In any classroom, the goal is the same: every student should be able to learn, participate, and express themselves. But for students with disabilities – whether they have dyslexia, autism spectrum disorder, motor impairments, or hearing loss – traditional teaching methods often fall short. This is where Information and Communication Technology (ICT) steps in as a genuine equalizer. Research published in Frontiers in Education confirms that digital tools and specialized technologies facilitate equitable access to learning for students with diverse needs. Three ICT tools in particular – digital textbooks and eBooks, digital storytelling, and platforms like VoiceThread and digital posters – are reshaping what participation looks like in an inclusive classroom.

Digital textbooks and eBooks: the same content, accessible to all
One of the most immediate barriers students with disabilities face is access to learning materials. A printed textbook cannot adjust its font size, read itself aloud, or offer a video explanation of a difficult concept. Digital textbooks and eBooks can do all of this – and more.
UNICEF’s Accessible Digital Textbooks for All initiative was built precisely on this insight. It aims to develop digital tools with accessibility features that enable all children – with and without disabilities – to learn in the same classroom. The initiative is anchored in the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), which calls for content to be presented in multiple formats so that every learner, regardless of ability, can engage with it.
In practice, this means a student with low vision can enlarge the text or switch to a high-contrast display. A student who struggles with reading can activate text-to-speech and have the content read aloud in real time. According to a UNESCO report on technology for inclusion, digital materials provide accessibility to students with print disabilities and allow them to review content wherever and whenever they need to – at their own pace, as many times as required.
Text-to-speech and adjustable features
For students with dyslexia or reading difficulties, text-to-speech (TTS) functionality is particularly impactful. Tools like JAWS (Job Access With Speech) and NVDA (Non-Visual Desktop Access) read digital text aloud, allowing students with visual impairments or reading disabilities to access written content independently. Research on ICT in inclusive settings shows that when a student with dyslexia uses TTS software, their comprehension of written material improves significantly – not because the content is simplified, but because the format has changed to suit them.
Beyond TTS, digital textbooks offer adjustable font sizes, customizable colour schemes, embedded dictionaries, interactive quizzes, and hyperlinked multimedia. A UNESCO GEM Report advocacy brief notes that digitizing textbooks makes them substantially more accessible, pointing out that over 92 countries have ratified the 2013 Marrakech Treaty, which allows the reproduction of published works in accessible formats for people who are blind, visually impaired, or otherwise print-disabled. This legal framework underlines how seriously the global community takes digital access to education.
Crucially, none of these adaptations require a student to use a different textbook from their peers. They access the same content – just in a format that works for them. That sense of equality matters enormously in an inclusive classroom.
Digital storytelling: expression beyond the written word
Ask a student with dyslexia, motor impairment, or a language processing difficulty to write a two-page essay, and the task may feel insurmountable – not because they have nothing to say, but because the medium itself is a barrier. Digital storytelling removes that barrier by letting students build narratives using images, audio, video, and text in combination.
Digital storytelling is the practice of creating short, multimedia narratives using digital tools. In an educational context, it asks students to communicate what they have learned – or what they feel – through a format they can shape themselves. Writing in ASCD’s Educational Leadership, educator and author Michael Hernandez notes that unlike essays or reports, digital storytelling allows students to choose how they demonstrate their learning. Students with learning disabilities who struggle with written assignments, and shy or socially challenged students who stumble in class presentations, find that digital storytelling lets them leverage their strengths instead.
Why it works for students with special educational needs
For students on the autism spectrum, the benefits are particularly well-documented. A study published via Springer found that students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) tend to perform better when learning involves visual stimuli, and that digital storytelling provides a highly customisable environment that can engage their interest in ways that traditional instruction cannot. The ability to combine images, recorded voice, and text means students are not forced to rely on any single mode of communication that may be difficult for them.
For students with intellectual disabilities, research in educational digital storytelling shows that the format can help them express emotions, identify challenges, and build self-awareness – outcomes that go well beyond academic content. Researchers have also integrated digital storytelling with communication support systems like the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) for students with severe movement and cognitive impairments, demonstrating success even with learners who face significant barriers to traditional participation.
From a broader classroom perspective, digital storytelling also promotes collaboration and peer engagement. Studies on digital storytelling in inclusive education highlight that it encourages positive attitudes toward group work and strengthens narrative skills in children with special needs. The process of planning, creating, and sharing a digital story becomes a structured, purposeful activity that every student can take part in – at their own pace and in their own way.
VoiceThread and digital posters: participating on your own terms
Classroom discussions and presentations are a core part of learning. But for students with speech impairments, motor disabilities, hearing loss, or severe anxiety, raising a hand or standing at the front of the class can be genuinely inaccessible. VoiceThread and digital posters offer structured alternatives that maintain the educational purpose of discussion and presentation while removing the specific barriers those formats create.
What VoiceThread offers
VoiceThread is a multimedia platform that allows users to upload images, documents, and videos, and then layer voice comments, text comments, or video responses over those slides. Students can contribute to discussions asynchronously – meaning they do not have to respond in real time, in front of the class, or using spoken language if that is not accessible to them.
Special education teacher Lauren Andersen, writing on the VoiceThread blog, describes how the platform enables students to respond by recording videos, recording a voice message, or typing text – whatever works best for them individually. She notes that this multi-sensory flexibility is simply not available in most classroom tools today, but is essential for students with severe and multiple disabilities. In her own practice, she has used VoiceThread to create read-alouds, multi-step activity presentations, and guided lesson sequences that her students can access at their own pace, from any device.
For students with speech or motor impairments, the ability to type a comment rather than speak it out loud is not a lesser form of participation – it is full participation. For students with hearing impairments, VoiceThread’s support for text-based commenting and closed captioning on video content ensures they are not excluded from multimedia discussions. Accessibility guidance from the University of Colorado recommends that educators use VoiceThread’s Universal mode for screen reader users and add closed captions to video content to support students with visual and hearing impairments respectively.
Digital posters as an inclusive presentation format
Digital posters – created using tools such as Canva, Glogster, or Google Slides – give students another way to present their understanding without the pressure of a live spoken presentation. A student can take time to arrange visuals, record audio captions, embed videos, and structure their ideas thoughtfully. The finished product is a shareable, interactive presentation that can be experienced by classmates individually rather than as a single live event.
This format is particularly beneficial for students with anxiety disorders, those on the autism spectrum, or students with speech and language difficulties. It shifts the emphasis from performance to content – what the student knows and thinks – rather than how fluently they can speak in front of an audience. Research on inclusive education consistently shows that when students with disabilities are given appropriate accommodations and alternative formats, their academic engagement, self-confidence, and social participation all improve significantly.
Together, VoiceThread and digital posters also promote peer learning. When one student’s digital poster or VoiceThread comment is visible or audible to the whole class, every student’s contribution becomes part of the shared learning experience – which is, after all, the point of a classroom discussion.
The bigger picture: ICT as a tool for genuine inclusion
It is worth stepping back to consider what these three tools have in common. They do not simplify content for students with disabilities. They do not separate those students from their peers or ask them to follow a parallel curriculum. Instead, they change the format through which content is accessed, processed, and expressed – and that shift makes all the difference.
The World Bank’s Inclusive Education Initiative frames this clearly: the journey toward inclusive education through ICT encompasses a spectrum of possibilities, from simple accessible tools to more sophisticated assistive technologies. The key principle is that decisions about technology must be guided by learner needs – not by what is convenient or already available. When that principle is followed, UNESCO research shows that technology meaningfully increases students’ self-confidence and independence, improves academic engagement, and supports their social participation in the classroom community.
None of this removes the need for thoughtful teaching. Digital tools are only as effective as the educators who deploy them with purpose and skill. But for teachers committed to genuinely inclusive classrooms, tools like accessible digital textbooks, digital storytelling platforms, VoiceThread, and digital posters offer practical, evidence-backed ways to ensure that every student – regardless of their disability – has a real opportunity to learn, contribute, and be heard.
