From a baby’s first cry to a six-year-old narrating their school day in complete sentences, language development is one of the most remarkable processes in human growth. It happens fast, it happens naturally, and yet it is deeply tied to how children think, learn, and connect with the world around them. For teachers and parents alike, understanding how communication skills evolve – and what can slow them down – is foundational to supporting every child effectively.

Why language development matters

Language is far more than the ability to talk. It is the foundation on which thinking, learning, and social life are built. According to the National Academies of Sciences, speech and language skills allow a child to engage in exchanges that lead to the acquisition of knowledge in educational settings, and these skills are crucial to the development of thinking ability, a sense of self, and full participation in society.

Research published in PMC by the National Institutes of Health confirms that language skills lay the groundwork for other cognitive and social tasks. Preschoolers who struggle to communicate their ideas are less able to sustain play with peers, and early language milestones reliably predict later academic achievement. In other words, the pace at which a child gains language has consequences that reach well into the school years.

The connection between language and cognition runs even deeper. Research from the Norwegian University of Technology, conducted in partnership with the University of Melbourne, found strong links between cognitive skills – such as memory, attention, and spatial awareness – and language acquisition, challenging older beliefs that the two develop independently. Meanwhile, a 2025 review in Frontiers in Psychology describes language and cognition as deeply interwoven, developing through a dynamic, reciprocal process where language helps children reason about the social world and social cognition simultaneously directs attention during language learning.

The Raising Children Network, developed with Australia’s leading child development experts, sums it up clearly: language development underpins cognitive, social, and literacy development, and learning to understand and enjoy language is the very first step toward reading and writing.

Stages of language development

Language does not emerge all at once. It unfolds in identifiable stages, each building on the last. Child development specialists generally describe six primary stages from birth through the early school years.

The prelinguistic stage (birth to 6 months)

Before any recognizable words appear, infants are already communicating. This stage is characterized by crying, cooing, and responses to stimuli. Remarkably, some research indicates that language learning begins even before birth, as fetuses start recognizing the sounds and speech patterns of their mother’s voice. The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) identifies the first three years of life – when the brain is developing most rapidly – as the most intensive period for acquiring speech and language skills.

During the first six months, infants also begin learning which mouth movements correspond to the sounds they hear. The Intercultural Development Research Association (IDRA) notes that face-to-face interaction is critical during this period, not only for teaching sound patterns but for establishing the turn-taking behavior that underlies all future conversation.

The babbling stage (6 to 12 months)

Around six months, infants enter the babbling stage – a period when they begin practicing control of their vocal apparatus. Interestingly, babbling is independent of the language being spoken around a child; even deaf children babble in the same way as hearing ones. By around twelve months, babbling grows in frequency and starts to resemble real words. Reading Rockets, drawing on NIDCD research, confirms that by six months, most children already recognize the basic sounds of their native language.

The two-word and telegraphic stages (1 to 3 years)

Most children say their first recognizable words around their first birthday. According to Yale School of Medicine, by 18 to 24 months, children typically say at least 50 different words, begin combining words into two-word phrases, and can follow simple commands. By age two, most are forming crude sentences. By eighteen months, most children can say eight to ten words, and by age two, most are combining words into short phrases such as “more milk.”

Between two and three years, children move into what is called the telegraphic stage – stringing together three to five words in a pattern similar to how telegrams were written: short, direct, and missing function words. This stage is marked by the rapid growth of vocabulary and the beginning of grammar use.

Beyond the telegraphic stage (3 years and onward)

From age three, children’s language expands dramatically. By ages 4 to 5, typically developing children produce full sentences most of the time with few errors, can tell stories, hold multi-turn conversations with adults, and use language to set up play with peers. By age 8, most children can hold adult-like conversations and have developed the storytelling skills to share ideas and opinions.

Milestones in speech and vocabulary growth

Milestones offer a practical framework for understanding where a child stands in their language journey. They are not rigid rules, but reliable benchmarks. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) emphasizes that each child develops uniquely – even within the same family – and may reach milestones earlier or later than others. What matters is the overall trajectory.

Here is a summary of key milestones across age groups:

  • Birth to 6 months: Cooing, responding to voices, turning toward sounds
  • 6 to 12 months: Babbling begins; child responds to their own name; gestures like waving appear
  • 12 to 18 months: First words emerge; child points to indicate wants; up to 10 recognizable words by 18 months
  • 18 to 24 months: Vocabulary of at least 50 words; two-word combinations; following simple instructions
  • 2 to 3 years: Three-to-four word sentences; short back-and-forth conversations; understood most of the time by family
  • 3 to 5 years: Full sentences; storytelling; conversations with adults and peers; nearly always understood by strangers
  • 5 to 8 years: Complex sentences; reading and writing develop alongside spoken language; adult-like conversations by age 8

Research in cognitive development shows that early word growth, while initially slow, typically sees a significant spurt between 16 and 18 months, and by three years, children usually have vocabularies of hundreds of words. Studies have also shown that children whose parents spoke to them more frequently knew significantly more words by age two and scored higher on standardized tests by age three.

There is also a critical distinction between two types of language ability that develops throughout this period. Receptive language – the ability to understand what is heard or read – develops before expressive language – the ability to produce speech and communicate. Children develop receptive language skills faster than expressive language, which means they understand far more than they can yet say.

Challenges in language acquisition

Not every child’s language journey follows the expected path. A range of challenges can slow down or disrupt language acquisition, and recognizing these early makes a significant difference in outcomes.

Speech and language delays

Estimates suggest that isolated speech and language delays affect between 5% and 12% of children between ages 2 and 5 in the United States. A delay can be significant when it persists into the school years, limits communication, or impairs social development. Children who have trouble understanding what others say (receptive language difficulties) or difficulty sharing their thoughts (expressive language difficulties) may have a language disorder.

It is important to note, however, that not all delays are permanent. Research indicates that at least half of two-year-olds with early expressive language delays will have language skills within the normal range by school age. Still, early expressive delays should not be ignored given the elevated risk of persisting impairment.

Developmental language disorder (DLD)

Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is one of the most common developmental disorders, affecting approximately 1 in 14 children in kindergarten. DLD interferes with learning, understanding, and using language, and its effects are not explained by hearing loss, autism, or lack of language exposure. Children with DLD may struggle with reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, and organizing thoughts into sentences. A major challenge is that DLD often goes unnoticed – by the time children reach school, most can carry on basic conversation and answer routine questions, making the disorder invisible to both parents and teachers.

Hearing loss

Decreased hearing acuity – whether bilateral or unilateral – can significantly impact speech and language development in early childhood. The earlier the hearing loss occurs in a child’s life, the greater the impact on development. Early identification and intervention, such as cochlear implants or hearing aids before age two, can substantially reduce these effects.

Environmental and social factors

Language development does not happen in isolation from a child’s environment. When combined with developmental risks such as poverty, speech and language difficulties can become high-impact conditions with long-term cognitive, social, and academic consequences. Family history of language impairment, limited language exposure at home, and chronic ear infections are all known risk factors. Conversely, rich conversational environments – where caregivers speak often, read aloud, and respond to a child’s attempts to communicate – are strongly associated with better language outcomes.

The role of early intervention

Across all types of challenges, the consistent message from research is that early action matters. Early treatment during the preschool years can improve the skills of many children with language delays. Speech-language pathologists assess and treat children across home, school, and clinical settings, and their involvement – especially before children enter formal schooling – can significantly shift the trajectory of a child’s communication development. Research tracking children from preschool through elementary school has found that those with persistent language delays continue to face difficulties not only in language, but also in academic achievement and social adjustment well into Grade 6.
