From the moment a baby is born, language development begins – not with words, but with a cry. In just six short years, a child moves from that first reflexive sound to telling stories, asking complex questions, and even talking to themselves while they play. This journey through oral language development is one of the most remarkable processes in human growth, and understanding each stage helps educators, caregivers, and parents respond in ways that genuinely support a child’s communication. Here is a close look at every major stage, from birth through age six.

Crying: the first form of communication
Before any word or sound, there is crying. According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), the first signs of communication occur when an infant learns that a cry will bring food, comfort, and companionship. Crying is entirely innate – no one teaches a newborn to cry. It is a built-in, biological mechanism to signal need.
What makes crying particularly significant is that it is not a single, uniform sound. Caregivers who spend time with an infant quickly learn to distinguish between a hunger cry, a pain cry, and a cry of frustration. Great Ormond Street Hospital notes that crying and making noises are important because they teach the baby to control air from the lungs and use the vocal cords – laying the very foundation for speech. Beyond its communicative role, the acoustic properties of a newborn’s cry can also carry clinical significance: variations in its rhythm and pitch have been studied as potential markers for certain neurological conditions in the neonatal period.
Cooing: the arrival of vowel sounds
Around the second month of life, something shifts. The pre-talking stage introduces cooing – soft, musical vowel-like sounds such as “oooo” and “aaaa” – produced most often during face-to-face interaction with caregivers. Unlike crying, cooing carries a quality of contentment. It signals that the infant is comfortable, engaged, and beginning to explore the possibilities of their own voice.
Cooing is more than just pleasant noise. Great Ormond Street Hospital explains that the cooing stage is when a baby begins to develop control of the muscles needed for talking. Just as importantly, cooing initiates the early social dynamic of turn-taking: the infant coos, the caregiver responds, the infant coos again. This back-and-forth is the earliest rehearsal of conversation, and it establishes a foundational social skill that will underpin all future communication.
Babbling: combining consonants and vowels
Around four to six months, vocal play expands dramatically, and by six to nine months, most infants enter the babbling stage. Babbling involves the production of repetitive consonant-vowel combinations – “dadada,” “mamama,” “bababa” – produced through a rhythmic opening and closing of the jaw. This is called canonical babbling, and it is a critical developmental milestone.
One of the most fascinating aspects of early babbling is that infants across the world initially produce sounds from all human languages, suggesting a universal biological readiness for any language. However, as the child is exposed to the specific sounds of their home language, unused sounds gradually fade. By around 12 months, babbling uses primarily the sounds of the language the child is learning.

Delays in its onset have been associated with hearing impairment, developmental disorders, and later language delays – making it an important early screening marker for clinicians and educators working with young children.
First words: consistent use of meaningful sounds
A child’s utterance is only considered a true first word when it is used consistently to refer to a specific object, person, or action. A baby who occasionally says “mama” is not yet using a first word in the linguistic sense; one who reliably says “mama” when referring to their mother is. Reading Rockets notes that children say their first words between 12 and 18 months of age, though individual variation is significant.
Early words are heavily influenced by what children need to communicate. In English-speaking environments, first words tend to be nouns – names for familiar objects and people like “ball,” “cup,” or “dog.” Research on first words and cultural influences shows that in verb-rich languages like Chinese, children may actually learn more verbs early on, reflecting how cultural emphasis shapes vocabulary acquisition.
Two important word-use patterns appear at this stage. Overextension occurs when a child applies one word too broadly – calling every four-legged animal “doggie,” for example. Underextension is the opposite: the child uses a word only for one specific instance, such as calling only the family’s own dog “doggie” and no others. Both are normal features of early word learning as children work out the boundaries of what words mean.
From holophrase to telegraphic speech: the first sentences
Before children begin combining words, single words do a lot of heavy lifting. A word used to convey an entire thought or sentence is called a holophrase. Social Sci LibreTexts gives a clear example: a child who says “ju” when they want juice is using that single sound to mean something like “I want juice right now.” The meaning is carried not just by the word, but by the child’s tone, gesture, and the context of the moment. Caregivers who know the child well are usually the best interpreters.
As vocabulary expands past about 50 words – typically around 18 months – children begin combining two words into simple phrases. This is called telegraphic speech, because it strips language down to only the most essential words, much like an old telegram. Common examples include phrases like “mama go,” “more juice,” or “doggy eat.” Articles, prepositions, and grammatical markers are missing, but the core meaning is communicated effectively. Pathfinder Health notes that telegraphic speech signals that the child is not only building vocabulary, but also beginning to grasp the rules of sentence construction.
Expanding vocabulary and grammar: ages 2 to 4
The period between ages two and four brings some of the most rapid language growth in human development. Between ages 2 and 3, children move from two-word phrases to three- to five-word sentences, begin using pronouns like “me” and “you,” and start experimenting with plurals and common verbs. Vocabulary can grow to anywhere between 200 and 1,000 words by age three, depending heavily on how much rich language the child hears and participates in.
By age four, development accelerates further. The University of Washington’s Supporting Multilingual Learners resource describes children at ages 5 to 6 as having a receptive vocabulary of at least 6,000 words and an expressive vocabulary of around 2,500. They can use complex sentence structures, verb tenses, and participate in extended conversations about past and future events. Reading Rockets notes that children begin using complex sentences around ages 4 to 4½, and by kindergarten know most of the fundamentals of their language well enough to converse easily with others who share their dialect.
It is also during this period that children produce charming grammatical errors that actually reveal active rule-learning at work. Saying “I goed there” or “I see your feets” shows the child has internalized the rule for past tense and plurals – they simply haven’t learned the exceptions yet. These errors are a sign of progress, not failure.
The emergence of private speech
Around age four, a new and particularly interesting language behavior appears: children begin talking aloud to themselves. This is known as private speech – audible self-talk that is neither directed at nor intended for others. According to research published in Frontiers in Developmental Psychology, private speech is most prevalent during early childhood (ages 2-7) and serves a cognitive function rather than a communicative one.
The concept is closely associated with the psychologist Lev Vygotsky, who argued that private speech develops when children turn social speech inward to guide and control their own behavior. Wikipedia’s overview of private speech explains Vygotsky’s view: private speech serves as a transitional bridge between communicating with others and thinking for oneself. Children use it to plan, monitor, and regulate their actions – particularly during challenging tasks. A child building a block tower might narrate their steps aloud: “Now I put the big one here… now the small one on top.”
SAGE’s Encyclopedia of Human Development confirms that this self-talk is entirely normal, natural, and healthy – and that children themselves seem to sense its usefulness. As cognitive maturity develops, private speech gradually shifts inward, becoming what Vygotsky called inner speech: the silent internal dialogue that adults use for thinking and problem-solving. By the early school years, the audible self-talk largely disappears, replaced by this internalized verbal thought.
Why each stage matters
Each stage of oral language development builds on the one before it. Crying establishes that communication produces results. Cooing develops vocal muscle control and social turn-taking. Babbling expands the phonetic repertoire. First words anchor abstract sounds to real meaning. Telegraphic speech assembles words into structured communication. Expanding grammar enables nuanced expression. And private speech transforms language from a social tool into a cognitive one. Research highlights that 90% of a child’s brain develops by age 5 – the period of highest neuroplasticity – which means these early years are the most impactful window for language support and, when needed, early intervention.
For educators and caregivers, understanding these stages is not about checking boxes. It is about knowing where a child is in their journey, responding appropriately to their communication attempts, and creating environments rich with conversation, stories, and language.
