Assessment is often thought of as something that happens after learning – a test at the end of a unit, a grade on a report card. But this view misses something critical: when used well, assessment is not a measure of learning that has already happened. It is a driver of learning that is still in progress. Research in educational practice consistently shows that assessment embedded within the teaching and learning process – not just placed at the end of it – leads to measurably better outcomes for students. Understanding how to use assessment as a tool for enhancing learning is therefore one of the most important competencies a teacher can develop.

Assessment as a tool for learning, not just measurement

There is a fundamental distinction between assessing of learning and assessing for learning. The first checks what students have retained at the end of an instructional period. The second is woven into the instructional process itself, continuously informing both teaching and learning. Formative assessment techniques, through their continuous and interactive nature, allow for enhanced learning by providing immediate feedback and personalized instruction, promoting active student engagement, and guiding targeted interventions.

This shift in perspective – from assessment as a verdict to assessment as a guide – is central to effective classroom practice. Assessing student learning not only helps educators make informed decisions about instruction but also contributes to student success and fosters a culture of continuous improvement. When teachers treat assessment as an ongoing conversation rather than a final judgment, classrooms become more responsive, more adaptive, and ultimately more effective.

Monitoring learning: before, during, and after instruction

One of the core functions of assessment in the classroom is monitoring – tracking where students are in their learning journey at any given point. This is not a one-time event. Effective monitoring happens across the entire arc of instruction.

Assessment can be undertaken before, during, and after instruction. Before teaching begins, it can help identify what students already know and can do, establishing a baseline and giving teachers a starting point for planning. During instruction, it provides real-time information about whether students are following along or struggling. After instruction, it reveals whether learning objectives have been met and what may need revisiting.

This continuous approach to monitoring transforms how teachers plan and respond. Rather than waiting until the end of a unit to discover that students have misunderstood a key concept, teachers can catch these gaps early and adjust their approach accordingly. Formative assessment strategies provide ongoing monitoring of student understanding throughout the learning process, allowing teachers to identify gaps and adjust instruction before summative evaluations.

Identifying learning difficulties through assessment

A crucial function of assessment in the classroom is identifying when and where students are struggling. Difficulties in learning are not always visible without deliberate effort to uncover them. A student who is quiet in class may be confused, not disengaged. Another may appear to be following along but has a persistent misconception that goes unaddressed for weeks.

Without formative feedback, students may not be aware of their own misunderstandings. This can later lead to confusion and cause students to lose motivation. Regular, low-stakes assessment activities – such as exit tickets, classroom discussions, quick writes, or observation checklists – create multiple opportunities for teachers to detect these difficulties early.

By gathering information on students in a continuous way and identifying those experiencing difficulty or those ready for further challenges, teachers can adjust their teaching to better meet the needs of everyone in the class. This is not about labelling students as struggling; it is about giving every student the support they need before a difficulty becomes a barrier.

The principles of effective formative assessment

Not all assessment that happens during a lesson qualifies as effective formative assessment. For assessment to genuinely enhance learning, it needs to follow certain principles. Three key principles are particularly important: integrating assessment into the process of teaching and learning, using assessment evidence to advance learning, and using assessment to support student self-regulation.

Integration into the teaching process

The most effective formative assessments don’t stand out as separate “quizzes” or rigid checkpoints. Instead, they feel like natural extensions of teaching – woven into discussions, hands-on activities, quick writes, or reflective prompts. When assessment is embedded in the lesson itself, it does not disrupt the flow of learning; it becomes part of it.

This integration also means that assessment is planned alongside instruction, not added on at the end. Teachers who design lessons with formative checkpoints built in are better equipped to notice when something is not working and make adjustments on the spot.

Using evidence to inform next steps

Collecting information about student learning is only useful if that information is acted upon. Effective formative assessment practice involves teachers and students in understanding where students currently are in their learning, while they are still in the process of learning, and in making decisions about how to move that learning forward.

This means that when a teacher reviews students’ written responses and notices a common error, the next lesson should address that error directly. When observations reveal that most of the class has grasped a concept but a small group has not, instruction can be differentiated to support those students while others are extended. Assessment evidence should drive instructional decisions – always.

Supporting student self-regulation

The most powerful assessment is not one-directional. Formative assessment should occur in a non-threatening environment, be offered at a time applicable to the students’ learning journey, and be one where the student takes an active part in the process. When students are involved in their own assessment – when they understand the learning goals, can identify where they are relative to those goals, and know what steps to take next – they become more self-directed and motivated learners.

Feedback: the engine of learning improvement

Of all the components of effective assessment practice, feedback is arguably the most powerful. Research shows firm evidence that innovations designed to strengthen the frequent feedback that students receive about their learning yield substantial learning gains.

Effective feedback is specific, timely, and actionable. It tells students not just whether they were right or wrong, but why, and it points clearly to what they should do differently. Formative feedback helps students recognize gaps in their knowledge, areas to improve, what support resources they may need, and learning strategies they might change or adapt to meet course outcomes.

Critically, feedback is not a one-way process. John Hattie believes that the most powerful feedback is given from the learner to the teacher, as it allows teachers to see learning through the eyes of their students. Classroom assessment processes that invite students to share their thinking – through discussion, written responses, or questioning – give teachers invaluable insight into how learning is actually progressing.

It is also worth noting that feedback can be harmful when it is not purposefully designed. Feedback can harm learning when it doesn’t lead to improved student performance or when it’s not purposefully designed. Teachers can avoid this by ensuring feedback is practical and focuses on helping students achieve future goals they cannot currently reach, rather than just commenting on completed work without clear guidance for improvement.

Self-assessment and peer assessment as learning tools

Assessment does not have to be the sole responsibility of the teacher. When students assess their own work or evaluate the work of their peers, assessment becomes a richer, more collaborative process.

Self-assessment

Self-assessment enables students to take ownership of their learning by judging the extent of their knowledge and understanding. It provides a structure for them to reflect on their work, what they have learned, and how to improve. When students regularly examine their own thinking, they develop metacognitive awareness – the ability to monitor their own understanding and adjust their approach when they are not making progress.

Self-assessment can be utilized at all stages of the learning process. Before a lesson, it helps the student activate prior knowledge. During a lesson, it helps students review what they understand and what they hope to understand by the end of the lesson. Used consistently, self-assessment cultivates independent learners who do not wait to be told how they are doing – they know.

Peer assessment

Peer feedback exposes students to standards and viewpoints they might not consider independently. While teacher feedback represents an expert perspective, peer feedback shows how fellow learners interpret and respond to their work. Through structured peer review, students encounter diverse approaches and develop better judgment about quality.

Self-assessment and peer assessment can produce feedback to oneself or others that informs adjustments to learning strategies and enhances performance. For these approaches to work well, students need clear criteria, guided practice, and a classroom culture where honest, constructive feedback is valued and expected.

Assessment as an integral part of the teaching and learning cycle

Perhaps the most important principle underlying all of the above is that assessment must be treated as an integral part of the teaching and learning cycle – not an interruption to it, and certainly not an afterthought.

Assessment, along with planning, programming, implementing, and evaluating, forms the foundation of the teaching and learning cycle – a process which considers the learning needs of students as individuals and creates a learning environment where students are supported to achieve learning outcomes. A predominant feature of the learning cycle, assessment should be used regularly and on an ongoing basis to track student progress and identify difficulties students may be experiencing in their learning.

Assessment is an ongoing cycle that helps us monitor our teaching and continually improve. It involves identifying what we want students to learn, providing learning opportunities, evaluating whether they have learned what we intend, and making adjustments to help current and future students learn better. Each pass through this cycle generates information that makes the next pass more effective.

When teachers internalize this view – when assessment is seen not as something done to students but as something done with them and for them – classrooms transform. Students become partners in their own development. Teaching becomes more precise. Learning becomes more intentional. And the gap between where students are and where they need to be begins to close.
