Adult learners are not blank slates. They walk into learning environments with years of professional experience, personal responsibilities, and a clear expectation: what they learn must be immediately useful. Traditional content-delivery methods – where the educator speaks and the learner passively receives – often fall short of this expectation. The problem method takes a fundamentally different approach. Instead of starting with theory and hoping learners can eventually apply it, it starts with a real problem and works backward to the knowledge needed to solve it. The result is learning that is active, contextual, and directly relevant to the learner’s world.

What is the problem method?

The problem method is a teaching strategy that uses actual problems or situations as the basis for learning. Rather than delivering information through lectures or textbook readings, the educator presents learners with a meaningful problem and asks them to work through it. The goal is not necessarily to arrive at one “correct” answer, but to engage with the problem through inquiry, discussion, and critical thinking – developing the skills to analyze situations and make informed decisions. This makes the problem method especially well-suited to adult education, where learners consistently value practical, task-oriented learning that connects directly to their professional or personal circumstances.

The theoretical grounding for this approach is well-established. Malcolm Knowles, whose work on andragogy remains the cornerstone of adult learning theory, identified problem-centeredness as one of the key characteristics distinguishing adult learners from children. As Knowles observed, adults tend to be problem-centered in their orientation to learning – a reality that educators must account for when designing their classes. Unlike subject-centered learning, where knowledge is organized by topics and disciplines, problem-centered learning organizes instruction around real challenges that matter to the learner right now.

Why this method works for adult learners

Adult learners bring something to the classroom that younger students typically do not: a wealth of lived and professional experience. The problem method leverages this directly. When a learner encounters a problem drawn from a context familiar to them – say, managing a team conflict, improving a workflow, or addressing a community challenge – they are not starting from zero. 1. Problem presentation: The educator introduces a clearly defined problem that is relevant to the learners’ professional or personal context. The problem should be specific enough to be actionable but complex enough to require genuine analysis.

2. Understanding the problem: Before jumping to solutions, learners work to fully understand the problem – its scope, its causes, and its implications. This stage involves gathering relevant information, whether through discussion, research, or drawing on prior experience, to build a solid foundation for the next steps.

3. Brainstorming and discussion: Learners discuss what they have understood and generate a range of possible approaches. Good facilitation at this point ensures the group stays focused and productive without the facilitator doing the thinking for them.

5. Reflection and evaluation: After testing, learners reflect on what worked, what didn’t, and why. Constructivist approaches to adult education emphasize this cyclical process of experience, reflection, and application as central to lasting learning.

The educator’s role: facilitator, not lecturer

One of the most significant shifts the problem method demands is in the educator’s role. Rather than being the primary source of knowledge, the educator becomes a facilitator and guide. This means designing problems carefully, structuring the learning environment to support collaboration, and intervening to redirect when learners go off track – without taking over the problem-solving process itself. Evidence-based instructional approaches in adult education strongly recommend problem-centered and inquiry-based strategies precisely because they build independent thinking and lifelong learning capacity.

Second, the method develops decision-making skills. Adult learners – especially those in professional roles – face decisions with real consequences. Working through problems in a structured learning environment builds the confidence and competence to make better decisions under real-world conditions. Third, the collaborative dimension of the problem method strengthens communication and teamwork skills, which are consistently cited by employers as among the most critical competencies in the modern workplace. A study published in PMC applying Knowles’ andragogy principles to team training found that readiness to learn and problem-based orientation were the two most frequently positive themes reported by participants – underscoring how well this approach aligns with what adult learners actually value.

Challenges to consider

The problem method is not without its difficulties. The problem method is especially effective in professional development and vocational training settings, where learners are preparing to solve domain-specific problems on the job. In healthcare, social work, management, or technical fields, learners can engage with case scenarios drawn directly from practice. This creates a natural bridge between the classroom and the workplace. Andragogical approaches that incorporate real-world problem solving and iterative feedback are particularly well-suited to helping adult learners bridge the gap between practical expertise and higher-order analysis – a combination that serves both individual career development and organizational improvement.

In vocational and technical education specifically, a study published in the Journal of Adult Education noted that while instructors in these fields have done well at teaching technical content, they have been less successful at teaching adult students to become effective problem-solvers – making the deliberate use of the problem method both a gap and an opportunity in this space.
