Epistemology – the study of how we come to know what we know – is one of the oldest and most fundamental questions in philosophy. Yet for educators and learners, it is far from abstract. Every time a student revises a prior belief, a teacher reframes a concept, or a classroom discussion shifts someone’s perspective, the process of knowing is actively at work. Knowledge creation is not a simple download of facts from teacher to student; it is a dynamic, layered, and deeply contextual process that unfolds through continuous interaction between the individual and the world around them. Understanding that process is at the heart of meaningful teaching and learning.

What does it mean to “know” something?

At the most foundational level, epistemologists define knowledge as justified true belief – a claim must be true, must be believed, and must be supported by evidence or reasoning. But this clean definition quickly becomes complicated. Knowledge is not just about facts we can state; it also includes knowing how to do things (procedural knowledge) and knowing by acquaintance – the familiarity that comes from direct experience. These different types of knowledge cannot be neatly separated, and each plays a distinct role in how we learn and teach.

More importantly, knowledge is never entirely neutral or context-free. As the Wikipedia overview of epistemology notes, social epistemology – a growing branch of the field – investigates how knowledge arises from communal interaction, not just individual reasoning. This is highly relevant to education, where knowledge almost always emerges in a social context: classrooms, discussions, collaborative tasks, and cultural traditions all shape what is known and how it is understood.

The epistemic triangle: a model for knowledge creation

One powerful framework for understanding how knowledge is created is the epistemic triangle. This model, rooted in constructivist and systemic educational theory, identifies three interdependent elements in the process of knowing: the knower (the individual engaging with the world), the known (the object, concept, or experience being understood), and the context (the environment, culture, and framework in which knowing takes place). These three elements are not independent – they constantly influence each other.

As H.S. Bhola argued in his seminal work, systems thinking must be combined with dialectical and constructivist thinking for effective educational design and change. The epistemic triangle embodies exactly this integration. It frames knowledge creation as a dialectical process – meaning knowledge does not flow in one direction from world to mind, but is produced through a back-and-forth interaction. The knower shapes how the known is understood, and that understanding in turn reshapes the knower.

A concrete example makes this clear: consider the concept of “family.” A child growing up in a nuclear household, a student from a joint family system, and a researcher studying kinship patterns across cultures will each construct a different understanding of “family” – not because one is correct and others wrong, but because context, experience, and prior knowledge all contribute to the meaning made. The known object (family) is the same; the knowing is different because the knower and context differ.

The spiral nature of knowledge creation

A key insight from the epistemological study of knowing is that knowledge does not accumulate in a straight line. It evolves in a spiral – returning to earlier ideas but from deeper, more informed vantage points. This spiral character of knowing was most influentially articulated by Ikujiro Nonaka and Hirotaka Takeuchi in their landmark work on organizational knowledge. According to their SECI model of knowledge creation, knowledge generation is a systemic, dynamic, and ongoing process that emerges and recurs over time – not a linear accumulation, but a continuous expansion through cycles of interaction.

Nonaka and Takeuchi identified two fundamental forms of knowledge: tacit knowledge (personal, experiential, hard to articulate – such as the feel of riding a bicycle) and explicit knowledge (formal, codified, shareable – such as a written procedure). In their model, knowledge spirals forward through four conversion processes: Socialization (sharing tacit knowledge through shared experience), Externalization (converting tacit knowledge into explicit form), Combination (integrating different pieces of explicit knowledge), and Internalization (absorbing explicit knowledge back into personal, tacit understanding). Each cycle through these four stages does not just repeat – it expands and deepens the knowledge at each turn.

For educators, this spiral model has direct implications. When students revisit a topic they studied earlier – say, photosynthesis in primary school and again in secondary school – they are not simply reviewing old material. They are re-entering the spiral at a higher level, integrating more complex concepts with previously internalized understanding. The spiral of knowing is also visible in how teachers develop expertise: through cycles of teaching, reflecting, reading theory, adjusting practice, and teaching again.

Embracing opposing concepts in the spiral

The spiral model of knowing also has the capacity to hold seemingly opposing ideas in productive tension. Knowledge creation is not always a smooth progression from confusion to clarity; it regularly involves navigating contradictions – between order and chaos, micro and macro perspectives, individual experience and collective understanding, stability and change. As dialectical approaches to knowledge creation suggest, these tensions are not problems to be eliminated but engines that drive deeper understanding.

This insight connects to classical philosophy as well. Dialectical approaches to knowledge have long recognised that variability and stability, both in the world and in our understanding of it, form a real and generative contradiction. Absolutising either stability (leading to rigid, dogmatic thinking) or variability (leading to relativism, where nothing can be reliably known) misses the truth that knowledge lives in the dynamic interplay between them. The experienced teacher knows this well: good pedagogy holds structure and flexibility together, rather than surrendering entirely to either.

Philosophical perspectives on knowing: realism and idealism

Two major philosophical traditions offer contrasting accounts of how the process of knowing works: realism and idealism. Understanding both is essential for educators who want to think clearly about what they are doing when they teach.

Realism: knowledge as discovery

Realism holds that the world exists independently of our minds and that knowledge consists in accurately perceiving and representing that external reality. From a realist perspective, the task of the knower is essentially one of discovery: uncovering truths that are already there, waiting to be found. Direct realists argue that we can perceive external objects directly, while indirect realists hold that our knowledge is mediated by mental representations. In education, a broadly realist outlook underpins approaches that emphasise factual accuracy, evidence-based learning, and the idea that there are correct answers students should arrive at.

Idealism: knowledge as construction

Idealism, by contrast, holds that knowledge is not simply a mirror of the external world but is shaped – actively constructed – by the mind. The most influential figure here is Immanuel Kant, whose transcendental idealism argued that the mind organises raw sensory experience through built-in categories of understanding. We do not perceive things purely as they are in themselves; we perceive things as structured by the frameworks we bring to experience. For educators, this tradition is the philosophical backbone of constructivist teaching – the idea that learners actively build meaning rather than passively receive it.

Neither realism nor idealism fully captures the complexity of how knowing works in practice. Most contemporary epistemologists and educators work in territory that draws on both: acknowledging that there is a real world that constrains what we can know, while also recognising that our frameworks, cultures, and experiences fundamentally shape how we know it.

The contextual nature of knowledge

A third, equally important dimension of the process of knowing is its contextuality. Knowledge is not universal and abstract but is embedded in specific historical, cultural, social, and situational frameworks. As philosophers and sociologists have long recognised, knowledge is deeply tied to human cognition, experience, and context – it cannot be fully separated from the conditions in which it arises and is used.

In educational practice, this means that the same content can be understood very differently depending on who is learning it, in what setting, with what prior experiences, and under what cultural assumptions. A concept like “democracy,” for example, carries different resonances and meanings for students in different political and historical contexts. Recognising this does not mean abandoning the idea of truth – it means being attentive to the fact that understanding is always situated. As interpretivist researchers have shown, knowledge is often co-created through the interaction between learner, teacher, and context – it is intersubjective, shaped by the perspectives that all parties bring to the encounter.

This contextual understanding of knowledge has important implications for curriculum design and classroom practice. It calls educators to move beyond treating knowledge as a fixed body of content to be transmitted and toward creating conditions in which students can engage in genuine inquiry – bringing their own contexts to bear, encountering different perspectives, and developing reflective, situated understanding.

Reflection: the bridge between experience and understanding

Across all these frameworks – the epistemic triangle, the spiral model, realism, idealism, and contextual knowing – one element consistently appears as central: reflection. Knowing is not simply a matter of having experiences; it is a matter of thinking carefully about those experiences, testing them against other ideas, and integrating them into a broader understanding. This reflective dimension of knowing is what distinguishes deeper learning from surface familiarity.

Paulo Freire’s epistemology made this point forcefully: critical reflection on the world – combined with action to engage and change it – is what constitutes genuine knowing. Mere passive reception of information, however accurate, is not enough. It is in the active, reflective engagement with ideas, experiences, and other perspectives that knowledge truly comes to life. For teachers, this means that designing for reflection is not an optional add-on to good teaching – it is inseparable from the process of knowing itself.
