Education has always been about more than textbooks and exams. At its deepest level, it is about freedom – the freedom to think independently, question assumptions, navigate the world with confidence, and shape one’s own destiny. This idea, known as education as liberation, positions learning not as a passive exercise in receiving information, but as a dynamic process of becoming more fully human. In a world increasingly shaped by technology, information overload, and rapid social change, understanding education through this lens has never been more relevant.

The roots of education as liberation

The concept of education as liberation has deep philosophical roots, but no one articulated it more powerfully than Brazilian educator Paulo Freire (1921-1997). Growing up in the impoverished northeast of Brazil, Freire experienced firsthand how lack of education kept ordinary people trapped in cycles of poverty and dependency. This shaped his lifelong commitment to education as a tool for human emancipation.

Freire is best known for Pedagogy of the Oppressed, in which he reimagined teaching as a collaborative act of liberation rather than a mere transmission of facts. He became one of the most influential educational theorists of the twentieth century and is widely regarded as a founder of critical pedagogy – the idea that education must engage learners as active, thinking participants, not passive recipients.

Freire’s core argument was stark: education either functions as an instrument to bring about conformity, or it becomes the “practice of freedom,” the means by which people deal critically with reality and discover how to transform their world. There is, he insisted, no neutral ground.

The “banking” model: education as control

To understand what liberatory education looks like, it helps to first understand what it is not. Freire called the traditional approach the “banking” model of education. In this model, the student is treated as an empty vessel to be filled with knowledge, like a piggy bank – passively receiving deposits from the teacher without questioning, analyzing, or engaging with the material.

In the banking model, the scope of action allowed to students extends only as far as receiving, filing, and storing information. There is no room for creativity, transformation, or genuine inquiry. People educated this way, Freire warned, remain intellectually dependent – conditioned to accept the world as it is rather than to question it or work to change it.

This form of education, Freire argued, is not benign. It serves the interests of those who benefit from keeping others in a state of intellectual passivity. When people cannot think critically, they are far easier to control – by governments, corporations, ideologies, or any authority that prefers compliance over conscious engagement.

Problem-posing education: the liberatory alternative

In contrast, Freire proposed problem-posing education – a model in which teachers and students engage together as co-learners, examining real-world problems, questioning social realities, and building knowledge through dialogue. Problem-posing education relies upon dialogue and critical consciousness, democratic teacher-student relationships, the co-creation of knowledge through interaction, and a curriculum grounded in students’ interests and experiences.

Central to this approach is the concept of conscientizaรงรฃo (critical consciousness) – the ability to perceive, analyze, and act upon the social, political, and economic forces that shape one’s life. Conscientization may be defined as the critical awareness of reality and the capacity to transform it. When learners develop this awareness, they stop seeing their circumstances as fixed and inevitable, and begin to recognize them as changeable through informed action.

Freire developed an approach to education that links the identification of issues to positive action for change and development, showing us how to “read” the society around us with a critical eye. This is the essence of liberatory education: not just learning to read words, but learning to read the world.

Liberation from dependency: what it means in practice

When we speak of education freeing individuals from dependency and control, we are talking about something very concrete. Dependency in education takes many forms – depending on authority figures to tell you what to think, relying on a single source for information, or accepting social narratives without scrutiny. Liberatory education disrupts all of these.

The digital age has transformed how learners access information, allowing them to take greater control of their learning. Online resources, educational platforms, and open-access materials provide learners with opportunities to learn at their own pace, explore a wide range of topics, and take ownership of their learning journeys. But technology alone does not guarantee liberation – it must be paired with the critical thinking skills to evaluate and use information responsibly.

Research consistently shows that a clear shift can occur from dependent to independent learners when students are granted autonomy and engaged in collaborative, meaningful tasks. When learners are trusted with choices about their education, they develop not only knowledge but also confidence, responsibility, and self-awareness – the building blocks of genuine autonomy.

Autonomy as a lifelong practice

Liberatory education does not end with graduation. As the demand for continuous learning and adaptability in the workforce grows, learner autonomy has gained significance in the context of lifelong learning. In today’s global economy, individuals must be able to learn independently and adapt to new challenges. Skills like problem-solving, self-regulation, and independent inquiry – all products of a liberatory education – are what allow people to navigate a constantly shifting world.

The World Economic Forum projects that learners in this generation will change careers five to seven times, and that over 60% of the jobs they will have don’t even exist yet. In this context, an education that simply fills students with pre-packaged knowledge leaves them dangerously unprepared. What they need instead is the capacity to learn, unlearn, and relearn – which is precisely what education as liberation builds.

Education, technology, and the challenge of remaining free

Technology presents one of the most significant arenas in which the liberatory purpose of education is tested today. Digital competencies and information literacy are increasingly becoming a key component of foundational learning – without which individuals cannot participate effectively in modern society. This makes digital education not merely a convenience but a matter of equity and freedom.

However, UNESCO’s Global Education Monitoring Report found that only 40% of primary schools are connected to the internet, revealing the extent of the digital divide. This gap is not just a technical problem – it is an educational justice problem. Those without access to quality digital learning are effectively excluded from full participation in economic, civic, and social life.

At the same time, access to technology without critical education can itself become a new form of dependency. Algorithms decide what people see. Misinformation spreads rapidly. Internet access has expanded the flow of diverse information and opportunities for effecting positive societal change, but it has also accelerated the spread of misinformation, disinformation, hate speech, and online violence. The ability to navigate this landscape requires exactly the kind of critical, evaluative thinking that liberatory education fosters.

UNESCO prioritizes human agency, critical thinking, and ethics among students and teachers in an age of generative AI – recognizing that as technology grows more powerful, the human capacity for independent thought becomes more, not less, essential.

The teacher’s role in liberatory education

If learners are to be liberated through education, the role of the teacher must also transform. Freire was explicit about this: teachers must reposition themselves as facilitators rather than authorities, helping learners perceive the structures and powers that shape their lives. This does not diminish the teacher’s importance – it redefines it.

A liberatory teacher does not merely deliver content. They design experiences that provoke thinking, welcome questioning, and treat students as capable of generating knowledge. Freire refined his notion of the teacher-student relationship, explaining that dialogue between teachers and students marks a democratic position between them – one of mutual respect, not hierarchy.

This shift is supported by evidence. By exercising autonomy and setting their own goals, educators can model the importance of ongoing development for their students, creating a learning culture that values persistence, growth, and adaptability. When teachers themselves embody the spirit of inquiry and lifelong learning, their classrooms become spaces of genuine intellectual freedom.

Education and the fulfillment of human potential

Ultimately, education as liberation is grounded in a belief about what it means to be human. Freire argued that becoming more fully human – developing one’s capacities, exercising one’s voice, engaging meaningfully with society – is every person’s fundamental calling. Education, when it truly liberates, serves this calling.

This does not mean education is only for social activists or the politically engaged. It means that every learner – whether studying science, literature, technology, or the arts – deserves an education that builds their capacity to think independently, engage critically, and live with intention. Freire showed us how to connect real-world problems to creating positive change, and how to read the society around us with a critical eye.

Education that liberates produces individuals who are not dependent on being told what to think or what to do. They are capable of forming judgments, evaluating evidence, and making choices that reflect their own understanding and values. They can engage with technology without being consumed by it, navigate complex social environments without losing their sense of self, and face an uncertain future without being paralyzed by it.
