Long before a child says their first word, they are already communicating. A newborn’s cry, a two-month-old’s coo, a baby’s outstretched arms-these are all deliberate acts of communication. Language development doesn’t begin when a child speaks; it begins at birth. Understanding how this remarkable process unfolds, stage by stage, helps parents and educators recognize what’s normal, what’s meaningful, and how to actively support a child’s growing ability to express themselves.

First signs of communication
From the very first day of life, infants are communicating. According to Great Ormond Street Hospital, from birth, babies produce a range of sounds-crying, coughing, and sounds made while breathing-each carrying specific meaning, such as signaling hunger or discomfort. These are not random; they are the earliest tools an infant has to interact with the world.
Crying is a child’s first language. But it quickly evolves. As the weeks pass, babies begin to use crying less frequently as other forms of communication develop. Around 6 to 8 weeks, infants begin producing soft vowel sounds-“oo,” “ah,” “eh”-in a stage known as cooing. This is not just adorable; it is developmentally critical. The cooing stage is when a baby starts to develop control of the muscles needed for talking, making it a genuine precursor to speech, not merely noise.
Alongside vocalizations, infants also begin communicating through gestures. Babies as young as 3 to 4 months reach out for objects, and by 6 to 9 months, they shake their heads “no.” Research suggests that gesture usage actually predicts subsequent language development-children who gesture more tend to develop stronger verbal skills later. Even deaf babies use gestures to express wants, reactions, and feelings, demonstrating that the drive to communicate is innate and not dependent on hearing alone.
The babbling stage
A baby’s first babbling sounds typically emerge around 4 to 6 months, as infants begin practicing the speech sounds they will later use to form syllables and words. This marks a significant shift in development. Rather than vocalizing only to signal distress or contentment, the infant is now experimenting with sound for its own sake.
What babbling actually is
Babbling is a stage in language acquisition during which an infant experiments with articulate sounds but does not yet produce recognizable words. It begins with simple consonant-vowel sequences-“ba-ba,” “ma-ma,” “da-da”-and becomes progressively more complex. By about 9 to 10 months, babbling begins to mimic the rhythm and intonation of the child’s native language-a babbling infant in a French-speaking household sounds noticeably different from one in an English-speaking home, even though neither is producing real words yet.
This language-specific quality of babbling is not accidental. Research published in PMC confirms that canonical babbling-the production of well-formed consonant-vowel syllables-emerges by the second half of the first year and directly precedes first words, predicting later language outcomes. Abnormal or delayed babbling, conversely, has been linked to later language difficulties, making it an important early indicator of development.
Babbling as a social act
Babbling is not just vocal practice-it is also a form of social engagement. Babbling helps children understand the social, communicative function of language; these vocalizations carry a conversational tone that sounds meaningful even though they are not yet words. When caregivers respond to babbling-with a smile, a nod, or by babbling back-infants learn that their sounds get a reaction, which motivates continued practice and refinement.
Single-word and telegraphic speech
Around 12 months, most infants produce their first recognizable words. These early words-typically simple nouns like “mama,” “dada,” “ball,” or “more”-mark the beginning of what linguists call holophrasic speech. A child may say “ju” for juice and use this sound consistently when referring to a bottle; the single word carries an entire thought or intention. A caregiver who knows the child well can usually interpret these holophrases accurately.
Importantly, at around 10 months, an infant’s receptive language-what they understand-significantly outpaces their expressive language-what they can say. One of the first words children understand is their own name, usually by about 6 months, followed by common words like “bottle,” “mama,” and “doggie” by 10 to 12 months. This means children are absorbing far more language than they can yet produce-a critical insight for parents who might worry about “slow” speech.
Telegraphic speech: the two-word leap
Between 18 and 24 months, children make a significant grammatical leap into telegraphic speech-short, stripped-down phrases that carry meaning while omitting grammatical function words. By the time they become toddlers, children have a vocabulary of about 50 to 200 words and begin putting them together in phrases like “baby bye-bye” or “doggie pretty.” Words needed to convey the message are present; articles, prepositions, and verb endings are not.
These sentences are called “telegraphic” because they read like old-fashioned telegrams-only the essential words. What’s striking is that even at this stage, children already follow the word-order rules of their native language. An English-speaking toddler says “more cookie,” not “cookie more.” This consistency shows that grammatical development is already well underway, even with just two words at a time. By 24 to 30 months, three-word combinations like “daddy go work” or “mommy give milk” emerge, with function words still mostly absent but meaning coming through clearly.
Two common but normal errors appear at this stage. Overextension occurs when a child applies a word too broadly-calling every four-legged animal “doggie.” Underextension is the opposite-using “car” only for the family’s specific car and not recognizing other vehicles by the same name. These errors actually reveal how actively children are organizing language, not a sign that something is wrong.
How parents can support early language growth
The home environment plays a decisive role in how language develops. Children who hear fewer words and are engaged in less conversation before age 3 have dramatically smaller vocabularies than those with richer early language experiences. But quantity is only part of the picture. A meta-analysis of 52 studies found that the quality of parental speech-diverse vocabulary and complex sentence structure-plays an even more significant role in early language development than sheer quantity of words spoken.
Use infant-directed speech (parentese)
Parents instinctively speak to babies differently than they do to adults-slower, higher-pitched, with exaggerated intonation. This style, known as infant-directed speech or “parentese,” is not just cute; it is functionally important. Research published in PNAS found that parent coaching to increase the use of parentese and back-and-forth conversational turns significantly advanced infants’ language development between 6 and 18 months. Parentese helps infants identify word boundaries and sound patterns within the continuous flow of speech they hear around them.
Respond and take turns
Early communication is fundamentally reciprocal. When a baby coos, coo back. When a baby babbles, respond with words that acknowledge what they seem to be expressing. According to the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), when infants coo, parents should respond through a give-and-take conversation by cooing and smiling back. This turn-taking dynamic teaches infants that communication is a two-way process-one of the most foundational lessons in language learning.
Research also shows that when parents respond to their babies in a sensitive, positive manner, babies develop better language skills-and that this sensitivity at as early as 3 months predicts more advanced language at 18 and 30 months. The implication is clear: responsive parenting, not just talking volume, is what drives early language growth.
Read, talk, and narrate daily life
Studies show that children whose parents and caregivers regularly talk and read with them develop larger vocabularies and go on to become better readers and perform better in school. Reading aloud from infancy exposes children to vocabulary they would not encounter in everyday conversation and helps them internalize the rhythm and structure of language. But reading isn’t the only opportunity-narrating daily routines (“Now we’re washing your hands. First the soap, then the water”) also builds vocabulary and exposes children to sentence structure naturally.
Using “expectant waiting”-asking a question and pausing to let the child respond-models natural language and gives children time to process and attempt communication. Parents should also resist the urge to correct errors harshly. A toddler saying “goed” instead of “went” is not making a mistake-they are applying a rule they’ve figured out. Responding positively keeps children motivated to keep experimenting with language.
Talk directly to the child
One nuance worth emphasizing: research tracking home language environments found that it was only speech addressed directly to the infant-not adult conversations overheard by the child-that predicted vocabulary growth at 24 months. Background conversation from a television or between adults does not carry the same developmental benefit. Direct, engaged, face-to-face interaction is what makes the difference.
Language development in the early years is not a passive process-it is shaped, accelerated, and enriched by every conversation, every shared book, and every responsive exchange between a child and the adults around them. The stages from crying to cooing, from babbling to first words, from single utterances to telegraphic phrases, are not just linguistic milestones. They are windows into a child’s growing mind, and moments where caregivers have an extraordinary opportunity to participate in one of the most complex things a human being will ever learn to do.
