Does language shape the way we think, or does thinking come first and language simply follow? This question has fascinated researchers, educators, and philosophers for decades. The short answer: both are true. Cognition and language are deeply intertwined – each one fueling the development of the other. Understanding this relationship is not just an academic exercise. For teachers and parents working with young children, it has very real implications for how learning happens and how it can be supported.

How language supports thinking
Language is far more than a communication tool. It is, as psychologist Lev Vygotsky argued, a tool for thinking itself. According to Vygotsky, children first use language socially, then begin talking to themselves aloud while solving problems – what he called private speech – and eventually internalize that speech as silent thought, or inner speech. This progression from talking out loud to thinking quietly in words is how social language becomes the engine of individual cognition.
Young children often narrate their own actions while doing tasks – “First I put this here, then this goes there.” This isn’t random chatter. Research on Vygotsky’s model confirms that private speech increases when children face difficult tasks, helping them regulate attention, guide their steps, and work through problems. By around age 7 or 8, this spoken self-guidance goes underground and becomes silent inner speech – the internal monologue through which adults plan, reason, and make decisions.
A 2025 review published in Frontiers in Psychology found that language and executive function – the cognitive skills that include planning, working memory, and impulse control – co-develop in a mutually reinforcing cycle. Progress in one domain creates the scaffolding for growth in the other. This means that a child who is advancing in language is simultaneously building the cognitive architecture needed for complex problem-solving.
The role of verbal ability in problem-solving
Verbal reasoning is central to academic performance. Research from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology found strong links between cognitive skills and language ability, demonstrating that the severity of language difficulties can even be predicted from cognitive markers. The balance between verbal and non-verbal cognitive skills directly shapes a child’s capacity to learn and reason. Children who struggle to communicate their ideas clearly are, in effect, also constrained in how deeply they can think through and organize those ideas.
Can cognition exist without language?
This is where the picture gets more nuanced. The evidence from deaf and hard-of-hearing children offers a particularly powerful window into this question. The key finding from decades of research is this: it is not deafness that limits cognitive development – it is the absence of accessible language.
Deaf children who are exposed to sign language from birth develop language on a typical developmental timeline and show strong cognitive outcomes, including healthy executive functioning skills like working memory, self-regulation, and planning. Sign language activates the same brain regions as spoken language and provides the same cognitive scaffolding. The problem arises when deaf children – the vast majority of whom are born to hearing parents who don’t know sign language – are deprived of consistent, accessible language input during the critical early years.
According to the National Association of the Deaf, “sign language is not only a necessity to ensure a normal cognitive development, language acquisition, and future academic success, but is also shown to be biologically equivalent to spoken language.” This is a critical point: the modality of language – spoken or signed – matters less than whether the child receives rich, consistent language exposure early in life.
Research at Boston University’s Deaf Studies program has shown that without language stimulation during the critical developmental window (birth to age 5), children’s cognitive development, thinking skills, and language development are all at risk – not because of deafness itself, but because of language deprivation. An estimated 70% of deaf children experience some degree of linguistic neglect, which can cause lasting cognitive delays affecting executive functioning and working memory.
So, can cognition develop without language? Some basic cognitive processes – such as visual-spatial reasoning, object recognition, and sensory memory – do operate independently of language. But higher-order thinking skills: planning, abstract reasoning, theory of mind, and academic learning – depend heavily on having a functional language system. Language gives the mind the representational tools it needs to operate at a higher level.
The role of vocabulary in mental development
Words are not just labels. They are cognitive tools. When a child learns the word “mammal,” they don’t just acquire a new term – they gain a mental category that organizes a whole set of animals by shared properties. This process of labeling and categorizing is foundational to thinking. As researchers at NIH have noted, object categorization – a core conceptual capacity – is one of the earliest and most important ways in which language and cognition intersect. Words, in the words of linguist Roger Brown, are “invitations to form categories.”
The data on vocabulary and academic outcomes is striking. A large-scale Danish longitudinal study tracking over 2,000 children found that vocabulary measured as early as 16 months old predicted reading and mathematics performance in sixth grade. Late talkers were significantly more likely to score below average in reading years later.
Research by Hart and Risley (1995) found that by age 4, children from language-rich homes had been exposed to approximately 50 million words, while children from language-poor environments had heard closer to 10 million. That 40-million-word gap translates directly into differences in vocabulary size – and, consequently, into differences in the cognitive tools those children have available for thinking, reasoning, and learning.
A study published in PMC following 164 preschoolers in Head Start programs found that both initial vocabulary levels and growth in vocabulary during the preschool year predicted reading and math achievement in kindergarten. Vocabulary wasn’t just correlated with literacy – it was a meaningful predictor of math outcomes too, indicating that the cognitive benefits of rich language reach well beyond reading.
How labeling sharpens thinking
When children learn to name things, they do more than expand their word bank. Naming requires noticing features, grouping similarities, distinguishing differences – all of which are acts of cognitive organization. Research consistently links a strong vocabulary to better problem-solving skills, critical thinking abilities, and cognitive flexibility. Children with richer vocabularies can more precisely describe and analyze their ideas – a skill that becomes especially important in science, mathematics, and social reasoning.
Educational implications
Understanding the cognition-language connection changes what effective teaching looks like in practice. It suggests that language-rich environments are not a luxury – they are a cognitive necessity. Here is what that means concretely:
Talk more, explain more. Teachers who think aloud while solving problems model the inner speech that children need to internalize. Narrating steps (“Now I’m going to re-read this part because I didn’t understand it”) demonstrates cognitive self-regulation through language. Research suggests that interventions should target language and executive function together, since they are reciprocally reinforcing – improving one helps the other.
Prioritize vocabulary instruction across all subjects. Because vocabulary is predictive of long-term academic success, and because word knowledge builds the mental categories needed for reasoning, vocabulary development should be a deliberate, ongoing focus – not just in literacy lessons, but in science, math, and social studies. Tier-2 academic vocabulary (words like “analyze,” “compare,” “infer”) is particularly important to teach explicitly, as children are less likely to encounter it in everyday conversation.
Act early when language is delayed. Early intervention in cases of delayed or disordered language acquisition is critical – and the window matters. The same holds for deaf and hard-of-hearing children: ensuring full language access from birth, whether through sign language, spoken language, or both, is not just a communication issue. It is a cognitive development issue.
Engage parents as partners. Longitudinal research on language development shows that parental speech and gesture – the quantity and quality of language children hear at home – are among the strongest predictors of a child’s later vocabulary and cognitive skills. Teachers can support parents by helping them understand that everyday conversations, shared reading, and narrating daily activities are powerful cognitive investments in their child’s development.
