Why message designing matters for video

Video is unique among instructional media because it combines multiple channels-visual, auditory, and sometimes textual-simultaneously. This makes it powerful but also risky. If these elements aren’t coordinated, they can overwhelm the viewer instead of helping them learn. The temporal contiguity principle says that related narration and visuals should appear at the same time, not one after the other. Extraneous load is the wasted effort caused by poor design-confusing layouts, irrelevant animations, narration that doesn’t match the visuals. This is entirely under the designer’s control and should be minimised ruthlessly.

Generative load is the productive effort of actually learning-selecting important information, organising it into mental models, and integrating it with prior knowledge. Good message designing minimises extraneous load so that more of the learner’s cognitive capacity is available for this generative processing.

Pre-training: setting the stage for understanding

Mayer’s pre-training principle is particularly relevant for educational videos covering complex or technical subjects. This principle holds that learners perform better when they already understand basic terminology and foundational concepts before encountering the main lesson. In practice, this might mean including a brief introductory segment at the start of the video that defines key terms, or providing a separate “primer” video that viewers watch first. By activating prior knowledge, you reduce the intrinsic load during the main content and free up cognitive resources for deeper understanding.

Practical tips for effective video message design

To pull everything together, here are actionable guidelines that integrate the research and principles discussed above:

Keep it focused. One video, one learning objective. If the topic requires multiple objectives, create a series of short videos rather than one long one.

Script the narration first. Write a conversational script before creating any visuals. This ensures the message drives the design, not the other way around.

Storyboard before you record. Map out what the viewer will see and hear at each point. This is where spatial contiguity, temporal contiguity, and signalling get planned-not improvised during editing.

Eliminate the unnecessary. Review every visual, sound effect, and text element. If it doesn’t directly support the learning objective, remove it.
