How does a civilization build its entire intellectual tradition on two seemingly different foundations – divine revelation and human reason – and make them work together seamlessly? In Islamic thought, this is not a paradox but a defining feature. The corpus of Islamic knowledge has historically been shaped by two primary modes of communicating knowledge: prophetic revelation (waแธฅy) and rational empirical exploration. Understanding how these two modes function, and how they complement each other, is central to understanding Islamic epistemology and its remarkable contribution to world civilization.

What does “modes of communicating knowledge” mean in Islam?

In Islamic intellectual tradition, knowledge (สฟilm) is not a single-channel enterprise. Islamic epistemology addresses the reality of knowledge, its sources, aims, objectives, types, and limits – a framework that is both comprehensive and deeply ethical. At its core, two primary channels were recognized: knowledge that descends from God through His chosen messengers, and knowledge that human beings generate through observation, reason, and inquiry. These are not competing channels. Rather, they are understood as complementary pathways to truth, both ultimately originating from the same divine source.

According to scholars at the International Islamic University Malaysia, Islamic knowledge broadly divides into two categories: revealed knowledge from divine books – with the Qur’an as the final and most authoritative – and empirically acquired knowledge through which human beings understand the material and physical world as stewards of the earth. Both are considered necessary for living a complete life as servants and vicegerents of God.

The first mode: Prophetic revelation (waแธฅy)

Prophetic revelation is the foundation upon which all Islamic knowledge rests. In Islamic belief, waแธฅy refers to God’s word delivered through chosen messenger-prophets to humankind. The Qur’an is the primary and most complete instance of this – considered by Muslims to be the literal word of God revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. The Hadith, the recorded sayings and practices of the Prophet, forms the second layer of revealed knowledge, transmitted through carefully verified chains of narrators across generations.

What sets prophetic knowledge apart from all other forms is its nature: it is direct, absolute, and not subject to the limitations of human cognition. As scholars of Islamic epistemology note, God’s act of self-revelation to humankind through chosen prophets is the crux of prophetic epistemology in Islam. Human cognitive faculties – whether sensory experience, rational reasoning, or intuition – are all subject to limitation and fallibility. Prophetic revelation transcends these limitations precisely because it originates outside the human capacity for error.

Waแธฅy as a source of knowledge – not just guidance

It is important to understand that waแธฅy in Islam is not merely a moral or spiritual guide. It is treated as an epistemic source – a means of knowing reality. According to a study on Qur’anic epistemology, revelation is direct communication between Allah and humankind through His prophets, and it serves to guide the mind so as not to get lost in rational speculation without direction. The Qur’an itself, from its very opening verses (Surah Al-‘Alaq 1-5), affirms that true knowledge originates from God.

Egypt’s Dar Al-Ifta describes this revealed knowledge (naql) as inherited through generations, transmitted from one person to another through solid chains of transmission – it cannot be attained through empirical observation, theoretical reasoning, or deduction alone. Those who transmitted it affirmed its holy origin while retaining the right to use their rational faculties to understand and explain it. This careful mode of transmission – especially of the Hadith – gave rise to the sophisticated Islamic science of isnad (chain of narration), one of the most rigorous systems of historical verification in the pre-modern world.

The second mode: Rational empirical exploration

The second major mode of communicating and generating knowledge in Islam is rational empirical inquiry – the use of reason (สฟaql) and sensory experience (แธฅawฤss) to understand the world. Far from being in tension with revelation, this mode of knowing is actively encouraged by the Qur’an itself. Verses across the Qur’an call on believers to observe, reflect, and reason – using the natural world as a field of divine signs (ฤyฤt).

As documented by Islam and Science, the Qur’an describes a threefold faculty of knowing in human beings: hearing (as-samสฟ), which involves accepting and obeying textual knowledge from the Qur’an and Sunnah; sight (al-baแนฃar), which involves pondering and reflecting upon phenomena and is closely related to rational inquiry; and inner vision (al-baแนฃฤซrah), associated with spiritual unveiling granted by God. Together, these three pathways make rational-empirical exploration not just permissible but spiritually mandated.

Observation, rationality, and verification

The rational empirical mode in Islamic scholarship operated through three interconnected principles. Observation meant that empirical evidence gathered through the senses forms the legitimate basis of knowledge about the natural world. Rationality meant that logical reasoning is then used to make sense of observations and derive conclusions. Verification meant that repeated experimentation and proof were essential to establish the reliability of findings. This framework is strikingly close to what modern science recognizes as the scientific method.

The Qur’anic call to observe the cosmos as divine signs gave rise to the development of natural sciences such as astronomy, medicine, and physics in Islamic civilization – all grounded in the belief that nature is God’s creation and studying it is an act of worship. The spirit of empirical inquiry that this produced was not incidental; it was theologically motivated.

Key thinkers who embodied rational empirical inquiry

Several towering figures of the Islamic Golden Age exemplified this mode of knowing. Ibn al-Haytham (Alhazen), working in the 11th century, conducted precise optical experiments and corrected centuries-old misconceptions about vision, laying the groundwork for later European scientists. Ibn Sina (Avicenna) systematized medicine through careful empirical observation and theoretical synthesis in his Canon of Medicine, which remained a standard reference in both the Islamic world and medieval Europe. Ibn Khaldun, writing in the 14th century, applied empirical observation to human societies, producing a sociological and historical framework in his Muqaddimah that has been compared to modern social sciences. Scholars of Falsafa – the Arabic philosophical tradition – including Al-Kindi, Al-Farabi, and Avicenna, also fused Aristotelian logic and Neoplatonism with Islamic thought, developing sophisticated systems of epistemology that integrated reason with faith.

The harmony between revelation and reason

What makes Islamic epistemology distinctive is not that it had two modes of knowledge, but that it insisted on their harmony. As Professor Nazeer Ahmed writes, the Qur’anic perspective integrates the physical, the rational, and the emotive by asserting their common origin and functionality – each mode of knowing springs from the spirit (rลซแธฅ) and is a Divine gift. Science, history, and faith are not antagonists; they are complementary paths that lead toward the same truth.

Al-Ghazali (1058-1111) is often cited as the scholar who most carefully navigated this relationship. Muslim philosophers sought to harmonize reason and revelation – Al-Ghazali reconciled theology with philosophy, demonstrating that spiritual insight complements rational investigation rather than contradicts it. His work set out to prevent philosophy from becoming disconnected from revelation, while equally preventing theology from dismissing the legitimate insights of reason.

As Dar Al-Ifta notes, one of the singular distinctions of Islam is the balance maintained between สฟaql (rational thought) and naql (revealed scripture). Scholars across the tradition took different positions – from those who heavily privileged reason, to those who anchored firmly in revelation – but the mainstream tradition always sought a synthesis, not a separation.

The House of Wisdom and the institutionalization of knowledge

The practical expression of these two modes of knowledge came together most visibly in institutions. The House of Wisdom (Bayt al-แธคikmah) in Baghdad was a major Abbasid-era public academy and intellectual centre, turned into a full public library and research institution during the reign of Caliph Al-Maสฟmun (813-833 CE). It became the hub where prophetically rooted Islamic learning was combined with translated Greek, Persian, Indian, and Syriac texts – making it a site where revealed knowledge and rational inquiry were actively synthesized.

According to Islamic History, Caliph Al-Maสฟmun was reportedly reassured by a dream in which Aristotle told him there was no conflict between reason and revelation – after which he launched the systematic translation project that powered the House of Wisdom. Whether the story is literal or symbolic, it captures the spirit of the institution: that rational inquiry and divine guidance were not in opposition. The House of Wisdom influenced the European Renaissance through the transmission of translated and enhanced texts via Islamic Spain and Sicily, providing the intellectual foundations that later figures like Copernicus and Galileo would build upon.

Legacy and educational implications

The two modes of communicating knowledge in Islam – prophetic revelation and rational empirical inquiry – left an enduring mark on the structure of education in the Islamic world and beyond. The madrasa system, which formed the backbone of formal Islamic education, organized its curriculum to include both revealed sciences (สฟulลซm naqliyya), such as Qur’anic studies, hadith, and jurisprudence, and rational sciences (สฟulลซm สฟaqliyya), such as philosophy, mathematics, and medicine. Scholars often moved fluidly between roles as theologians, jurists, physicians, and astronomers, reflecting a relatively integrated vision of knowledge in which the two modes were not compartmentalized.

The emphasis on verification and observation within the rational-empirical tradition contributed to the development of the scientific method, while the ethical and moral framework provided by revelation ensured that knowledge remained purposive – not merely instrumental. In this way, the Islamic tradition modeled something that modern education still struggles with: how to combine the pursuit of factual knowledge with a clear sense of moral purpose.
