Every time a student opens a textbook, follows a teacher’s explanation, or takes notes during a lecture, they are drawing on a complex web of skills – skills that did not appear overnight. Reading and studying are not simple, mechanical activities. They are layered processes that involve the brain, the body, prior experience, and the social environment all working together. Understanding the nature of these skills – what they are made of, how they develop, and what it takes to truly master them – is fundamental to becoming a more effective learner.

What do we mean by a “skill”?

A skill is an ability that a person acquires over time through learning and practice. Unlike inborn traits or reflexes, skills are developed – they are not handed to us at birth. Skill acquisition specialists note that a skill is generally unknown until learned, though prior knowledge of a related ability can give a learner a head start. This means every skill has a learning curve, and that curve looks different for different people.

Reading and studying fall squarely into this category. They are acquired abilities – and complex ones at that. Research from Nigeria’s secondary school context confirms that reading is far more than decoding symbols on a page; it is a multifaceted cognitive process that encompasses understanding, critical analysis, and interpretation. Similarly, study skills involve planning, organizing information, monitoring one’s own comprehension, and persisting through difficulty.

How skills develop: socialization and self-learning

Skills don’t develop in isolation. From the moment a child begins interacting with the world around them, they start acquiring abilities through two broad channels: socialization and self-directed learning.

The role of socialization

Socialization is one of the earliest and most powerful drivers of skill development. Children observe adults, imitate behaviors, receive corrections, and gradually internalize what it means to perform a task competently. Research in cognitive psychology highlights how social learning theory explains that individuals acquire new behaviors by watching others – with attention, retention, reproduction, and motivation all playing a role in whether a skill is successfully internalized.

In educational settings, this plays out constantly. A child learns to hold a pencil by watching a teacher. A student learns to annotate texts by observing a peer. Academically related social skills – such as following instructions, asking clarifying questions, and engaging with others – function as enablers of academic achievement, directly supporting students’ ability to learn and retain information.

The role of self-learning

Alongside social input, self-directed learning is equally critical. The most natural way to acquire and enhance skills is through play and self-initiated exploration – one of the first autonomous activities humans engage in. As learners grow older, this self-directed quality becomes more conscious and deliberate. Students who set their own reading goals, reflect on how well they understood a passage, or experiment with different note-taking strategies are engaging in self-learning. This kind of autonomous engagement deepens skill ownership and builds lasting competence.

Skill acquisition researchers emphasize that the brain’s capacity to adapt and reorganize itself – known as neuroplasticity – is the biological foundation of all skill learning. Every time a student practices a new study strategy or pushes through a difficult reading passage, new neural pathways form, literally rewiring the brain for better performance.

Types of skills involved in reading and studying

Skill development in academic contexts draws on three interrelated categories: cognitive skills, motor skills, and perceptual-motor skills. Each plays a distinct role, and together they make reading and studying possible.

Cognitive skills

Cognition refers to the process in which individuals extract, process, and store information – encompassing perception, attention, memory, thinking, and imagination. These are the mental tools that allow a reader to decode words, connect ideas, make inferences, and evaluate arguments.

Reading comprehension, in particular, is a deeply cognitive activity. Prevailing theories consider reading to be a complex activity involving both cognitive and motivational dimensions, where the reader constructs meaning through an evolving process rather than simply absorbing information passively. Cognitive skills also underpin effective studying – from organizing a study schedule, to identifying key information in a chapter, to self-testing for retention.

Attention is a fundamental aspect of cognitive skill that is closely related to perception and memory. When students consciously direct their attention to a text, their perception aligns with stored knowledge – allowing for deeper comprehension. This active, selective process is what separates surface-level reading from genuine understanding.

Motor skills

Motor skills are involved in learning activities more directly than many people realize. Writing by hand, turning pages, typing notes – all of these require controlled, practiced physical movements. Fine motor writing skills play an important role in creating student learning conditions, and research has found that individuals who engage in handwriting show superior letter recognition during reading tasks compared to those who rely only on typing. This is because handwriting activates motor programs that are linked to reading performance, reinforcing the connection between physical action and cognitive recognition.

Motor learning can be broadly defined as practice-induced changes in motor performance. For students, this means that the physical fluency of writing – moving a pen smoothly across a page without consciously thinking about letter formation – improves through repetition, freeing up cognitive resources for higher-order tasks like organizing ideas or analyzing content.

Perceptual-motor skills

Perceptual-motor skills sit at the intersection of sensing and acting. Perceptual-motor skills rely heavily on the ability to interpret and respond to sensory information in real time, and are more dependent on cognitive processes such as attention, memory, and decision-making than purely automatic motor behaviors. In reading, a key perceptual-motor skill is eye movement control – the ability to track words efficiently, return to the beginning of a new line, and skip back to re-read confusing sections.

Reading requires fine motor skills controlling eye movement for word tracking, making even the act of moving one’s gaze across a page a trained perceptual-motor behavior. Students who struggle with this often find reading tiring or slow – not because they lack intelligence, but because this foundational skill has not yet been sufficiently developed.

The role of cognition in skill acquisition

Cognition doesn’t just support learning – it is central to how skills are acquired in the first place. Cognitive skill development progresses through stages marked by deliberate practice, automaticity, and superior pattern recognition. Early in skill learning, tasks demand significant conscious effort. Over time, with enough practice, those same tasks become automatic, requiring little mental effort – allowing the learner to direct attention to more complex aspects of the activity.

For example, a beginning reader must consciously decode each syllable, making comprehension difficult. A proficient reader, however, recognizes whole words instantly, freeing their cognitive bandwidth to focus on meaning, tone, and argument. As students advance in their education, they must read and write across a wide variety of disciplines with increasing skill, flexibility, and insight – requiring that foundational skills become automatic so that higher-order skills can take over.

This progression – from effortful to automatic – is not passive. It requires deliberate engagement. Skill learning refers to a slower process that results in improving the ability to perform a behavior that was not available to the learner before training. It takes time, structure, and conscious effort to move through the stages of skill acquisition.

Why practice and feedback are non-negotiable

No skill develops without practice, and practice without feedback is significantly less effective. This holds true whether we are talking about perfecting a tennis serve or learning to read critically.

The necessity of practice

An astonishing ability to acquire skills such as reading and writing is the basis of humankind’s most impressive achievements – and all of it rests on sustained practice. Practice produces measurable changes at the neurological level: repeated engagement with a task strengthens synaptic connections and builds the automaticity that marks expert performance. Research on deliberate practice – structured, goal-directed effort rather than mere repetition – consistently shows it as the most reliable path to expertise.

Throughout practice, learners discover what they can do and how they can do it to successfully reach their task-goal. This exploratory quality of practice means that students aren’t just rehearsing the same behavior – they are actively refining their approach, discovering more efficient strategies, and adapting to increasing complexity.

The power of feedback

Practice becomes far more powerful when paired with timely, specific feedback. Feedback plays a key role in guiding students to understand what they are doing well, identifying areas for improvement, and learning how to develop – whether as readers, writers, or thinkers. Without feedback, learners may practice errors repeatedly, reinforcing incorrect habits.

A large-scale meta-analysis across 435 studies confirmed a significant effect of feedback on student learning, with the strongest impact found when feedback is informative and precisely targeted to the cognitive demands of the task. Crucially, feedback works differently depending on where it is aimed: feedback focused on understanding a task, on the strategies being used, or on self-regulation produces more lasting gains than simple praise or punishment.

Teacher feedback is critical for student learning, particularly during reading, where it supports skill development and fosters students’ agency and reader identity. But feedback need not come only from teachers. Peer feedback, self-assessment checklists, and digital platforms all serve as effective vehicles – the key is that the information reaches the learner in time to influence their next attempt.

Skills as a lifelong investment

One of the most important insights about the nature of skills is that they are never fully “finished.” In today’s rapidly evolving world, the necessity of continuous skill development – often referred to as lifelong learning – cannot be overstated. Reading and study skills, in particular, must keep pace with increasingly complex academic and professional demands. A student who masters active reading strategies in school carries that competence into university, the workplace, and beyond.

In modern societies, skill learning during schooling is crucially important for matching individuals to the needs of society and the labour market, and it affects lifelong well-being and health. This underscores why building strong reading and study skills early – and continuing to refine them – is not just an academic priority, but a lifelong advantage.
