Many educators mistakenly equate comprehension with the ability to recall facts from a text. But true comprehension goes much deeper. It involves connecting with a text, constructing meaning from it, applying prior knowledge, and thinking critically about what has been read. For teachers of English, understanding the key principles behind reading comprehension – and their classroom implications – can transform how students engage with language and learning.

Reading comprehension is not a passive act. Research consistently shows that comprehension is an active and ongoing process – even fluent readers can struggle with it if they are not engaging meaningfully with a text. This means that teaching comprehension is not simply about getting students to answer questions correctly at the end of a passage. It is about building habits of thinking that students can apply independently, across any text they encounter.

There is a virtual consensus among reading researchers that background knowledge is essential for reading comprehension. Put simply, the more a student already knows about a topic, the easier it is to read a related text, understand it, and retain its content. This is not just intuitive – it is well-supported by evidence. A major 2007 study found that background knowledge and vocabulary were the strongest predictors of reading comprehension among five key variables, accounting for 66% of the variance in students’ scores.
Background knowledge works because it gives readers a mental framework to attach new information to. When a student already has a schema – a mental model – related to a topic, new details from the text can slot into that framework rather than floating as isolated facts. Research from Harvard Graduate School of Education demonstrates that deliberately building background knowledge in the early grades significantly improves students’ reading comprehension, even on new topics – what researchers describe as “transfer.” Teachers who introduced new material by connecting it to what students already knew produced comprehension gains that lasted well beyond the immediate lesson.

Seven research-supported comprehension strategies stand out in the literature: activating prior knowledge, generating questions, creating mental images, drawing inferences, determining importance, summarizing, and synthesizing information. Collaborative Classroom’s synthesis of the research makes clear that these strategies work best not as standalone drills, but as integrated tools used in service of genuine engagement with meaningful texts. Teaching students how to make inferences, for example, is only effective when they have sufficient background knowledge to fill the gaps the author has left unwritten.
Applying new knowledge: reading as an interactive process
The most lasting reading comprehension happens when students are not just decoding or recalling – they are actively building new understanding by connecting what they read to what they already know, and then applying that combined knowledge in new contexts. Decades of research reviewed in the journal The Reading Teacher confirm that fostering comprehension across a wide range of readers requires a multifaceted approach – one that combines knowledge-building, strategy instruction, motivation, and meaningful text engagement, rather than treating any one of these as the sole solution.
This has a direct implication for how educators design lessons. Students need to read rich texts on topics that build on each other over time, developing both their knowledge base and their reading toolkit simultaneously.
