Professional development for teachers has traditionally meant attending workshops scheduled by schools or following training programmes designed by institutions. But that model has a significant limitation – it’s driven by what the institution thinks teachers need, not what individual teachers actually want to learn. With the widespread availability of ICT tools, this dynamic has shifted. Today, a teacher in rural India can connect with an educator in Finland, contribute to a global knowledge base, or join a live discussion about classroom strategies – all from a personal device, on their own time, entirely by choice. This post explores how teachers can take their professional growth into their own hands using wikis, blogs, discussion forums, and social media.

The shift from institution-driven to self-driven learning

For a long time, teacher professional development was something that happened to teachers – organized top-down, delivered in fixed formats, and rarely aligned with an individual teacher’s specific classroom challenges. Research published in Teaching and Teacher Education defines self-directed professional development as growth arising from a teacher’s own initiative – a process that is internally determined and driven by personal goals rather than institutional mandates.

This matters because centrally planned programmes often suffer from a well-documented mismatch: what teachers are trained in during workshops doesn’t always translate to what they actually do in classrooms. Self-directed learning, on the other hand, starts with the teacher identifying their own needs – which means the learning is immediately relevant and more likely to stick.

A 2025 systematic review published in Frontiers in Education reinforces this point, finding that one-time workshops and infrequent training sessions are not enough to sustain digital literacy or instructional innovation. Instead, the review calls for lifelong learning through self-directed pathways, webinars, action research, and digital learning communities. ICT is the infrastructure that makes all of this possible – and accessible.

The core drivers for ICT-mediated self-development identified in studies include: accessing and downloading web-based learning materials, networking with peers and professional organisations, and generating instructional content. These aren’t passive activities. They require teachers to make deliberate choices about what to learn, where to find it, and how to apply it – which is precisely what makes ICT-mediated development so empowering.

Wikis for collaborative knowledge building

A wiki is a website that multiple users can create and edit collaboratively, with all changes tracked and visible. Wikipedia is the most widely known example, but wikis have extensive educational and professional applications well beyond encyclopedia entries.

For teachers, wikis function as communication and resource-sharing tools that can operate at the level of a department, a school, a region, or even nationally. A history department can use a shared wiki to build a repository of lesson plans, primary sources, and assessment strategies. A group of science teachers across different schools can collaboratively document inquiry-based teaching techniques, adding to and refining the content over time.

What distinguishes a wiki from other tools is its open editability. According to Education for a Digital World, unlike blogs – where content flows from a single author – wikis are open to multiple authors working simultaneously, and each saved version of a page becomes a cumulative product that can continue to evolve. This makes them ideal for building shared knowledge that grows richer with every contribution.

Platforms like Wikispaces (and its successors), PBworks, and Confluence allow teachers to set up professional wikis without any technical background. Pages can be linked to journal articles, embedded with videos, and organised by topic or grade level. The key value is this: instead of each teacher reinventing the wheel independently, a wiki allows a community of educators to build on each other’s work collectively.

Practical ways to use wikis for professional growth

A teacher can start by contributing to an existing educational wiki rather than building one from scratch. Subject-specific wikis – such as those maintained by professional associations – already contain peer-reviewed and practitioner-verified content. Contributing even a single well-documented lesson strategy, or editing an existing entry with a classroom-tested insight, is a meaningful form of professional engagement. Over time, consistent wiki participation develops research habits, content expertise, and a sense of ownership over one’s professional knowledge base.

Blogs and discussion forums for reflective engagement

Blogging has become one of the most effective and accessible forms of teacher self-development. As reported in Educational Leadership, thousands of accomplished educators are now writing blogs where they reflect on instruction, challenge assumptions, offer advice, and learn together – and all of this collective knowledge is freely available.

A teaching blog serves two purposes simultaneously. First, it functions as a reflective journal – the act of writing about a classroom experience forces a teacher to articulate what worked, what didn’t, and why. Second, it creates an audience. Unlike a private journal, a blog invites responses, disagreements, and additions from other educators, which deepens the reflection and broadens the perspective.

Platforms like Edublogs, WordPress, and Blogger make it straightforward for teachers to start their own professional blogs with no web development skills. A teacher doesn’t need to post daily – even monthly reflective posts on classroom experiments, curriculum adaptations, or pedagogical questions build a meaningful professional record over time.

Discussion forums as learning spaces

Online discussion forums extend the conversation beyond a single blogger’s readership. Forums dedicated to education – on platforms like Reddit’s r/Teachers and r/EdTech, or community sections within Edutopia – allow teachers to post questions, share experiences, and crowdsource solutions from a global community of practitioners.

Digital Promise highlights that communities on platforms like LinkedIn, Reddit, and subject-specific forums often post open questions for educators to respond to and collaborate on, making them effective spaces for peer learning that is neither formal nor institutional. A teacher struggling with differentiated instruction for a mixed-ability class, for instance, can post a specific question in a relevant forum and receive responses from dozens of teachers who have faced the same challenge – a form of mentorship at scale that no single school can replicate.

Social media for professional networking

Social media platforms are often associated with personal use, but for teachers, they represent a powerful infrastructure for building what is known as a Professional Learning Network (PLN) – an informal but intentional network of educators who share ideas, resources, and expertise.

The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) describes a PLN as a powerful professional development tool that allows teachers to connect with peers across the country, seek advice, trade best practices, and simply network with other professionals – typically through platforms like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and similar social channels.

Facebook groups

Facebook groups have become one of the most active spaces for teacher professional exchange, partly because the demographic of regular Facebook users closely overlaps with the demographics of the teaching profession. NC State College of Education’s Assistant Professor Robin Anderson, who has studied educator interactions on Facebook for over five years, notes that when teachers share on social media, they are sharing expertise – and watching another expert teach, even through a post or video, is itself a form of professional learning. Subject-specific Facebook groups allow teachers to observe how peers approach teaching problems, ask direct questions, and receive collaborative feedback.

LinkedIn for career-oriented professional exchange

LinkedIn, with over one billion members across more than 200 countries, is the world’s largest professional network and an increasingly active space for educators. Beyond maintaining a professional profile, teachers use LinkedIn to publish reflective articles, engage with education policy discussions, follow thought leaders in pedagogy and EdTech, and connect with university researchers whose work is directly applicable to classroom practice. LinkedIn’s Groups feature also hosts educator communities focused on specific subjects, teaching levels, or pedagogical approaches.

Twitter (now X) and hashtag-driven learning

Twitter – now rebranded as X – remains one of the most dynamic platforms for real-time educator exchange. Digital Promise recommends following educators, administrators, and educational organisations and participating in conversations through hashtags like #EdChat, #EduTwitter, and subject-specific tags like #mtbos (for mathematics teachers). These hashtag communities function as ongoing, self-organising professional conferences – with contributions happening every hour of every day, across time zones.

Research on social media for professional learning highlights that Twitter’s microblogging format also supports live chats – structured, time-limited conversations around a specific education topic – which have been shown to be highly valued by participating teachers for their immediacy and collaborative energy. A study of preservice teachers found that 61% expressed intent to continue participating in professional Twitter live chats after experiencing them for the first time.

Starting with vetted communities

The sheer volume of content on social media can be overwhelming. A practical starting point, as recommended by education researchers, is to begin with spaces maintained by professional organisations – such as subject-specific councils or international bodies like ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education) – and then follow the educators, hashtags, and blogs that emerge from those trusted starting points. This approach ensures the learning remains grounded while still being self-directed.

Building a consistent personal initiative

The common thread across wikis, blogs, forums, and social media is that they all require personal initiative. None of these tools deliver professional growth passively. A teacher has to choose to contribute to a wiki, commit to writing a reflective blog post, or spend fifteen minutes engaging with an educational hashtag. The payoff, however, is substantial: access to a global community of practice, a personal archive of professional reflection, and the kind of pedagogical exposure that no single school or training programme can provide.

The Frontiers in Education review emphasises that teachers who engage in self-directed digital learning develop not only technical skills but also the critical and reflective capacities needed to assess and adapt technology for effective teaching. In other words, using ICT for self-development doesn’t just make a teacher more digitally literate – it makes them a more thoughtful, adaptive, and better-connected professional overall.

The good news is that none of these tools require institutional permission, significant budgets, or technical expertise. They require only the decision to begin.
