Child development follows a remarkably consistent pattern. Across cultures, backgrounds, and time periods, children sit before they stand, babble before they speak, and scribble before they write. This isn’t coincidence – it’s the natural order of how human beings grow. Dr. Arnold Gesell, one of the first researchers to systematically study developmental stages, demonstrated that while every child moves at their own pace, the sequence of development remains the same for all children. Understanding this sequence is fundamental for anyone who works with or raises young children.

The predictable order of development
Development is not random. It follows a fixed, bottom-up progression – both physically and cognitively. According to early childhood researchers, brain development begins with simple neural connections that pave the way for increasingly complex thinking, learning, and behavior over time. A baby must first develop control over large muscle groups before fine motor skills emerge. A child must understand basic concepts before tackling abstract ones.
This is what educators and developmental psychologists mean when they say development is sequential: each new skill, milestone, or ability is built directly on what came before it. Sequential development means growth happens in a set pattern or order, even though the speed at which individual children move through that pattern varies. One child might walk at 10 months, another at 16 months – but both will have gone through the same prior steps.
It is important to distinguish sequence from rate. Sequence refers to the order of development, which is universal. Rate refers to how fast a child moves through that order, which is individual. All children follow the same sequence of development, but at different rates. Recognizing this distinction helps educators and caregivers identify genuine developmental concerns without unnecessarily comparing children to one another.
Examples of sequential growth
The clearest illustrations of sequential development come from everyday observation of children in their first few years of life.
Physical development: from crawling to walking
In physical development, a child will typically roll, then crawl, then walk, and eventually run. Crawling isn’t simply a waiting period before walking – it is a critical stage in its own right. It builds core strength, develops coordination between the left and right sides of the body, and helps the child understand how their body moves in space. The movements required to crawl cause the two sides of the brain to interact, which improves coordination and lays the neurological groundwork for later physical tasks.
Cognitive and fine motor development: drawing circles before squares
Children’s drawing skills also follow a predictable sequence. Before a child can draw a square, they learn to draw a circle. Before they can draw a circle, they scribble freely. This progression isn’t arbitrary – it reflects the gradual refinement of fine motor control and spatial awareness. Each step requires mastery of the one before it. As Piaget’s theory of cognitive development outlined, children build understanding in stages, and each stage equips them with the mental frameworks needed to engage with the next.
Language development: from babbling to sentences
Language acquisition is one of the most dramatic examples of sequential development. Newborns cry to communicate. They then progress to cooing, then babbling, then recognizable words, and finally multi-word sentences. For language development, babies cannot talk automatically after birth – they cry, coo, babble, learn phonics sounds, blend sounds, and finally say single words before moving to complex phrases. Each stage reflects a deeper neurological ability to connect sounds with meaning, and meaning with communication.
The same pattern holds in literacy. Recognizing letter sounds comes first, then decoding words, then reading fluently. And in social-emotional learning, children must first learn to identify their emotions before they can develop the self-regulation skills needed to manage them.
Why sequence matters
The sequential nature of development is not just an interesting observation – it has real implications for learning and behavior. Each stage exists because it serves a function. When a child completes a stage, they gain not just a skill, but a foundation for the next one.
Each stage builds the next
Piaget’s theory made the case that children need the foundation of an earlier stage before they can progress to the next. This is why rushing a child forward in academic content – asking them to read before they have developed phonological awareness, or to write before their fine motor control is ready – can create gaps rather than accelerate learning. Teaching math concepts out of order, for example, may mean children lack the deeper thinking skills they’ll need for more advanced math.
What happens when stages are disrupted?
When children appear to skip developmental stages, or move through them too quickly due to external pressure, the effects can sometimes emerge later as difficulty with more advanced tasks. For several students who show signs of underdeveloped motor skills, parents report that they missed certain developmental milestones, which has made an impact on their learning ability in the classroom.
That said, it’s equally important not to overinterpret isolated gaps. Babies don’t always follow the same playbook when it comes to developmental milestones, and if they master certain skills out of order or skip a milestone, it isn’t necessarily something to be concerned about, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. The key distinction is whether a pattern of delays is emerging across multiple areas, not whether a single milestone was reached slightly late or out of order.
Early identification remains crucial. With clear delays in social and language development, it is important to initiate services even before a confirmed diagnosis, as early intervention is key. Research also shows that children who receive early intervention services often make greater progress and require less intensive support later on.
Supporting sequential development in practice
Understanding that development is sequential changes how teachers, parents, and caregivers approach children’s learning. Instead of pushing children toward the next milestone, the goal becomes ensuring each current stage is fully and solidly experienced.
Observe before you act
The first step is simply watching. Effective early childhood educators blend opportunities for each child to exercise choice and agency within a planned environment designed to support specific learning experiences. This requires knowing where each child currently is in their developmental sequence – not where they “should” be. Ongoing observation allows teachers to tailor activities appropriately and catch any areas where a child may need additional support.
Use developmentally appropriate practice (DAP)
The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) emphasizes that effective teachers choose strategies that match where a child actually is, not just their chronological age. This means giving specific, meaningful feedback, encouraging effort over outcomes, and offering tasks that build incrementally on existing skills. Rather than generic praise, specific feedback (“You counted the same number both times!”) helps children understand what they have actually achieved and what comes next.
Plan activities that build sequentially
Sequential learning is an instructional approach that teaches skills in a step-by-step progression, moving from easier to harder skills in a way that follows how children naturally develop. In practical terms, this means a pre-writing activity should come before writing, large-muscle play should precede fine-motor tasks, and group activities should build on skills children have already developed independently. Structuring the environment so each new challenge follows naturally from the previous one keeps children engaged without overwhelming them.
Recognize that pace varies, sequence does not
One of the most important things educators can do is resist the pressure to compare children’s developmental timelines with each other. Each child has his own way of learning and moves through milestones at their own pace. What matters is that the sequence is being followed – that children aren’t being expected to skip foundational steps simply because they are a certain age. A child who is given time to fully move through each stage typically arrives at the next one with greater readiness and confidence.
Involve families
Parents and caregivers are essential partners in supporting sequential development. Sharing clear, accessible information about what stage a child is in – and what naturally comes next – helps families reinforce learning at home. Simple activities like reading aloud, free play, and unstructured outdoor time all contribute to moving children forward through their developmental sequence in a natural, pressure-free way.
Sequence as the foundation of learning
Development is not a race, and it is not uniform. But it is ordered. The fact that all children move through the same sequence – physically, cognitively, linguistically, and emotionally – is one of the most reliable and useful things we know about child development. It tells us that what a child can do right now is directly connected to what they will be able to do next, and that the best thing we can do is ensure each stage is experienced fully before moving on. While an individual progresses through these stages at his or her own pace, the sequence remains the same – and honoring that sequence is one of the most respectful and effective things an educator or caregiver can do for a child.
