Not too long ago, if you wanted to watch a news channel from another country or tune into a radio station broadcasting in a different language, you were largely out of luck. Traditional broadcasting kept audiences tied to geography – radio signals faded over distance, and television licenses confined broadcasts within national borders. The internet changed all of that. Through a technology called webcasting, broadcasters can now reach anyone, anywhere in the world, with a level of precision and flexibility that conventional media simply cannot match.

What is webcasting?
According to Wikipedia, a webcast is a media presentation distributed over the internet using streaming media technology, capable of delivering content from a single source to many simultaneous listeners or viewers. In simpler terms, it is “broadcasting” over the internet. Webcasting uses the internet to deliver audio and video content, making it accessible on a wide range of devices – computers, smartphones, and tablets – rather than relying on television or radio signals. The content can be delivered either as a live stream or as pre-recorded, on-demand material that viewers access whenever they choose.
The term itself blends “web” and “broadcasting,” and that combination neatly captures what the technology does: it applies the one-to-many logic of traditional broadcasting – where a single source sends content to a large audience – but over internet infrastructure instead of airwaves or cables. Webcasting is a “push” technology, meaning content is sent from a single source to multiple recipients simultaneously, much like a television or radio broadcast, but using internet protocols instead of frequency signals.
How webcasting differs from traditional broadcasting
To understand webcasting’s significance, it helps to be clear about what traditional broadcasting does and does not do. Conventional radio and television transmit signals through the airwaves or via cable and satellite infrastructure. These signals have finite range, and regulatory bodies in each country control which broadcasters can legally operate and where. The result is that most broadcast content is inherently local or regional. A television station in one country cannot simply decide to broadcast into another country without navigating a complex web of licensing agreements and regulatory permissions.
Webcasting sidesteps these constraints entirely. With webcasting, content can reach any viewer with an internet connection, regardless of their location – no special antenna, no cable subscription, no satellite dish required. Once content is published online, it is, in principle, globally accessible. This distinction has practical consequences that go well beyond convenience.
Scheduled vs. flexible access
Traditional broadcasting is built around a fixed schedule. A programme airs at a set time, and if you miss it, you miss it – unless the broadcaster happens to repeat it. Webcasting breaks this rigid structure. Unlike traditional broadcasting, which follows fixed schedules, webcasting offers both live and on-demand content options. A viewer can watch a live event as it happens, or access a recorded version days or weeks later at their own convenience. This flexibility fundamentally changes the relationship between broadcaster and audience: the audience is no longer beholden to the broadcaster’s timetable.
Reach and audience specificity
Traditional mass broadcasting is designed to reach the largest possible general audience within a given territory. It is inherently non-selective. Webcasting, by contrast, enables broadcasters to reach specific audiences rather than simply the largest possible one. A broadcaster producing content in a minority language, or covering a highly specialised subject, could never justify the cost of a conventional broadcast licence for such a small domestic audience. But if that niche audience is spread across dozens of countries, the internet aggregates them into a viable viewership. Specialised content can find sufficient audience numbers by aggregating viewers globally – something impossible through geographically bounded traditional broadcasting.
This also means that webcasting is an ideal solution for organisations looking to expand their audience, engage with international customers, or communicate with remote teams. Live and on-demand webcasting
Webcasting comes in two main forms, and understanding the distinction matters for both broadcasters and audiences.
Live webcasting
Live webcasting streams content in real time – an event is broadcast as it happens, exactly as with a live television transmission, but via the internet. In a live webcast, the online audience experiences the event as it is occurring, with all audio, video, and additional content mixed and broadcast in real time. News broadcasts, sporting events, government press conferences, and concerts are commonly delivered this way. The internet carries the signal globally and simultaneously to all connected viewers.
On-demand webcasting
On-demand webcasting makes content available after it has been recorded or broadcast live, so viewers can access it at any time of their choosing. In an on-demand webcast, the viewer decides when they are ready to watch – the content sits on a server, accessible whenever the audience wants it. This model is central to how platforms like YouTube, Netflix, and BBC iPlayer operate. It is also increasingly common for educational institutions and organisations to archive live sessions and make them available on demand, substantially extending a programme’s useful lifespan beyond its initial broadcast.
Personalized viewing and interactivity
One of the most significant departures from traditional broadcasting is the potential for a personalised viewing experience. Conventional television and radio offer the same content to every viewer simultaneously – there is no mechanism for individual customisation. Webcasting platforms, by contrast, can tailor what they show to individual users.
On-demand capabilities and mobile compatibility allow webcasts to cater to audiences who need flexible viewing options. More advanced platforms use algorithms to analyse viewing habits and recommend relevant content, so each viewer’s experience on the platform gradually reflects their own interests. Some platforms allow users to select video quality, choose from multiple camera angles during live events, or access supplementary materials alongside the main stream.
Beyond personalisation, webcasting introduces interactivity that traditional broadcasting cannot offer. Webcasting allows for two-way communication between host and audience – viewers can participate in live chats, respond to polls, and submit questions during a broadcast. This transforms the audience from passive receivers into active participants, a shift that has no equivalent in conventional radio or television.
Restricted access and subscription models
While much webcasting content is freely accessible to anyone with an internet connection, webcasting also supports restricted access – a feature completely unavailable in traditional over-the-air broadcasting, where any receiver within range can pick up a signal.
Webcasters can gate their content behind registration, password protection, or payment, allowing them to control exactly who can access what they publish. Many companies use webcasting to deliver exclusive information in a controlled way, whether to paying subscribers, registered members, or specific groups such as employees or shareholders. The models used vary considerably. A common approach is the freemium model, where basic content is freely accessible alongside advertising, while premium content sits behind a subscription paywall. Other broadcasters use tiered pricing, offering different subscription levels that unlock varying amounts of content. Pay-per-view arrangements allow one-time payments for a specific event – a live concert or sporting final, for example. There is also the option of crowdfunding, where audiences directly support creators through platforms like Patreon in exchange for exclusive access.
These models give webcasters far greater commercial flexibility than traditional broadcasting. A conventional broadcaster’s revenue is typically limited to advertising and, in some cases, retransmission fees. A webcaster can simultaneously run free ad-supported content, a subscription tier, and individual pay-per-view events – each serving a different segment of the audience.
Webcasting in education and public life
The impact of webcasting extends well beyond entertainment. In education, institutions use webcasting to extend the reach of learning – delivering live-streamed lectures, archiving recorded sessions for later study, and enabling students to participate from any location. Distance learning programmes that once depended on physical study materials or scheduled satellite broadcasts can now deliver rich, interactive content through a standard internet connection.
In public life, government bodies increasingly use webcasting to improve transparency. Court proceedings, parliament sessions, municipal council meetings, and government press conferences are now routinely webcast, allowing citizens to follow public decision-making without attending in person. This represents a meaningful shift in public access to institutions that was simply not possible through traditional broadcast infrastructure.
Why webcasting matters for broadcasters
For broadcasters, webcasting is not simply an additional distribution channel – it is a fundamentally different way of thinking about audience and reach. Traditional broadcasting required significant infrastructure investment and regulatory approval before a single viewer could be reached. Webcasting lowers those barriers considerably. Compared to traditional broadcasting, webcasts are far more accessible and affordable because content can be published anywhere online, without the need for transmitters, cable networks, or satellite uplinks.
The ability to measure exactly who is watching, for how long, and how they engage – data that traditional broadcasting cannot provide with any precision – also gives webcasters a significant advantage in understanding and serving their audiences. Advanced analytics tools can track viewership, engagement rates, and content consumption patterns, providing insights that allow broadcasters to continuously refine what they offer and how they offer it.
Perhaps most significantly, webcasting has democratised broadcasting, allowing not just established media organisations but also individuals and smaller entities to create and distribute content globally. A small production house covering a specialist subject, an independent journalist broadcasting from a remote location, or an educational institution reaching students across continents – all of these are now practical realities that webcasting has made possible.
