Every time a student accepts that the Earth revolves around the Sun, or a teacher explains why a historical event unfolded the way it did, a philosophical question quietly operates in the background: What does it actually mean to know something? This question sits at the heart of epistemology – the branch of philosophy dedicated to examining the nature, sources, methods, validity, and limits of human knowledge. For educators and students alike, grasping the concept of knowledge is not just an academic exercise. It shapes how we approach teaching, learning, evidence, and truth itself.

What is epistemology?

Epistemology, derived from the Greek words episteme (knowledge) and logos (study or science), is the philosophical inquiry into what knowledge is, how we acquire it, and how far it can extend. As the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy describes it, epistemologists concern themselves with two broad questions: the nature of knowledge – what it means to say someone knows something – and the extent of human knowledge – how much we can actually know, and whether there are things we cannot know at all.

These are not abstract puzzles confined to university seminars. In classrooms, curricula, and everyday teaching decisions, we are constantly making judgments about what counts as reliable knowledge, what sources of information are credible, and what degree of evidence is sufficient. Epistemology provides the philosophical grounding for all of these judgments.

Historical roots: from ancient Greece to modern philosophy

Early reflections on the nature and sources of knowledge go back to ancient Greek philosophy. Plato (427-347 BCE) was among the first to systematically examine what distinguishes knowledge from mere opinion. He explored how knowledge is anchored in reason rather than just observation, a question that would fuel centuries of philosophical debate. Later, the competing traditions of rationalism (which holds that certain knowledge comes through reason alone) and empiricism (which holds that knowledge comes from sensory experience) shaped modern epistemology profoundly. Philosophers like Descartes, Locke, Hume, and eventually Kant all contributed to sharpening our understanding of what knowledge is and where it comes from.

Understanding this history matters in education because the way we define knowledge determines what we teach, how we assess it, and how we expect students to engage with information.

The classical definition: knowledge as justified true belief

The most widely accepted and discussed definition of knowledge in Western philosophy is that knowledge is justified true belief, often abbreviated as JTB. According to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy’s analysis of knowledge, this tripartite account holds that a person S knows a proposition P if and only if: P is true, S believes that P, and S is justified in believing P. Each of these conditions is necessary; none alone is sufficient.

This definition, rooted in Platonic thought and systematized in 20th-century analytic philosophy, gives us a structured way to evaluate claims to knowledge. It moves us beyond casual uses of the word “know” – where someone might say “I knew it would rain” even when it didn’t – toward a more precise, philosophically rigorous standard.

The condition of belief

Knowledge requires belief. This is the first and most basic condition. You cannot know something you do not believe. If someone tells you that Paris is the capital of France and you refuse to accept it, you cannot be said to know it. Belief is the psychological state of accepting a proposition as true.

However, belief alone is clearly not enough. People hold all sorts of beliefs – about the supernatural, about luck, about unverified claims – that we would not ordinarily call knowledge. A person might believe, strongly, that a certain lottery ticket will win, but that belief, however sincere, is not knowledge. So belief is a starting point, not a destination.

The condition of truth

For a belief to qualify as knowledge, it must be true. Most epistemologists agree that what is false cannot be known. If someone “knows” that a friend is in the next room, but the friend has actually left, that person does not know – they only believed. Truth is an objective condition: it holds independently of what any individual thinks or feels about it.

In educational contexts, this is a critical point. The information students receive through textbooks, lectures, and media must correspond to reality. Truth is not simply a matter of consensus or popularity. The Earth orbited the Sun even when most people believed otherwise. This objective dimension of truth is what gives education its responsibility to be grounded in evidence, research, and verified facts.

The condition of justification

The third and most complex condition is justification. Even if a belief is true, it does not count as knowledge if it was arrived at by accident, guesswork, or faulty reasoning. Justification means the believer has adequate evidence or sound reasons for holding the belief.

Consider the statement: “Water boils at 100ยฐC at sea level.” This is true, and most people believe it. But what makes it knowledge rather than mere belief is the body of experimental evidence that supports it – centuries of scientific observation and verification. As Plato’s epistemological formulation captures it, knowledge requires that a belief be both justifiable and true. Without justification, even a lucky true belief would not constitute knowledge.

In teaching, this is why we ask students not just for answers, but for reasoning. Showing your work in mathematics, citing sources in an essay, or explaining your hypothesis in science – all of these are demands for justification. They reflect a deep epistemic commitment: that knowing requires more than being right.

Types of knowledge: propositional, procedural, and acquaintance

Not all knowledge is the same kind. Epistemologists distinguish between several types. Propositional knowledge (knowing that something is the case, such as “the square root of 81 is 9”) is the primary focus of epistemology. Procedural knowledge or know-how (knowing how to ride a bicycle or play an instrument) involves skills rather than facts. Acquaintance knowledge involves being familiar with something or someone through direct experience.

In educational philosophy, propositional knowledge has traditionally been treated as the central goal of schooling. But increasingly, educators and philosophers recognise that procedural and acquaintance knowledge are equally valuable – and that the three types often reinforce each other. A student who only knows facts about a historical period in propositional form, without any experiential or skills-based engagement, has a limited and brittle understanding.

Sources of knowledge

Where does knowledge come from? Epistemologists identify several key sources of justification: perception, introspection, memory, reason, and testimony. Each plays a distinct role in building what we know.

Perception

Perception – what we observe through our senses – is among the most immediate sources of knowledge. We know the sky is cloudy by looking at it; we know fire is hot by feeling it. However, perception, like any source of knowledge, must be causally connected with its objects. Illusions, hallucinations, and distortions show that perception can mislead us, which is why it must be paired with critical reflection rather than accepted uncritically.

Reason

Some knowledge is accessible through reason alone, independently of experience. This is what philosophers call a priori knowledge. Mathematical truths – that the angles of a triangle sum to 180ยฐ, for instance – do not require us to measure every triangle in existence. They follow from definitions and logical relationships. Rationalists have long argued that reason is the most reliable source of knowledge precisely because it is not dependent on the variability of sensory experience.

Testimony

So much of what we know about the world – history, science, geography, events we have never witnessed – comes from the testimony of others. In classrooms, testimony is the primary vehicle through which knowledge is transmitted from teacher to student. This makes the epistemic trustworthiness of sources a matter of genuine concern: not all testimony is equally reliable, and evaluating the credibility of what we are told is a core intellectual skill.

Memory and introspection round out the picture, allowing us to retain knowledge across time and to access our own inner states. Together, these sources form an interconnected system through which human knowledge is built, checked, and extended.

The limits of justified true belief: the Gettier problem

The JTB definition of knowledge dominated philosophical thinking for decades. But in 1963, philosopher Edmund Gettier published a brief but enormously influential paper challenging it. Gettier provided examples where a person had a true and justified belief but where we intuitively want to deny that the person actually knew – because luck played too large a role in the belief turning out to be true.

A classic illustration: imagine a clock on a university campus that has always been accurate and well maintained. Unknown to you, it stopped exactly twelve hours ago. You glance at it and see it reads 11:56 – and indeed, it happens to be exactly 11:56. Your belief is true, and it is justified (you have every reason to trust the clock). Yet most people would say you do not truly know the time, because you arrived at the correct belief through what is essentially a lucky coincidence. In none of these Gettier-type cases do almost all epistemologists regard the belief as genuine knowledge.

This has driven philosophers to seek stronger or additional conditions for knowledge beyond the original three. Some propose a “no false belief” condition; others add a “no defeaters” condition, meaning there should be no hidden facts that would undermine the justification. Still other philosophers, such as Alvin Goldman, developed reliabilism – the view that knowledge requires beliefs formed through reliably truth-conducive cognitive processes, shifting the focus from internal justification to the reliability of the mechanism that produced the belief.

Why the concept of knowledge matters in education

The philosophical analysis of knowledge is not a purely theoretical exercise – it has direct implications for educational practice. How we define knowledge determines what we consider worth teaching, how we expect students to demonstrate understanding, and what counts as adequate evidence in academic work.

When teachers demand that students provide reasons for their answers, they are enacting the justification condition. When curricula are updated to reflect scientific consensus, they are enacting the truth condition. When students are encouraged to question sources and evaluate evidence critically, they are being trained to think epistemologically – to ask not just “what do I believe?” but “is this belief justified, and is it actually true?”

Philosophers of education have explored how different accounts of the epistemic aims of education lead to very different approaches to what and how we teach. Whether the goal is to transmit propositional knowledge, develop intellectual virtues, or cultivate critical reasoning, the underlying concept of knowledge quietly shapes every decision.

Understanding epistemology also helps educators and students become more discerning consumers of information – a skill that has never been more important than in today’s environment of abundant but uneven information. Knowing the difference between a belief, a justified belief, and knowledge is not just philosophical hair-splitting. It is a practical guide to intellectual integrity.
