Is education a standalone discipline with its own distinct body of knowledge, or is it simply a collection of insights borrowed from other fields? This question has occupied scholars, educators, and policymakers for decades – and the answer is more nuanced than a simple yes or no. Education, in its truest sense, occupies a unique intellectual space: it draws on psychology, sociology, history, and philosophy to address the complex realities of teaching and learning, while simultaneously building its own theoretical frameworks and practical traditions. Understanding education’s status as a discipline is not just an academic exercise – it directly shapes how teachers are trained, how curricula are designed, and how schools respond to the diverse needs of learners.

What does it mean to be a multidisciplinary field?

A multidisciplinary field is one that integrates theories, research methods, and insights from multiple established disciplines to tackle problems that no single field can adequately address on its own. Interdisciplinarity cuts across the traditional boundaries of academic study, combining different ways of knowing to generate a more complete understanding of complex phenomena. Education fits this description closely. Real educational problems – Why do students disengage in classrooms? How does poverty affect learning? What values should a school system uphold? – cannot be answered through one lens alone. They demand perspectives from multiple disciplines working in concert.

Educational research has been characterized by a pluralism of theories and methodologies drawn from psychology, sociology, philosophy, history, and economics. This breadth is not a weakness – it is what gives education the flexibility to respond to the full complexity of human development and social life.

The disciplines that shape education

Education does not draw equally from all fields. Certain disciplines have made foundational contributions that are now central to educational theory and practice.

Psychology: understanding how learners think and grow

Psychology is arguably the most direct contributor to educational knowledge. Education combines aspects of psychology, history, philosophy, sociology and some practical studies to address questions of curriculum, teaching methods, and values. Cognitive psychology helps educators understand how the brain processes and retains information, informing the design of effective learning strategies. Developmental psychology allows teachers to tailor their approaches to the different stages of cognitive and emotional growth that students move through. Without psychological insights, education would have little to say about how learning actually happens at the level of the individual learner.

Sociology: situating education in society

No classroom exists in isolation from the broader society around it. Sociology explores social structures, institutions, and processes, providing education with a framework for understanding how social factors – poverty, caste, race, gender, and family background – shape learners’ experiences and outcomes. Sociological perspectives also illuminate issues of inequality in education, the influence of peer groups on learning behavior, and the role of educational institutions in either reinforcing or challenging existing social norms. The Kothari Commission (1964-66) in India explicitly emphasized an interdisciplinary approach, recognizing that educational planning could not be divorced from the social realities in which schools operate.

History: learning from the past to understand the present

History provides education with a sense of its own development and continuity. By studying how educational systems have evolved – from the ancient gurukul tradition in India to colonial schooling models and post-independence reforms – educators gain a critical perspective on why present-day practices look the way they do. India has a long tradition of holistic and multidisciplinary learning, evident in ancient centres of learning like Takshashila and Nalanda, where knowledge across sciences, arts, and vocational fields was taught as an integrated whole. Historical awareness also enables educators to trace the roots of persistent inequalities and question structures that may have outlived their original purpose.

Philosophy: asking the hard questions

Philosophy provides education with its moral and intellectual direction. The philosophy of education is an interdisciplinary field that draws on ethics, political philosophy, psychology, and sociology to examine the nature, aims, and problems of education. It asks foundational questions: What is knowledge, and how is it best transmitted? What should education ultimately achieve? What is the role of the teacher in society? Thinkers like John Dewey, who championed experiential and democratic learning, and classical philosophers like Socrates and Plato, who stressed intellectual rigor and critical inquiry, have left permanent marks on educational theory. Without philosophy, education risks becoming technically efficient but morally directionless.

Education as an applied discipline

One of the defining features of education is that it is inherently practical. Knowledge about learning is only valuable when it translates into actual teaching. In this sense, education functions as an applied discipline – one that puts theory to work in real classrooms, with real students facing real challenges. Applied fields tend to be concerned with the application of knowledge, and education clearly belongs in this category alongside law and engineering. A teacher drawing on developmental psychology to respond to a struggling student, or a school counselor using sociological frameworks to understand a family’s situation, is enacting this applied character of education in practice.

The applied dimension is also visible in how teacher training works. Education is concerned with understanding and developing human deliberative practice for public good – a practical orientation that distinguishes it from purely theoretic disciplines like mathematics or physics, which aim to generate knowledge for its own sake. Training and field experience are, therefore, not supplementary to education as a discipline – they are central to it.

Education as a theoretical discipline

Yet reducing education to mere practice misses something important. Over time, education has accumulated its own distinct body of knowledge, theoretical frameworks, and research traditions. Education has a particular object of research, a body of accumulated specialist knowledge, theories that organise that knowledge, specific terminologies, and specific research methods – all criteria that qualify it as a genuine academic discipline in its own right.

Theoretical frameworks like constructivism, developed by Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky, propose that learners actively construct knowledge rather than passively receive it. Critical pedagogy, associated with Paulo Freire, examines the relationship between education and power. These are not simply borrowed concepts from psychology or philosophy – they have been refined, tested, and developed within the specific context of educational research. As the criteria for a discipline include a body of knowledge, specific vocabulary, and recognised methods of inquiry, education meets this standard – even if its theoretical frameworks are less unified than those of, say, physics or chemistry.

The interplay between theory and practice is, in fact, one of education’s great strengths. As one academic perspective on university education puts it, the theoretical and the practical need each other, and the world needs both. In education, theory without practice becomes detached from reality; practice without theory becomes unreflective habit.

Why multidisciplinary education matters for learners

The multidisciplinary nature of education as a discipline has direct consequences for what students experience in classrooms. A multidisciplinary approach better equips students to understand, analyse, and address the complexities of the world around them, preparing them to become well-rounded individuals and effective contributors to society. When students engage with knowledge from multiple domains, they develop stronger critical thinking, more flexible problem-solving skills, and a broader appreciation for how different fields of knowledge connect.

India’s National Education Policy 2020 reflects precisely this understanding. It envisions a multidisciplinary education that aims to develop the social, physical, intellectual, emotional, and moral capacities of learners in an integrated manner – moving decisively away from rigid subject-based silos. The policy draws explicitly on India’s ancient educational traditions, where knowledge was understood as inherently interconnected, not departmentalized. The aim of education, under NEP 2020, is not only cognitive development, but also building character and creating holistic and well-rounded individuals.

Through exposure to various fields of study, students can develop not only a deep understanding of their chosen field but also an appreciation for other knowledge systems, enabling them to navigate the challenges of an interconnected world with greater adaptability and insight.

Resolving the tension: education as both applied and theoretical

The debate between viewing education as an applied discipline versus a theoretical one is ultimately a false dichotomy. Education’s strength lies precisely in holding both orientations together. In the UK, education is primarily seen not as a singular discipline but rather as an applied field that draws on the foundation disciplines – philosophy, sociology, psychology, and history. Yet this does not diminish its status; it reflects how education functions at the intersection of knowledge and action.

What makes education distinctive is that borrowed concepts from other disciplines do not simply remain unchanged within educational contexts – they are transformed. Ideas from psychology, for instance, are reinterpreted through the lens of classroom realities, institutional constraints, and ethical commitments. Education has its own set of problems, questions, knowledge bases, and approaches to inquiry – and that which is borrowed from other disciplines often becomes transformed within its study. This process of transformation is what constitutes education’s unique disciplinary identity.

People who enter education from backgrounds in psychology, sociology, philosophy, or history often find that the field of education becomes their primary intellectual home – not because it replaces those disciplines, but because it synthesizes and transcends them in pursuit of a larger human purpose.
