It signals that a person has completed a defined course of study. But completing a system is not the same as deeply understanding it.

This is perhaps the deepest purpose of education: not to make people educated in a narrow credentialing sense, but to develop in them the capacity to become genuinely knowledgeable – curious, critical, and continuously learning.
Why this distinction matters in practice
Understanding the difference between being educated and being knowledgeable has real consequences – for students, teachers, and professionals alike.
For students, it reframes the purpose of schooling. A degree is valuable, but it is a starting point, not an endpoint.
