But milestones are far more than memorable moments. They are scientifically grounded markers that help us understand how children grow, learn, and progress. What are developmental milestones?
Developmental milestones are specific skills or behaviors that most children are expected to achieve within a certain age range. They cover how children play, learn, speak, act, and move. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), milestones are best described as a set of goals or markers that a child is expected to achieve during maturation – not a single moment, but a progression of abilities unfolding over time.
In child development literature, these milestones are also referred to as norms of development. The term “norm” here refers to the average or typical achievement expected for a particular age group. Developmental norms are constructed by studying large populations of children and identifying the age range within which most children acquire a given skill. It is important to understand that norms represent a range, not a single fixed point. For example, MedlinePlus notes that walking may begin as early as 8 months in some children and as late as 18 months – and both can be considered within the normal range. This is what makes milestones useful guides rather than rigid checklists.
The purpose of tracking developmental milestones
Milestones serve a clear and practical purpose: they help parents, educators, and healthcare providers assess whether a child’s development is progressing as expected. But their role goes beyond assessment. Milestones help explain children’s behavior, guide caregiving decisions, and – most critically – signal when a child may need additional support.
According to CDC’s developmental training resources, reaching milestones at typical ages shows a child is developing as expected. Reaching them earlier may indicate a child is advanced for their age. Not reaching them – or reaching them significantly later – can be the earliest sign of a developmental delay. These are referred to as developmental red flags.

Milestones are not random skills – they signify meaningful transitions. Each milestone marks a distinct change in a child’s thinking, social behavior, emotional responses, or physical abilities. Developmental norms are built through large-scale research studies that track when specific skills are attained across populations of children. Act Early.” program outlines that developmental screening tools go a step further than simple monitoring – they provide scores and risk categorizations based on established norms, enabling systematic identification of children who may need early intervention.

When milestones are missed: understanding developmental delay
Not all children who miss a milestone have a developmental disorder – temporary delays can occur during periods of illness or significant life changes, such as the arrival of a new sibling. However, consistently missing milestones across several months, or losing skills a child previously had, warrants prompt attention.
