Educational videos have become a cornerstone of modern learning – used in flipped classrooms, online courses, and blended learning environments alike. But creating a video is only half the job. The other half, and arguably the more important one, is figuring out whether the video actually works. Does it help learners understand the material? Does it hold their attention? Does it lead to measurable learning outcomes? That’s where evaluation comes in. Without a structured evaluation process, you’re essentially guessing whether your educational video is effective. This post breaks down why evaluation matters, the types of evaluation you should use, how to gather meaningful feedback from learners, and how to turn all of that data into actionable improvements.

Types of evaluation: formative and summative

Evaluation of educational videos generally falls into two categories: formative evaluation and summative evaluation. Each serves a distinct purpose, and using both together gives you the most complete picture of your video’s effectiveness.

Formative evaluation

Formative evaluation takes place during the development of the video, before it reaches a wide audience. The goal is to catch problems early and make improvements in real time.
