Play is how children make sense of their world. Through play, they develop language, build friendships, sharpen thinking skills, and grow emotionally. But for children with disabilities, engaging in play is rarely straightforward. According to the Encyclopedia on Early Childhood Development, disabilities can affect how often a child plays, what they play, and in some cases, whether they play at all. Understanding how different disabilities shape play behavior is essential for educators, caregivers, and therapists working to give every child meaningful, developmental play experiences.

How disability shapes a child’s approach to play
Play is not a single activity – it takes many forms, including locomotor, object-based, language-based, pretend, and sociodramatic play. Research shows that for some children, a disability can affect all of these forms, while for others, only certain types of play are impacted. What’s consistent across disabilities is that children often need specific teaching, repeated practice, and varied experiences to develop play skills that typically developing children acquire naturally through observation and imitation.
The T-TAC at Old Dominion University notes that play involves qualities like child-initiation, adult support, and intrinsic pleasure – and that many children with disabilities find the transition from early sensorimotor exploration to more complex, preoperational play especially difficult. They may need help connecting sensory experience with ideas, developing motor exploration skills, and finding ways to express themselves through play.
This does not mean children with disabilities cannot play – far from it. It means that thoughtful, tailored support makes all the difference.
Play and children with visual impairment
Sight is the primary sense through which most children discover and interact with the world. A child who can see easily watches others play, reaches for attractive objects, and imitates what they see. For a child with a visual impairment, all of this requires a different pathway.
According to APH ConnectCenter, if a child with visual impairment hasn’t started playing with toys the way other children their age do, the reason is often that they simply cannot see the toy clearly and don’t know what to do with it – which means it’s time to teach them how to play. Without deliberate teaching, children with visual impairments may remain at an early exploratory stage, mouthing or holding objects rather than engaging in functional or pretend play appropriate for their age.
Research published in the journal Research in Developmental Disabilities found that children with severe visual impairments spent more time in exploratory play than those with moderate impairments, and that children with blindness engaged in less functional pretend play than their peers. This highlights how the degree of visual impairment directly correlates with the complexity of play a child can access without support.
Adaptations that open up play
The good news is that practical adaptations can significantly expand play possibilities. New England Low Vision recommends toys that engage touch, sound, and vibration – such as textured mats, tactile balls, sound-producing rattles, and shape sorters that make sounds when pieces land correctly. These tools help children explore and interact with their environment using their strongest remaining senses.
Studies on sound-augmented toys show that adding audio feedback to play figures can capture children’s shared attention and facilitate parallel play among visually impaired peers, helping build awareness of others during play sessions. For older children, braille-adapted board games, tactile puzzles, and embossed books support more complex play and concept development. Direct teaching of play skills – rather than waiting for them to emerge naturally – remains central to supporting children with visual impairments.
Play and children with hearing impairment
Language and communication are the backbone of most play between children. A child with a hearing impairment faces a significant challenge in joining peer play – not because of a lack of desire to connect, but because the main channels of initiation (calling out, responding to verbal cues, following spoken rules) are difficult or unavailable to them.
Research from the PMC on developmental synchrony documents that before the advent of modern hearing technology, many children with hearing loss in mainstream settings reported feeling socially isolated – physically present in the same room as hearing peers but unable to fully participate. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) confirms that early exposure and consistent access to a complete language – whether spoken, signed, or through augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) – is critical for the communication development that underlies social play.
Hearing impairment can lead to isolation during group play, difficulty initiating activities, and challenges responding to peers in real time. Children may withdraw from noisy play environments where they struggle to follow conversations, or they may react in ways that seem socially inappropriate simply because they missed key verbal exchanges.
Communication-first play strategies
Adapting play for children with hearing impairment starts with adapting how communication happens within play. AAC strategies – including picture boards, sign language, and speech-generating devices – serve as bridges to participation, allowing children to express themselves, negotiate play roles, and respond to peers even without spoken language. Movement-based activities are especially valuable because they naturally reduce reliance on verbal communication while still offering rich opportunities for social interaction and shared experience.
A study on school adaptation programs for hearing-impaired children found that planned play activities focused on cooperation, mutual understanding, and peer relationships significantly improved social participation. Creating predictable, visually supported play routines – where children know what comes next and can follow along without depending entirely on hearing – makes play accessible and enjoyable.
Play and children with intellectual disability
Intellectual disability affects complex thinking, problem-solving, and the ability to understand abstract concepts. In play, this often means a child spends more time in early-stage object exploration – touching, mouthing, banging – rather than advancing to functional play (using objects for their intended purpose) or pretend play (using objects symbolically).
Research examining play-based interventions for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities across South Asia found that structured play programs produced significant gains in communication, daily living, and social skills – demonstrating that children with intellectual disabilities are absolutely capable of developing through play when given the right structured support. The key distinction is that these skills don’t emerge spontaneously in the way they might for a typically developing child; they require consistent demonstration, guided practice, and repetition.
Pretend play, in particular, is often limited in children with intellectual disabilities. Because pretend play requires holding a symbolic idea in mind (a block “becomes” a car, a banana “becomes” a phone), it draws heavily on the kind of abstract thinking that may be delayed. Teachers and caregivers can support this progression by demonstrating the next level of play – showing a child how an object can be used symbolically – and then gradually stepping back as the child begins to imitate and internalize that behavior.
Supporting play skill development
Practical support strategies include using age-appropriate materials such as sorting activities with nuts, bolts, or buttons, and incorporating repetition into play routines. Floor time techniques, where an adult joins the child’s play at their level and follows the child’s lead before gently guiding them forward, have been shown to help children with severe learning differences develop play skills and improve language use. The goal is never to push a child past their readiness, but to consistently offer a clear, modeled pathway to the next stage of play.
Play and children with cerebral palsy
Cerebral palsy (CP) is a neurological condition affecting movement, muscle tone, and posture, arising from brain injury during development. Its primary impact on play is physical: Physiopedia notes that children with CP face difficulties grasping toys, maintaining a sitting position during tabletop play, moving between play areas, and manipulating small objects. Speech difficulties further limit a child’s ability to participate in verbal play exchanges with peers.
Research on assistive technology for learners with CP confirms that motor impairments – including restricted movement and reduced dexterity – make it difficult to engage in writing, object manipulation, or freely moving through physical space. Without adaptations, these barriers exclude children from activities they are cognitively and emotionally ready for.
Environmental and material adaptations
Universally designed play environments offer a strong starting point. Inclusive playgrounds with ramps, elevated sandboxes, wide pathways, and accessible swings allow children with CP to participate physically in outdoor play alongside peers. For indoor play, Physiopedia recommends attaching toys to tables or the floor for children with poor motor control, using velcro on play materials to aid gripping, and adjusting the size and weight of objects to suit each child’s specific motor profile. Simple, low-cost adaptations – like a cardboard box filled with objects of different textures – can provide rich sensory and exploratory play without requiring expensive equipment.
AllPlay Learn Australia emphasizes letting children with CP choose their preferred toys and providing plenty of time to explore them, combined with communication supports like pictures, gestures, and tablets that allow them to express their play preferences and interact with peers.
The environment as a barrier – and as an enabler
Beyond the child’s individual disability, the environment itself can block or enable play. Inaccessible toys placed out of reach, broken or inappropriate play materials, playgrounds designed without mobility in mind, and – critically – the attitudes of adults and peers all determine whether a child with a disability gets to play or watches from the sidelines.
A multi-country study published in PMC found that children with disabilities face notable disparities in play opportunities offered by other people, and that parental attitudes, stigma, and structural factors like work demands all affect how much play support children with disabilities receive at home and in the community. This points to the responsibility of not just individual caregivers, but systems – schools, communities, and policies – to make play accessible.
The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) emphasizes that peers without disabilities who model positive communication and social behaviors in inclusive classrooms give children with disabilities something textbooks cannot – a real, live example of how play works. When children with and without disabilities play together, the benefits flow both ways: children with disabilities gain models and social opportunities, while typically developing children build empathy, patience, and an authentic appreciation of diversity.
Play as a window into a child’s development
One of the most powerful and often overlooked aspects of play is what it reveals. When a child plays freely – without adult-directed tasks or structured lessons – they show exactly where they are developmentally. A child’s play can signal hearing difficulties (when they don’t respond to sounds during a game), cognitive understanding (when they correctly sort objects by size or color), language mastery (when they narrate their own actions or pretend to have conversations), fine motor development (when they struggle or succeed at threading beads), and social-emotional skills (when they take turns, share toys, or comfort a peer).
For educators and therapists, observing a child at play is one of the richest assessment tools available precisely because the child is uninhibited. As researchers note, poor play behavior – wandering, anxiousness, dabbling without intent, or withdrawal – is itself a developmental signal. When a child doesn’t play, or plays in ways that seem stuck at an early stage, that is important information about where support is needed.
This makes creating authentic, unhurried, child-led play time not just a nice-to-have, but an essential part of developmental assessment and educational planning for children with disabilities.
