Textbooks, self-instructional modules, printed guides: these materials have delivered education to millions of learners who have never sat in a conventional classroom. But what exactly makes print such a durable and effective medium for learning? The answer lies in how print materials interact with the human mind – cognitively and emotionally – and why those interactions continue to matter even in an increasingly digital world.

Print media is not simply text on paper. It is a carefully structured, stable, and accessible form of communication that has specific properties no other medium fully replicates. Understanding these properties helps explain why print remains indispensable, particularly in contexts where learners study independently.
