Not long ago, a student who needed information for a school project had to visit the library, flip through physical encyclopedias, and hope the relevant book wasn’t already checked out. Today, that same student can access thousands of peer-reviewed articles, watch explanatory videos, join live virtual classes, and download free textbooks – all within minutes, from any device. The internet hasn’t just made education more convenient; it has fundamentally changed what learning looks like, who can access it, and how much it costs. Here’s a closer look at the four key benefits that make the internet one of the most powerful tools in modern education.

Instant access to knowledge

Before the internet, students were largely dependent on whatever was available in their school or local library. That constraint is now gone. Research by the Pew Research Center found that 94% of teenagers with internet access use it for school research, and 71% of online teens used it as their primary source for a major school project or report. Those figures reflect a straightforward reality: the internet puts a vast, continuously updated body of knowledge directly in students’ hands.

What makes this particularly valuable is the currency of online information. Unlike printed textbooks, which can be years out of date by the time they reach a classroom, online resources are updated in real time. Students researching climate science, current events, or medical developments can access the latest findings rather than relying on information that may be outdated. The Internet Society notes that instead of relying primarily on textbooks, teachers can direct students to multiple different sources, and students can develop research skills by exploring online content on their own – a shift that builds critical thinking alongside content knowledge.

Beyond formal academic sources, students also benefit from vast digital libraries, academic databases, and open repositories that were previously accessible only to university researchers. The ability to cross-reference multiple sources, verify claims, and explore topics in depth has raised the quality ceiling for student learning considerably.

Interactive and engaging learning experiences

Access to information is only part of what the internet offers. Equally important is the shift toward interactive, multimedia-based learning that goes well beyond reading text on a screen. Educational platforms now deliver content through videos, animations, virtual simulations, and gamified lessons that actively involve students rather than simply presenting information at them.

The role of multimedia content

A peer-reviewed study published in Frontiers in Psychology highlighted how internet-based education allows students to engage with material in short, frequent episodes – a method that produces better long-term retention compared to concentrated, infrequent study sessions. Video content in particular has become a cornerstone of online learning; platforms like YouTube host thousands of tutorials covering everything from basic algebra to advanced anatomy, providing alternative explanations that help students who didn’t grasp a concept the first time around in class.

Gamification and student motivation

Gamification – the use of game design elements like points, badges, and leaderboards in non-game contexts – has emerged as a particularly effective internet-based strategy. A meta-analysis published in Frontiers in Psychology covering 41 studies and more than 5,000 participants found a significant positive effect of gamification on learning outcomes across various educational settings. Platforms like Kahoot!, Duolingo, and Khan Academy embed these elements directly into their learning flows, making practice feel less like a chore and more like a challenge worth completing. A randomized controlled trial published in JMIR Serious Games found that students taught through gamified methods scored noticeably higher than those receiving conventional instruction, with the gamified group achieving a mean score of 21.00 compared to 15.87 in the control group.

Interactive learning also supports students with different learning styles. A student who struggles to absorb information from reading alone may find that a well-designed simulation or an animated walkthrough makes the same concept immediately clear. The diversity of formats available online means that learning can be adapted to individual needs in ways that a single printed textbook simply cannot match.

Remote education and inclusivity

One of the most transformative benefits of the internet in education is its capacity to remove geography as a barrier. A student in a rural area without access to specialist teachers, a working adult who cannot attend classes during business hours, or a learner in a country with limited educational infrastructure – all of these individuals now have access to quality education that would previously have been out of reach.

The eLearning Industry notes that internet-based learning offers flexibility, allowing learners to access educational content at any time and from anywhere, accommodating diverse schedules and preferences. This flexibility proved especially critical during the COVID-19 pandemic, when schools worldwide shifted abruptly to remote learning. The experience demonstrated both the internet’s capacity to sustain education under extreme circumstances and the urgency of expanding reliable internet access to underserved populations.

UNICEF research reinforces this point, finding that children who participate in a wider range of online activities develop stronger digital skills – a set of competencies that are increasingly essential in the modern workforce. The implication is clear: internet access is not just about convenience; it directly shapes a student’s future readiness. Distance education also enables students to enroll in courses offered by institutions worldwide, breaking down the walls between local and global education systems and exposing learners to a much wider range of expertise and perspectives.

For teachers, remote platforms also open up professional development opportunities. Educators in areas with limited training infrastructure can access workshops, webinars, and certification courses online, improving the quality of instruction even in underserved regions.

Cost-effective resources through open educational resources (OER)

Education has always come with a price tag, but the internet has introduced a powerful counterweight to rising costs through Open Educational Resources (OER). UNESCO defines OER as learning, teaching, and research materials available under open licenses that permit free access, reuse, adaptation, and redistribution. In practice, this means free textbooks, lecture notes, videos, and full courses that anyone with an internet connection can use.

Why OER matters for students

The financial impact of traditional educational materials is significant. According to AACSB, postsecondary students in the United States spend between $628 and $1,200 annually on textbooks and related resources – a cost that creates real barriers to access, particularly for students from lower-income backgrounds. OER eliminates this expense entirely for digital access. Research cited by UMass Amherst shows that 93% of students who use OER perform as well or better than those using traditional commercial materials, addressing concerns that free resources might compromise quality.

The scale of OER adoption is growing. The Internet Society highlights that Open Educational Resources and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) make course materials from one country available to students in another, supplementing local resources and extending both the range and quality of materials accessible to students worldwide. Platforms like MIT OpenCourseWare, OpenStax, and Coursera have made university-level content freely available to anyone with an internet connection, effectively democratizing access to high-quality instruction.

OER and equity in education

The equity implications of OER are particularly significant. Research from Old Dominion University found that OER adoption not only reduced student debt but also led to better end-of-course grades and lower withdrawal rates – with the most pronounced gains among Pell Grant recipients, part-time students, and historically underserved populations. This suggests that free, openly licensed resources don’t just save money; they actively help close achievement gaps that have long been tied to economic inequality.

UNESCO’s formal endorsement of OER through the 2019 Recommendation on OER, and the subsequent Dubai Declaration adopted at the 3rd UNESCO World OER Congress in November 2024, reflect growing global recognition that open educational resources are a strategic tool for building more inclusive and equitable education systems worldwide.
