Watch a five-month-old grab the edge of a bedsheet and pull it toward her face, feel the texture, and then do it again – just because she can. Now picture a group of eight-year-olds running across a field playing tag, laughing and negotiating rules on the go. These two scenes look nothing alike, yet both are unmistakably play. So what exactly makes something “play”? The answer is less about what children are doing and more about how and why they are doing it.

Defining play: more than just “having fun”

Most people’s first instinct is to define play as anything enjoyable that children do in their free time. That’s a reasonable start, but it’s incomplete. Researchers define play as activity done for its own sake, where the process matters far more than any end result, and where children engage with flexibility, creativity, and positive emotion. The educational psychologist Elizabeth Hurlock captured this well, describing play simply as “an activity for enjoyment.” What makes her definition useful is that it shifts the focus away from the type of activity and onto the child’s experience of it.

This is an important distinction. A child stacking blocks is playing. A child stacking blocks because a teacher said “stack these in order by size and I’ll check your work” is working. The blocks are the same. The experience is not. According to the National Institute for Play, an activity stops being play the moment a non-participant directs it or overrides the child’s choices – even if the activity itself remains fun.

So how do we know when something truly qualifies as play? Four core characteristics help answer that question.

The four defining characteristics of play

1. Play is fun

This sounds obvious, but it is the most fundamental marker. Michigan State University Extension notes that when children play, they should be enjoying themselves – smiling, laughing, and showing genuine excitement. If they are not having fun, it is probably not play. This enjoyment is not a side effect of play; it is the point of it. A child quietly lining up toy cars with total absorption is having just as much fun as one shrieking while playing chase. The expression differs; the internal experience of enjoyment is the same.

This enjoyment also has a neurological basis. A clinical report from the American Academy of Pediatrics confirms that play enhances brain structure and function, promoting the development of executive function – the mental processes that help children learn, plan, and manage their behavior. When children enjoy what they are doing, their brains are primed for learning.

2. Play is its own reward

Scholarpedia’s overview of play definitions describes play as “autotelic” – a term meaning the reward is built into the activity itself. Children do not play to earn a prize or reach a goal set by someone else. They play because the playing itself is satisfying. This is what distinguishes play from most tasks adults assign to children.

Research on intrinsic motivation from Stanford’s Bing Nursery School makes this point strikingly clear. In a well-known study, children who were already motivated to draw were given an external reward for doing so. Afterward, they drew significantly less on their own than children who had received no reward. When an external incentive was introduced, it quietly undermined the children’s natural desire to engage with the activity. This is why play – precisely because it carries no external reward – is such a powerful driver of sustained engagement.

3. Play is taken seriously by children

Adults often dismiss play as “just messing around,” but children do not experience it that way. MSU Extension describes this as the “involved” quality of play – children concentrate deeply during play, just as adults concentrate during demanding work. A child building an elaborate block tower is not idling; she is problem-solving, making decisions, and investing real mental effort. When that tower falls, her frustration is genuine. Her investment in the activity is real.

This seriousness is also what makes play developmentally significant. The Encyclopedia on Early Childhood Development notes that through play, children actively test theories, try out new combinations of ideas and objects, and process what they have experienced in the world. Play is the primary way young children make sense of their environment – and they approach it with the full weight of their attention.

4. Play involves spontaneous and active participation

Genuine play is self-chosen. No one tells a child to play; the impulse arises from within. The National Institute for Play explains that when multiple children are involved, free play requires consensus – anyone participating without truly agreeing to the activity is not fully engaged and is not really playing. The moment play is directed by an external authority without the child’s genuine buy-in, it shifts into something else.

This voluntary, active quality is also tied to what researchers call intrinsic motivation – the spontaneous tendency to seek out novelty, explore, and develop skills from within, without needing external pressure or reward. Children are born with this drive. The infant exploring a bedsheet, the toddler repeatedly dropping a spoon from a high chair, the preschooler insisting on playing “shops” for the fifth time today – all of these are expressions of intrinsic motivation in action. Play is its purest form.

What makes an activity play or work? It’s not the activity itself

One of the most useful insights in understanding play is this: the same activity can be either play or work, depending entirely on how it is set up and experienced.

Consider learning about money. In a traditional classroom lesson, a teacher explains coin denominations, writes examples on a board, and asks children to complete a worksheet. The goal is fixed, the process is prescribed, and the evaluation is external. That is work. Now take the same content and set up a pretend shop – children choose what to sell, set prices, decide what to buy, and negotiate with each other. They are handling the same coins and doing the same mental arithmetic, but the experience is entirely different. The activity is now self-directed, enjoyable, and driven by the child’s own curiosity. That is play.

The Encyclopedia on Early Childhood Development distinguishes play from work precisely on this basis: work has a definite external goal, while play is focused on the means – the experience of doing – rather than the outcome. The child playing “shops” is not thinking about whether she will pass a test. She is absorbed in the game itself.

This distinction matters enormously in educational settings. Research from Stanford University shows that teachers and parents often unintentionally convert play into work – and that the longer children spend in formal school environments, the less intrinsically motivated they tend to become. The implication is not that structure is harmful, but that preserving the essential qualities of play – choice, enjoyment, internal motivation, and active engagement – within learning environments is critical for sustaining children’s natural drive to learn.

Why the organization of an activity matters more than the activity itself

This is perhaps the most practically important takeaway from understanding what play is: an activity becomes play based on how it is organized, not what it is. Running can be play (a spontaneous game of chase) or not play (mandatory laps during gym class). Drawing can be play (a child freely sketching what she imagines) or not play (copying a diagram from the board for assessment).

The National Institute for Play notes that children’s activities directed by adults can be enjoyable and even educational, but they are not fully play – because they are not self-chosen or self-directed. Some children will buy into such activities and experience them as playful; others will not. For those who do not, the developmental and learning benefits of play will not fully materialise, even if the activity looks like play from the outside.

This understanding reframes what educators and caregivers are really doing when they “plan play.” They are not designing play – they are designing conditions in which genuine play is most likely to emerge. The four characteristics – fun, self-rewarding, taken seriously, and spontaneously chosen – serve as a checklist for whether those conditions have been met.

Play across the early years: the same characteristics, different expressions

These four characteristics hold true across all ages in early childhood, though the form play takes changes considerably. Pathways.org describes how play begins in infancy as individual exploration – a baby discovering how her own body moves – and progressively becomes more social, eventually involving shared goals, negotiated rules, and cooperative effort. A five-month-old and an eight-year-old are both playing when their activity is driven by enjoyment, is its own reward, is taken seriously, and is chosen freely. The sophistication differs; the defining characteristics do not.

The American Academy of Pediatrics emphasises that play is not a luxury or a break from learning – it is how children build the social, emotional, cognitive, and language skills that underpin all future development. When play is absent, children miss the conditions under which these skills develop most naturally and effectively.

Understanding what play actually is – beyond the vague sense that it is “something children enjoy” – gives educators and caregivers a more precise and useful lens. It helps explain why a noisy, chaotic art session can be more educationally valuable than a quiet, structured worksheet. It explains why a child who resists sitting at a desk will light up when the same content is embedded in a game. And it gives a clear framework for evaluating whether what we are offering children truly qualifies as play – or whether we have inadvertently turned it into something else entirely.
