Reading is one of the most fundamental skills in education – and yet, it is far more complex than it appears. Most people assume that reading is simply a matter of recognising words on a page. In reality, it involves a rich interplay of perceptual, cognitive, and emotional processes that work simultaneously to construct meaning. For teachers, students, and anyone who reads to learn, understanding how reading works – and how to do it more effectively – can make a significant difference in academic performance and lifelong learning.

Theories of reading: how we make sense of print

Scholars across psychology and education have long studied what happens in the mind when someone reads. As noted in instructional design research, reading is closely connected to many other cognitive processes including attention, concept formation, imagery, language, memory, and perception. Several major theoretical frameworks help explain this complexity.

The perceptual development theory

Gibson and Levin (1975) proposed a theory of reading grounded in principles of perceptual development. According to this framework, skilled reading involves perceiving distinctive features of letters and words, recognising invariant relations in events, building higher-order structures of meaning, abstracting essential information, filtering out irrelevant details, using peripheral vision effectively, and progressively reducing uncertainty about what is on the page. This theory highlights that reading is not passive eye movement – it is an active process of perceptual learning that develops over time and differs significantly between beginners and mature readers.

Letter-sound correspondence: the foundation of early reading

Before a reader can engage with meaning, they must first decode print. Research consistently shows that the early stages of reading depend heavily on letter-sound correspondence – the ability to connect written letters to their spoken sounds. This is the alphabetic principle, and mastering it is a pivotal milestone in literacy development.

Studies indicate that letter-sound knowledge is among the strongest predictors of later reading success, and children who fail to master these correspondences early on are at significantly higher risk of reading and writing difficulties throughout their schooling. Educational psychologist Linnea Ehri developed a four-phase model that maps this development: the pre-alphabetic phase (no letter-sound knowledge, relying on visual cues), the partial-alphabetic phase (attempting to sound out words with limited knowledge), the full-alphabetic phase (matching each letter to its sound, starting to identify sight words), and the consolidated-alphabetic phase (using chunks of letters – like recognising “unk” in “chunk” – for faster, more fluent reading).

Research from early childhood education further reinforces that children who learn letter-sound correspondences before attempting to read full words tend to achieve higher reading outcomes. Importantly, this suggests that teachers should not delay reading exposure while waiting for a child to be “ready” – structured early exposure itself builds readiness.

Cognitive theories: Piaget, Vygotsky, and schema

The cognitive stage theory of Piaget, Vygotsky’s social development theory, and Bruner’s constructivist theory are all relevant to how reading ability develops. These frameworks suggest that reading comprehension is not just about decoding symbols – it is about constructing meaning through existing knowledge structures. This is also the essence of schema theory, which explains that a text only provides directions for how readers should retrieve or construct meaning from their own background knowledge. A reader who brings richer prior knowledge to a text will comprehend it more deeply – which is why background knowledge-building is a core part of effective reading instruction.

Types of reading: purpose shapes how we read

Not all reading is done the same way. The purpose behind reading directly determines the speed, concentration, and strategy a reader should use. Understanding the different types of reading helps students make deliberate, effective choices when approaching any text.

Reading for enjoyment vs. reading for learning

When we read a novel for pleasure, the pace is fluid, the attention is relaxed, and the goal is immersion. Reading for learning, by contrast, demands deliberate engagement – slowing down at difficult passages, re-reading, questioning, and making connections. According to extensive reading research, the cognitive perspective of reading focuses on constructing meaningful messages from texts, while the affective perspective attends to the feelings and motivations of the reader. Both dimensions matter for deep learning.

Skimming and scanning

Two widely used reading strategies across academic and professional contexts are skimming and scanning. Skimming helps identify main ideas and the overall structure of a text before diving into the details, while scanning is used to quickly locate specific information within a text. These are legitimate and efficient tools – but they are not substitutes for deep reading when true understanding is required. Research by neuroscientist Maryanne Wolf found that when readers skim habitually, the brain reduces time allocated to deep reading processes – compromising the capacity to grasp complexity, reason analogically, and engage empathetically with a text.

The three dimensions of reading: cognitive, perceptual, and affective

A complete understanding of reading recognises three interacting dimensions. Each plays a distinct role in how successfully a reader processes and retains information.

The cognitive dimension

The cognitive dimension encompasses all the mental processes involved in reading: decoding words, holding information in working memory, drawing inferences, and constructing meaning. It includes what researchers call interpretive comprehension (reading between the lines to understand implied meaning), applied comprehension (connecting text to real-world situations), and critical comprehension (evaluating the logic, validity, or bias in a text). These types of comprehension align well with Bloom’s Taxonomy, progressing from basic recall and understanding to analysis and evaluation – the hallmarks of higher-order thinking.

The perceptual dimension

The perceptual dimension refers to the visual and auditory processing that underlies reading at its most fundamental level. The crossmodal integration of letters and speech sounds – linking what we see on the page to what we hear in our minds – is a key starting point toward the effective brain network that enables fluent reading. This integration is so critical that deficits in it are closely linked to dyslexia and other reading disorders. Research indicates that letter-sound elements need to be taught explicitly and practised repeatedly so that the brain transitions from effortful, controlled processing to automatic, fluent recognition – the hallmark of a skilled reader.

The affective dimension

The affective dimension of reading is often underestimated. It refers to the emotional and motivational engagement a reader brings to a text. Affective comprehension involves connecting with characters’ motivations, recognising cultural and social norms, and reflecting on how one would feel in a given situation – requiring both emotional intelligence and social awareness. This is what makes literature personally meaningful and morally instructive. Beyond fiction, motivation and attitude toward reading have a direct bearing on how much effort and attention a student invests, which in turn affects comprehension and retention.

Reading not only affects our thinking – research shows that reading helps develop empathy and improve social cognition, making us better equipped to understand others’ emotions and perspectives. This underscores why cultivating a positive attitude toward reading is as important as teaching its mechanics.

The SQ3R method: a proven strategy for reading to learn

When the goal is to read for academic learning – to actually retain and use what you read – passive reading is not enough. One of the most well-tested structured approaches is the SQ3R method. SQ3R is a study method developed on the basis of research in cognitive psychology, proposed by educational psychologist Francis P. Robinson in his book Effective Study (1946). It remains among the most widely recommended active reading strategies in universities and schools worldwide. Students who use SQ3R consistently retain more information in exams and develop better organisational skills, association ability, and critical thinking compared to passive readers.

SQ3R guides readers through five structured steps that engage the brain before, during, and after reading:

Survey

Survey involves carefully pre-reading the chapter – scanning the title, subtitles, bold and italicised text, graphs, diagrams, summaries, and end-of-chapter questions – to get a broad view of what the reading covers. This step primes the brain for what’s coming, activates prior knowledge, and helps the reader see the bigger picture before engaging with details. It should be quick and purposeful.

Question

In the Question step, readers generate questions based on their preview of the text – for example, converting headings and subheadings into direct questions. This transforms reading from a passive activity into an active search for answers. It gives the reader a clear purpose and significantly improves focus and comprehension during the actual reading.

Read

During the Read step, the reader thoroughly reads the chapter while filling in the answers to their questions. The key distinction here is to read for meaning, not just for answers. The reading portion of SQ3R is described as an active search – noting new words, pausing to think, and maintaining a clear purpose rather than passively running one’s eyes along the lines.

Recite

As readers move through the text, they should recite or rehearse the answers to their questions and make notes for later study. This means closing the book and restating what has been read in one’s own words – not copying phrases from the text. Recitation is a powerful memory tool: the act of retrieving information actively, rather than re-reading, is what cements it in long-term memory.

Review

Since the human brain forgets information very quickly, the reviewing process is most effective if it begins soon after reading. In the Review step, readers go back over their notes and the text, answer lingering questions, and consolidate what they have learned. Readers are expected to review the content by repeating back to themselves the main ideas of the text in their own words, reinforcing retention and long-term recall.

Improving reading skills: practical strategies that work

Beyond SQ3R, developing strong reading skills for learning requires consistent, purposeful habits. Here are evidence-backed approaches that complement structured reading strategies:

Build background knowledge actively. Since schema theory tells us that comprehension depends on what the reader already knows, deliberately expanding one’s knowledge base – through wide reading, discussion, and inquiry – makes every subsequent reading task easier.

Choose the right type of reading for the task. Use skimming to get an overview before a deep read. Use scanning to locate specific facts. Reserve slow, deliberate reading for complex texts where understanding and retention are the goal.

Annotate while you read. Underlining key words and sentences makes those items stand out in the mind, while marginal notes give you the opportunity to question a statement or position taken by the author. However, read a section first before marking – be selective, and only annotate what is clearly essential.

Prioritise print for deep learning. A 2024 meta-analysis of 49 studies found that students who read on paper consistently scored higher on comprehension tests than those reading the same content on screens. Digital reading tends to encourage skimming habits that reduce deep cognitive engagement. For complex academic material, print remains the better medium for sustained comprehension.

Cultivate a reading habit. Fluent reading is not an innate ability – it must be learned at school through explicit instruction and extensive practice. Regular reading, across a variety of genres and subjects, builds both decoding fluency and the broad background knowledge that underpins deep comprehension.
