Think back to a social science class that genuinely held your attention – one where you walked out understanding something about the world more clearly. Now think about the ones that didn’t. In most cases, the difference wasn’t the subject itself. It was how it was taught. History, economics, geography, political science – these subjects explain the very fabric of human society. Yet, they are also among the most commonly cited as “boring” by students. The reason, more often than not, comes down to a narrow and repetitive approach to instruction. This is precisely why the need for diverse and effective teaching-learning strategies in social sciences is not just a pedagogical preference – it is an educational necessity.

The problem with a one-size-fits-all approach

Social sciences cover an incredibly broad range of human experience. A lesson on the French Revolution, the mechanics of inflation, or the causes of caste discrimination all demand different cognitive processes from students – analysis, empathy, critical reasoning, and contextual thinking. Without a variety of instructional approaches, that depth of engagement simply does not happen for many learners.

What Woolever and Scott’s research tells us

One of the most cited pieces of evidence on this issue comes from Woolever and Scott’s 1988 study, Active Learning in Social Studies: Promoting Cognitive and Social Growth. Their research found that social studies teachers, when left to their own habits, tend to use only a limited number of teaching strategies – and that students find this repetitive approach boring. The boredom, they argued, could be directly addressed if teachers moved beyond large-group lectures and discussions to incorporate a genuine variety of techniques.

This finding was significant not just because it named a problem, but because it pointed to a clear solution. The issue was not that students didn’t care about social sciences. It was that the narrow range of instructional methods failed to stimulate their interest or meet their varied learning needs. Students became disengaged, and over time, their performance and retention suffered as a result.

Research in educational psychology further supports this concern. Studies on classroom boredom indicate that bored students are at a higher risk of poor grades, disengagement, and even absenteeism. Boredom is not a minor inconvenience – it directly impairs a student’s cognitive and metacognitive potential. For social science teachers, this makes the case for methodological diversity impossible to ignore.

Why variety in teaching strategies matters

Variety in teaching-learning strategies does more than just keep students entertained.   • Different learning styles are addressed, ensuring that visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners all have access to the material in a way that works for them.

Understanding diverse learning styles in the social science classroom

To appreciate why varied strategies are needed, it helps to understand how differently students learn. The widely used VARK model identifies four primary learning preferences: visual, auditory, reading/writing, and kinesthetic. In a typical social science classroom, all four types will be present simultaneously.

Visual learners

What makes a teaching-learning strategy effective in social sciences?

Strategies that require students to do something – discuss, question, research, debate, create – are far more effective than those in which students passively receive information. Presenting the same concept through different formats – a written account, a visual source, an oral discussion, and a hands-on activity – reinforces understanding from multiple angles. Interactive elements like clickable maps, infographics, primary source documents, and video all offer students different cognitive handles on the same content, making it more likely to be understood and remembered.

Inquiry-based thinking

Effective social science teaching encourages students to ask questions, investigate evidence, and form conclusions – rather than simply receive answers. Moving beyond the lecture: practical examples of diverse strategies

What does this actually look like in practice? A few examples illustrate how moving away from lecture-only instruction can transform a social science lesson.

Collaborative learning – Dividing students into small groups to analyse a primary source document, such as a historical speech or a government policy excerpt, encourages peer discussion, shared reasoning, and diverse interpretations. It mirrors the way social scientists actually work.

Case studies – Rather than abstractly explaining the concept of economic disparity, a teacher might present a real case study from a specific country or region and ask students to identify causes and propose solutions. This grounds abstract theory in tangible reality.

Project-based learningProject-based learning involves students in long-term, interdisciplinary work that requires multiple skills to address complex real-world problems. A project on local governance, climate policy, or historical injustice asks students to research, analyse, and present – all higher-order thinking tasks.

Role-play and simulation – Students assigned roles in a mock parliament debate or a historical reenactment are not just learning facts; they are building empathy, perspective-taking, and civic awareness – all core outcomes of social science education.

Use of primary sources – Analysing first-hand documents like diaries, photographs, maps, or legislative records gives students a direct encounter with evidence. Primary sources provide a unique window into the past and help students develop the skills of historical inquiry and interpretation rather than simply reading someone else’s conclusions.

The teacher’s role in strategy selection

The responsibility for selecting appropriate strategies rests with the teacher. This requires not just knowledge of different methods, but the professional judgement to match methods to content, context, and learners. A teacher planning a unit on urbanisation, for instance, might begin with a visual mapping exercise, move into a class discussion of local examples, assign a small-group case study analysis, and conclude with an individual written reflection. Each phase serves a different purpose and reaches a different type of learner.

As Woolever and Scott’s research makes clear, the instinct to default to familiar, comfortable methods is strong – but it comes at a cost to students. Professional development, curriculum design, and teacher training must all prioritise the expansion of instructional repertoires so that social science teaching fulfils its genuine potential.

The National Council for the Social Studies expects teachers to draw on a broad toolkit of methods – from inquiry and discussion to primary source analysis and technology integration – to give students rich, varied, and challenging learning experiences. Meeting that standard is what separates a forgettable lesson from one students actually carry with them.
