What are online and e-examinations?
An online examination is a digitally administered test in which students respond to questions through a computer, tablet, or other internet-enabled device, rather than on paper. The term e-examination (or electronic examination) is often used interchangeably, though it can also refer to assessments that are conducted digitally but within a controlled, on-campus environment. Electronic assessment covers both formative assessments (used to support ongoing learning) and high-stakes summative examinations, and is now widely adopted by schools, universities, and professional certification bodies across the world.
These systems are typically delivered through a Learning Management System (LMS) – platforms like Moodle, Canvas, or Blackboard – or through dedicated examination software. The exam content, student responses, timing, and results are all managed within the same digital ecosystem.
How an online examination works: step by step
The process of conducting an online examination is more structured than it might appear. Each stage is carefully designed to ensure fairness, security, and a smooth experience for both students and examiners.
Setting up the exam

It prevents students from exiting the browser window, using other applications, copy-pasting content, or opening additional screens. This means students cannot quickly search for answers online during the exam. Lockdown browsers are most effective when used alongside proctoring tools and randomised question banks, creating multiple overlapping layers of security.
