Few countries on Earth pack as much geographical variety into a single landmass as India does. From the world’s highest mountain range in the north to coral atolls in the Arabian Sea, India’s terrain spans virtually every major landform found on the planet. This diversity is not just visually striking – it directly shapes the country’s climate, agriculture, economy, and the daily lives of over a billion people. Understanding India’s six major physiographic divisions is, in many ways, the key to understanding India itself.

What are physiographic divisions?

A physiographic division is a region defined by a shared geological origin, relief, and physical characteristics. India’s physical features are grouped into six such divisions: the Himalayan Mountains, the Northern Plains, the Peninsular Plateau, the Indian Desert, the Coastal Plains, and the Islands. Each of these regions differs from the others in terms of rock type, age, terrain, and ecological significance – and together, they form a complementary system that supports one of the world’s most complex and populous nations.

The Himalayan mountains

The Himalayas are geologically young fold mountains formed by the collision of the Indo-Australian tectonic plate with the Eurasian plate. They stretch in a west-east arc from the Indus River to the Brahmaputra, covering roughly 2,400 km, and form India’s northern and northeastern boundary. Their width ranges from about 400 km in Kashmir to 150 km in Arunachal Pradesh.

Three parallel ranges

The Himalayas consist of three parallel ranges running from north to south. The northernmost is the Himadri (Greater Himalayas), the most continuous range, with an average peak height of around 6,000 metres. It includes iconic summits like Mt. Everest and Kanchenjunga and is permanently snow-covered. South of it lies the Himachal (Lesser Himalayas), known for its rugged terrain and popular hill stations like Shimla and Darjeeling. The southernmost and youngest range is the Shiwalik, made of unconsolidated sediments with an altitude between 900-1,100 metres. The elongated valleys between the Shiwaliks and the Lesser Himalayas are called duns, with Dehradun being the most well-known.

Why the Himalayas matter

Almost all of India’s major rivers – the Indus, Ganga, and Brahmaputra – originate in the Himalayan glaciers, making the range the primary water source for hundreds of millions of people in northern India. The mountains also act as a critical climatic barrier: they intercept the summer monsoon, forcing rainfall across the subcontinent, and block cold Central Asian winds from reaching the plains in winter. The Himalayan region is also rich in minerals such as copper, lead, zinc, gold, silver, and gypsum, and its fast-flowing rivers offer enormous hydroelectric potential. Forests across the Himalayan ranges support biodiversity and supply timber, medicinal plants, and fodder for local communities.

The Northern Plains

South of the Himalayas lies one of the most fertile and densely populated regions on Earth. The Northern Plains were formed by the continuous deposition of alluvium by the Indus, Ganga, and Brahmaputra river systems in a depression that existed between the Himalayan ranges and the Peninsular Plateau. They stretch roughly 2,400 km from east to west and between 250-320 km from north to south, covering an area of about 7 lakh sq. km.

Soil types and agriculture

The plains are characterized by alluvial soil, which is among the most agriculturally productive in the world. Two distinct soil types are found here: bhangar, the older alluvium found on higher ground, and khadar, the newer and more fertile soil deposited by annual floods on the lower floodplains. The region supports cultivation of wheat, rice, sugarcane, and pulses, earning it the title of India’s “granary.” The plains are crisscrossed by a dense river network, including the Ganga, Yamuna, Ghagra, and their tributaries, which feed an extensive irrigation system. This combination of fertile soil, flat terrain, and abundant water makes the Northern Plains one of the most densely populated regions in the world.

The Peninsular Plateau

While the Himalayas and the Northern Plains are geologically young, the Peninsular Plateau is one of the oldest landmasses on Earth. It was formed from the ancient Gondwana landmass and is composed of crystalline, igneous, and metamorphic rocks, giving it a relatively stable geological character. Covering approximately 16 lakh sq. km, it forms the central and southern heartland of India.

Central Highlands and the Deccan Plateau

The plateau is broadly divided into two parts. The Central Highlands lie north of the Narmada River, encompassing the Malwa Plateau and the Chotanagpur Plateau. The Deccan Plateau lies to the south of the Narmada and is bounded by the Western Ghats on the west and the Eastern Ghats on the east. The Deccan Trap region features black basaltic soil (regur), which is ideal for cotton cultivation. The plateau’s rivers – including the Godavari, Krishna, Mahanadi, and Kaveri – flow eastward into the Bay of Bengal, creating fertile deltas along the eastern coast.

Mineral wealth

The Peninsular Plateau is a storehouse of India’s mineral resources, particularly coal, iron ore, manganese, and bauxite. The Chotanagpur Plateau is sometimes called the “Ruhr of India” for its concentration of heavy minerals. These resources have made the plateau the backbone of India’s mining and heavy industries.

The Indian Desert (Thar Desert)

To the northwest of the Aravalli Hills in Rajasthan lies the Thar Desert, also called the Great Indian Desert. It covers roughly 200,000 sq. km – about 4.5% of India’s total area – and extends into parts of Gujarat, Punjab, and Haryana, with a portion crossing into Pakistan. It is the world’s 9th largest hot subtropical desert.

Landscape and life

The desert is characterized by rolling sand dunes (barchans), salt flats, and sparse vegetation – primarily thorny shrubs and cacti. Annual rainfall is extremely low, typically below 150 mm. Despite these harsh conditions, the desert sustains a resilient population engaged in agriculture (wherever irrigation allows), animal husbandry, and handicrafts. Saltwater lakes like Sambhar Lake are a major source of salt, and the region holds deposits of gypsum, limestone, and other minerals. The Indira Gandhi Canal has transformed irrigation in parts of Rajasthan, while historic towns like Jaisalmer and Bikaner serve as important cultural and tourism centers.

The Coastal Plains

India has a coastline of over 7,500 km. The Coastal Plains are the narrow strips of land lying between the edges of the Peninsular Plateau and the sea – the Arabian Sea to the west and the Bay of Bengal to the east. Together, they stretch for about 6,000 km and are critically important for ports, trade, tourism, agriculture, and fisheries.

Western Coastal Plains

The western coast is relatively narrow, sandwiched between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea. It is divided into three sections from north to south: the Konkan Coast (Maharashtra, roughly Mumbai to Goa), the Kannad Plain (Karnataka), and the Malabar Coast (Kerala), which is wider and famous for its backwaters, lagoons, and high rainfall. The short and swift rivers of this coast flow directly into the sea, limiting delta formation but supporting dense tropical forests and plantation crops.

Eastern Coastal Plains

The eastern coast is wider and more fertile than its western counterpart. Major rivers – the Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna, and Kaveri – have built broad, flat deltas here, making the region particularly suited for rice cultivation. The Eastern Coastal Plains experience high rainfall and are among India’s most productive agricultural zones. Major ports such as Chennai, Visakhapatnam, and Kolkata drive India’s eastern maritime trade. The eastern coast is also more vulnerable to cyclones originating in the Bay of Bengal.

The Islands

India’s territory includes two distinct island groups. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal comprise about 572 islands of volcanic origin, separated into two groups by the 10ยฐ Channel. They are covered with dense tropical forests, home to rich biodiversity and indigenous tribal communities, and hold great strategic importance for India’s maritime security. The capital, Port Blair, serves as the administrative hub.

The Lakshadweep Islands in the Arabian Sea are a group of 36 small coral atolls covering just 32 sq. km. The largest island is Minicoy, and Kavaratti serves as the administrative capital. Lakshadweep is known for its coconut plantations, rich fisheries, and stunning lagoons, and is increasingly popular as an eco-tourism destination offering snorkeling, diving, and water sports.

How these features are interconnected

India’s six physiographic divisions are not isolated units – they function as parts of an integrated geographical system. The Himalayas, for instance, do far more than define India’s northern border. The Ganga and Indus rivers transport enormous quantities of silt – millions of tonnes daily – that have built and sustained the fertile Northern Plains, which in turn feed a large share of India’s population. The monsoon, shaped by the Himalayan barrier, delivers rainfall that fills rivers flowing across both the Northern Plains and the Peninsular Plateau.

The Peninsular Plateau supplies coal, iron, and bauxite that power India’s industrial economy, while the Western Ghats – a UNESCO World Heritage Site and major biodiversity hotspot – regulate rainfall patterns for both the plateau and the coastal plains. The Coastal Plains and Islands anchor India’s maritime economy: major ports handle international trade, fishing communities sustain food supply chains, and growing tourism sectors generate livelihoods. Even the Thar Desert, often perceived as barren, plays a role in India’s mineral economy and cultural heritage. Every physiographic region contributes something distinct – and each depends, in some way, on the others.
