intuitively working with Pavlovian principles.

No single theory provides a complete picture of how learning works. Learning theories are a set of principles that explain how best a student can acquire, retain and recall new information. The most effective educators draw on multiple frameworks, matching their approach to the needs of their students and the nature of what is being taught. Understanding these theories does not constrain teaching – it expands it.
