Most of us grew up in classrooms where the teacher spoke and students listened. That model is deeply familiar – but it is not the only way learning happens. In 1999, educational researcher Dr. Sugata Mitra ran an experiment that would challenge this assumption entirely. He installed a computer in a wall bordering a New Delhi slum, connected it to the internet, and walked away. Within weeks, children with no formal training had taught themselves to use it – and were teaching each other. Mitra called this Minimally Invasive Education (MIE): a model where learning is driven by curiosity, not instruction. But MIE does not mean teachers disappear. It means their role changes – profoundly.

What minimally invasive education actually means
Minimally Invasive Education is built on a core idea: learning is something you do, not something that is done to you. As the Wikipedia entry on MIE puts it, there are many ways to learn without a teacher’s intervention being necessary. Children taught themselves to read from cereal boxes, street signs, and game instructions. No child in MIE-based settings was forced, pushed, or bribed into learning – and the results were strong.
This does not mean the teacher is irrelevant. It means the teacher must work differently – with restraint, observation, and strategic support rather than constant direction. Mitra has argued that the traditional classroom, designed for a different era, often suppresses the very curiosity it should be nurturing. His solution: redefine what a teacher does.
Observing without directing
The first and perhaps most counterintuitive shift in MIE is that the teacher steps back and watches. In a Self-Organised Learning Environment (SOLE), the teacher’s role is described simply as: observe the children and stay out of their way. This is harder than it sounds. Teachers who try SOLE for the first time often report discomfort – the instinct to jump in and fix problems is strong. But those short-term fixes, as researchers have noted, undermine the long-term benefits of self-directed exploration.
Observation is not passive. A teacher watching a SOLE session is paying close attention: noticing which students are struggling, which groups are heading in a wrong direction, and what gaps might need addressing later. This information shapes future decisions about when and how to step in. The teacher is gathering data, not just waiting.
Research from a UK primary school following one teacher’s use of SOLEs over two years found that she used observation to notice shifts in social dynamics – how students chose their groups, how responsibilities evolved, and how individual learners changed over time. That kind of insight is only available to a teacher who is watching, not talking.
Providing learning resources without interference
Stepping back does not mean leaving students without support. One of the most important things a teacher does in MIE is ensure the right resources are in place before the learning begins. As one implementation guide explains, if students do not know where to look, they go in circles. Having relevant, reliable sources available allows them to build conclusions on evidence rather than guesswork.
This is an act of design, not interference. The teacher curates the environment – selecting appropriate websites, physical materials, or tools – without directing what students should find or conclude. The distinction matters: providing a resource is different from providing an answer. One opens a path; the other closes inquiry.
The NIIT Foundation’s account of MIE highlights that teachers can integrate technology allowing students to learn at their own pace, design group projects that promote collaboration, and create flexible, student-centred spaces – all of which mirror the conditions that made the Hole in the Wall experiment powerful. The teacher is an architect of the learning environment, even when absent from the centre of it.
Encouraging peer learning
One of the most consistent findings across MIE research is that students learn effectively from each other. In Mitra’s original Hole in the Wall experiments, children who figured out how to use the computer immediately began teaching those around them. This peer transmission of knowledge was not incidental – it was central to the model.
In SOLE sessions, students search the internet together, debate what they find, synthesise information across sources, and present findings to their peers. This process builds digital literacy and critical thinking alongside the subject content. Crucially, students are not just sharing answers – they are modelling thinking processes for each other.
The teacher’s role here is to structure the conditions for peer learning rather than manage its content. StartSOLE’s framework notes that once the “Big Question” is posed, the teacher’s job is to let the adventure begin – offering open and supportive questions and encouragement when needed, but not leading students toward any particular answer. The teacher enables the peer dynamic by designing for it, then trusting it.
Research on learner autonomy in structured environments reinforces this. Teachers who act as facilitators – psychosocial supporters, motivators, and guides – rather than sole knowledge sources help learners develop the capacity to take genuine control of their own education. Peer interaction is a key mechanism through which that capacity is built.
When to intervene: the art of strategic stepping in
MIE does not call for the teacher to be absent – it calls for the teacher to intervene strategically. The question is not whether to intervene, but when and how.
Intervening at the right moment
The most important intervention in MIE is the one that happens before the session begins: the question. SOLE guidance from the Association for Learning Technology is clear that questions should not have easy answers and should not lead students toward a predetermined conclusion. A question like “How many countries are there?” can be typed directly into a search engine. A question like “What did the Vikings believe about God?” opens up territory students have not already covered. The quality of the teacher’s question determines the quality of the learning that follows.
During a session, intervention is warranted when students hit a wall – not when they are merely uncomfortable. Teachers in SOLE sessions are advised to facilitate rather than instruct during investigation, asking questions and offering encouragement. It is normal for students to struggle with the freedom initially. That struggle is productive. Allowing space for students to figure things out on their own fosters communication and collaboration in ways that a teacher stepping in too quickly would prevent.
Using intervention to raise the bar
Strategic intervention also means introducing new challenges once the current one has been sufficiently explored. This is how the teacher ensures learning does not plateau. After a review session where groups present their findings, the teacher can probe further – asking what students did not find, what questions remain open, or what a different approach might reveal. The review stage is not just a debrief – it is a chance for the teacher to reintroduce complexity and push thinking to the next level.
Mitra’s own work included a version of this. When children in a village studied DNA replication on their own and scored an initial three out of ten, he did not step in with direct instruction. Instead, he introduced a new element – an encouraging adult who stood behind the children, admired their work, and asked questions like a curious grandmother. The scores rose to five out of ten: the same result achieved in a formally taught private school class. The intervention was not instruction. It was encouragement and challenge delivered at the right moment.
The “grandmother method” as a model
Mitra formalised this approach as the “Granny Cloud” – a network of retired teachers who connected with students via Skype, offering admiration, questions, and encouragement rather than direct teaching. This model captures something essential about the teacher’s role in MIE: the most powerful interventions are often those that build confidence and curiosity, not those that deliver content. A teacher who says “That is fascinating – what do you think happens next?” is doing something genuinely different from one who says “Let me explain.”
The teacher as designer, observer, and catalyst
What emerges from MIE is a three-part model of the teacher’s role. First, the teacher is a designer – crafting the question, curating the resources, and setting up the physical or digital environment. Second, the teacher is an observer – watching carefully, gathering information, and resisting the urge to intervene unnecessarily. Third, the teacher is a catalyst – stepping in at moments of genuine need or opportunity to introduce new challenges, offer encouragement, and push learning forward.
Research on self-directed learning environments affirms that learning is an active process of constructing meaning rather than passively receiving information. Teachers who design for this – through scaffolding, open questions, and well-timed encouragement – help students develop the internal capacity to keep learning long after the lesson ends. That is a far more durable outcome than any single answer a teacher could provide.
MIE does not diminish the teacher. It demands more of them – more awareness, more restraint, more skill in designing the conditions for discovery. The teacher in a minimally invasive model is not doing less. They are doing something harder: trusting the learner, and knowing precisely when that trust needs a nudge.
