Education has long been more than a process of reading, writing, and arithmetic. In India’s context, it has functioned as one of the most powerful levers for reshaping society – dismantling caste barriers, enabling economic mobility, spreading scientific thinking, and adapting to a rapidly globalizing world. Research consistently positions education as the fundamental method of social progress and reform – guiding individuals toward new values while increasing society’s potential for its own transformation. This post explores exactly how that transformation plays out in contemporary India.

What does “education as an instrument of social change” really mean?

Social change refers to significant shifts in the values, norms, behaviors, and structures of a society over time. Education becomes an instrument of that change when it actively shapes how people think, what they value, and what they are capable of doing. As the Adamas University analysis notes, the basic design of education carries within it all the components of a dynamic plan to change society – in its goals, methods, and outcomes.

This is not a passive relationship. Education doesn’t simply reflect society; it actively intervenes in it. It is used as a deliberate instrument to bring about change across every sphere of human life – economic, political, cultural, and scientific. When a first-generation college graduate from a rural household enters a professional career, or when a girl in a remote village learns to read and gains financial independence, education is visibly functioning as an agent of social transformation.

Education and the development of scientific temper

One of education’s most critical contributions to social change in India is cultivating what the Indian Constitution calls “scientific temper” – a disposition toward rational inquiry, evidence-based reasoning, and questioning of superstition. This is not just a philosophical ideal; it is a constitutional duty under Article 51A(h) of the Indian Constitution.

According to NEP 2020, scientific temper is essential because it enables the general public to make rational decisions. The policy concludes that developing this mindset among students is necessary for the nation’s overall development, cutting across caste, creed, and religion. NEP 2020 identifies two pathways for achieving this: organizing dedicated programs, and embedding scientific thinking as an integral part of the school curriculum.

In practical terms, this means moving away from rote memorization toward inquiry-based learning. NEP 2020 strongly recommends that science teachers encourage pupils to think creatively and critically – using labs for physics, chemistry, and biology so that principles are understood through application, not just memorization. This pedagogical shift is central to producing citizens who can participate meaningfully in a knowledge-driven economy.

As scholars have pointed out, scientific temper is a requisite to evolving an “ask why” society that can sustain and reinvigorate Indian democracy. It is not enough for India to produce graduates – it needs graduates who think critically, question assumptions, and contribute to science and technology.

Education as a driver of science and technology advancement

India’s ambitions in science and technology are inextricably linked to its education system. The Kothari Commission’s famous statement – “The destiny of India is now being shaped in her classrooms” – remains as relevant today as when it was written. The Commission observed that in a world based on science and technology, it is education that determines the level of prosperity, welfare, and security of a people.

This connection is visible in institutions like the IITs and IISc, which have produced scientists, engineers, and innovators who have contributed to India’s space program, pharmaceutical industry, and software sector. If the recommendations of NEP 2020 are implemented with proper intent, the policy can make India one of the leading countries in science and technology in the world, with wider opportunities for students across economic backgrounds.

Beyond elite institutions, science education at the secondary level forms the base. Students who understand science conceptually at this stage are more likely to pursue advanced study, fuel innovation, and contribute to the technological transformation India is seeking.

Education and social mobility

Social mobility – the ability of individuals to move between different levels of the social and economic hierarchy – is one of the most concrete ways education drives social change. In India, where caste and class have historically determined life outcomes, education has served as a critical counterforce.

By the late 20th century, increasing numbers of people from lower-caste and disadvantaged backgrounds began accessing higher education in professional fields like medicine, engineering, and law. This was driven partly by affirmative action policies – reservations for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes – which were instrumental in breaking down rigid caste-based structures and enabling individuals from marginalized groups to pursue careers previously unattainable to them.

NEP 2020 explicitly states that “education is a great leveller and is the best tool for achieving economic and social mobility, inclusion, and equity.” Scholars Dreze and Sen further argued that education is widely perceived by members of socially or economically disadvantaged groups as the most promising means of upward mobility for their children.

Education also has an emancipatory role – it promotes social awareness and sharpens self-respect and dignity. Constitutional provisions, scholarships, and reservations for SC/ST students all stem from the recognition that education is the primary vehicle through which marginalized communities can access economic development and improved social standing.

Women’s empowerment through education

One of the most significant dimensions of social mobility driven by education in India is women’s empowerment. Literacy programs aimed at women have consistently been linked to better health outcomes, delayed marriage, greater economic participation, and reduced dependence. When women are educated, the effects ripple outward to families and communities. Education fosters a spirit of inquiry, encouraging individuals to question regressive cultural practices and adopt more progressive norms – this applies especially to practices that have historically constrained women’s participation in public life.

Education and economic empowerment

The relationship between education and economic contribution is direct. Education is the most important factor in achieving rapid economic development and technological progress, and in creating a social order founded on values of freedom, social justice, and equal opportunity. An educated workforce is more productive, more adaptable, and more capable of participating in higher-value economic activities.

However, critics have pointed out a significant gap between educational output and economic relevance. The present education system is producing graduates who are unemployable in many cases, lacking basic communication and problem-solving skills needed even for elementary jobs. The curriculum in many institutions remains outdated, not accounting for the fact that the world has moved on. This is precisely why curriculum reform – updating content regularly to match the changing scenario – is central to education’s role as an effective instrument of social change.

NEP 2020 addresses this by integrating vocational education, coding, and skill development from early stages, recognizing that education must connect directly with economic participation to fulfill its transformative promise.

Embracing global change: smartphones and smart boards in education

Perhaps the most visible sign of education adapting to global change is the transformation of Indian classrooms through technology. Not long ago, chalk and blackboard defined the learning environment across India. Today, that image has shifted substantially.

The use of smartboards, blended learning, AI, and mobile-first content has moved technology from an add-on to a core driver of new learning, teaching, and institutional structures. There are over 700 million smartphone users in India, many of whom are accessing learning platforms via phone. Initiatives like Digital India have brought low-cost data to a level that allows even rural households to stream lectures and access live sessions.

Smartboards: from chalk to touchscreen

The journey from chalkboards to smartboards represents a fundamental shift in how teachers teach and students learn. The traditional chalk-and-talk method left many students passive and disengaged. Smart boards are large touchscreen displays that combine the simplicity of a whiteboard with the power of a computer – enabling teachers to present multimedia content, run interactive exercises, and explain complex subjects in science, mathematics, and geography with far greater clarity.

In cities, schools have been quick to adopt these technologies – with students accessing Wi-Fi, tablets, and digital classrooms. Private schools, in particular, are using smartboards and AI learning tools regularly. In rural India, the picture is more uneven, with electricity and internet access remaining constraints in some areas. Yet NGOs, EdTech companies, and government programs are steadily working to bridge this gap.

Smartphones as learning tools

The smartphone has emerged as a democratizing force in Indian education. Apps like Byju’s, Unacademy, Vedantu, and the government’s own SWAYAM platform allow millions to learn for free or at minimal cost – covering everything from school exam preparation to competitive entrance tests. The Indian online education market is expected to reach $18.94 billion by 2029, driven largely by the uptake of mobile learning.

This shift is significant not just technologically but socially. A student in a small town in Assam now has access to the same lecture from an expert professor that a student in Delhi does. That kind of educational equity – still imperfect, but genuinely growing – is exactly the social change that education is designed to bring about.

Education, social reform, and national integration

India’s history of social reform is deeply intertwined with the history of education. Leaders like Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Swami Dayanand Saraswati, Swami Vivekananda, and Mahatma Gandhi – all highly educated individuals – used their learning to challenge social ills and push for transformation at a conscious, deliberate level. Gandhi’s Basic Education system was specifically designed to fight mass illiteracy while connecting learning with productive work and community life.

Education can also prove very useful in bringing about national integration – fostering unity among people by broadening their vision, helping shed parochial attitudes, and cultivating a sense of shared national purpose. In a country as diverse as India, with hundreds of languages, religions, and regional identities, the school and the college serve as spaces where that diversity is encountered and, ideally, celebrated.

Education has also heightened political awareness among India’s population. An informed and engaged citizenry is essential to the functioning of democracy – and education is the primary vehicle through which civic values, constitutional rights, and democratic participation are transmitted to new generations.

The limits of education as a change agent

It is important to be clear-eyed about what education alone can and cannot accomplish. Education performs only a restricted role in the upward mobility of weaker sections, while at the same time enabling elites to maintain positions of power and authority. Access to quality education remains deeply unequal across caste, class, gender, and geography.

Many schools and colleges do not consider themselves instruments of social change consciously – they often ignore their function of promoting social transformation through their educational programs. Teachers, too, do not always realize their role in promoting social change through both teaching and personal example. Without this awareness, even a well-funded school can become a space that merely reproduces existing hierarchies rather than challenging them.

This is why reforms like NEP 2020 are necessary but not sufficient on their own. Policy must be matched by implementation, teacher training, infrastructure investment, and genuine commitment from institutions to make education an active force for equity rather than a passive mirror of social inequality.
