Types of assessments: formative vs. summative
Understanding the two main types of assessment – formative and summative – is essential to building an effective monitoring system. Both serve different purposes, and schools that use them together see the strongest results.
Formative assessment: checking understanding during learning
Formative assessment happens while learning is still in progress. Its purpose is to gather real-time information about student understanding so that teachers can adjust instruction immediately. According to Yale University’s Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning, formative assessments aim to identify strengths, challenges, and misconceptions and then evaluate how to close those gaps.

The study also found that self-monitoring was a significant factor in these outcomes, particularly for girls.
How teachers can encourage self-monitoring
Provide clear criteria and rubrics. Students can’t assess their own work effectively if they don’t know what “good” looks like. Sharing rubrics, checklists, and model examples at the start of an assignment gives students a standard against which they can measure their performance.
Teach students to set their own goals.
